Dear Students and
Parents,
We have had a great
start to the year.
Yet again we began by
celebrating our very best results with 76% of
our students gaining 5+ A*-C, including
English and Maths, and, for the second year
running, over 90% of students gaining 5 A*-
C. Once again, we smashed our very tough
targets. Excellent results allow students onto
an Advanced Level course, which is why they
are so important. We also had record levels
of A* and A grades with a third of top grades.
However, what is most important is that
students at every level were meeting and
even exceeding their targets.
We look forward to our Graduation
Evening in January where we can welcome
back our ex-Year 11 students and celebrate
their successes.
External Review of the School
For the second year running we have
taken part in a two day review of the school
conducted by an OFSTED inspector with a
team of four other senior school leaders. As
we have not had an OFSTED inspection for
several years now, it is very useful to get an
external perspective on our work as we strive
to get even better. The following comments
are extracts from what was, yet again, a very
positive two days and outstanding report:
'Evidence…show(s) that the vast majorityof students are making outstanding progressin lessons and over time…
The quality of teaching is outstandingoverall… It is rare to see any student notengrossed in their lessons. Well-chosenactivities stimulate students' interest andoften contribute to students' reflection onmoral, ethical or religious issues anddilemmas. Students are exceptionally wellbehaved, courteous and polite. In lessons, they show very positive attitudes to theteacher, their learning and each other. Thismakes a strong contribution to the friendlyand welcoming atmosphere that pervadesthe school. Students enjoy coming to schooland this is reflected in comments such as,'We love school because teachers arefriendly and everyone looks after each other.'
The Quality Assurance Review foundindicators that The Compton School appearsto be firmly within the Outstanding grade asjudged by OFSTED in the school's previous
OFSTED report, September 2006.'The positivity openness, confidence and
good manners of students was commented
upon repeatedly by the visiting inspectors. I
was so proud of our students during the
review, as I continue to be on a daily basis!
The continuing success of our school led
to another highlight this term in that I was
asked to attend a private lunch at the House
of Lords this month. I was one of three
Headteachers nationally, invited by Lord
Knight (ex-Minister of State for Education) to
discuss issues around the supply of high
quality teachers for schools nationally. In
addition, it was very interesting to see inside
the House of Lords!
Outreach Work
As we are a National Teaching School, we
not only have a responsibility to ensure we
continue to be an excellent school but also to
contribute to improvements within our area.
As part of this, I have been leading a London-
wide programme supporting improvements in
satisfactory secondary schools in London,
running conferences and leading a team of
consultant headteachers. Additionally I have
been selected to be one of 45 National
Leaders of Education (NLEs) to be fast
tracked to become an OFSTED inspector. I
am currently training and recently undertook
my first inspection in a school outside
London. I am finding the experience
fascinating and very useful to use back in
school to ensure we are doing all we can to
keep improving.
Goodbye and Welcome
This term, we say goodbye and thank you
to Sarah Hanlon, who is returning to her
home in Ireland, and welcome to Rachel
Bywater who is joining the English
department in her place after Christmas.
Gemma Boyett has been covering Sarah
McBride's maternity leave in English but will
be returning to her home in
Australia - a huge thank you to her for her
support while she has been at the school.
Thank you also to Nina Varnava, one of
our mealtime supervisors who has been with
us for many years but is leaving the school at
the end of term.
In November, we welcomed Wiiliam
Eastment, who joined us in the role of Cover
Supervisor; Norah Issekya and Zeba Ali, who
have joined Curriculum Support; Marcella
Crivellaro, our new Creative Arts Technician
and Anna Bunting-Branch, Art Technician.
Also in November, Rebecca Collins,
Teacher of English, gave birth to a baby girl.
We send her and baby Isabelle many
congratulations.
Finally I would like to wish you and your
families a very Happy Christmas and New
Year.

Message from the School GovernorsDear Parents
It has been another busy term for the Governing Body and I am delighted to welcome three new
governors to the Governing Body, bringing us back to full complement following vacancies arising
since the summer.
The School Expansion Plan and the imminent building project have been key issues of
business for the Governing Body over the last few terms. With the local community consultation
process having been completed, we are now looking forward to the beginning of the building
programme. As the initial expansion gets underway, we shall continue to assess the options for
longer term expansion including a VIth form.
As part of a separate project, we have been in discussions with a third party to refurbish the
sports hall and Astroturf pitch. These facilities have been sub-optimal for some time and we have
been working with Barnet Council to reach agreement on a solution that will be a long-term benefit
to the School and the local community. We hope to make an announcement about this shortly.
In the last newsletter, I mentioned our intention to introduce an online post-box facility on the
School website for questions to governors. This should be available in the next couple of weeks.
You can still send any comments or questions for the Governing Body either through the School
Office or by email to [email protected].
On behalf of all the governors, I wish you and your families a very Happy Christmas and best
wishes for the New Year.
Sebastian WoodChair of Governors
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the
sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces in the UK and
around the world. The aim of this is to raise vital funds and
awareness for men's health, specifically prostate and testicular
cancer.
For this year’s now traditional video, The Compton's male staff
showed off their dance moves in their own version of GangnamStyle. You can view the excellent choreography on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnIElqIHgVE&safe=active
At the last count, on 10th December, the school community had
raised £720. Donations are still welcome and if you would like to
contribute, the link for the Compton Movember page can be found

JACK PETCHEY AWARDS EVENING
Awards for the Perfect AmbassadorsOur nine Jack Petchey Award winners
for 2011-12 attended the celebration
evening for all the Jack Petchey winners
from Barnet at the artsdepot on 27th
September.
Our students did a fantastic job of
representing the school, dressed in perfect
school uniform and accepting their awards
from the Mayor with great pride. The
comments made by peers and staff as to
why the students should win were read out
to the audience, with the presenter
finishing by saying "What lovelycomments. It certainly sounds like anexcellent school".
Another highlight of the evening was The
Compton Choir performance. They sang
"Shelter" with Maya Patrick-DeCosta
singing the verses solo. The students were
a real credit to the school.

This year, 20 Year 9 students are taking part in an Architecture inSchools programme run by Open City. The programme has involved
20 of our students going to Queen Mary's University to meet two
architects and studying the variety of buildings in the University. This
trip was followed by two workshops run by Miss McTavish and Miss
Davis and the two architects. The workshops involved the students
designing and building models for a new pop-up building of their
choice. The students chose both the location and the function of their
building. The model will now be entered into a national competition
against other schools and colleges. This programme has been an
amazing opportunity for all involved and given students an insight into
the world of architecture.

Drama - Act Iby Zoe Merritt
A Christmas CarolThis year the Drama Department's
winter offering was based on Charles
Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Our cast of
40 students from Years 9 - 11 worked hard
to tell this ghostly tale. The performances
took place in the school hall on
Wednesday, 19th and Thursday, 20th
December.
A special thank you to the Art and D&T
departments who worked hard to create
set, props and costumes for the play.

newsletter for photos and reviews.
GCSE DramaPerformance Evenings
Our Year 11 Drama students are
working hard on creating their final exam
performances. They are working in small
groups to devise their plays and are
looking forward to performing them at the
end of January to family and friends before
the examiner visits The Compton in
February.

the West End which was run by the Royal Shakespeare
Company. They were then invited to see the performance of
Much Ado About Nothing, a modern interpretation of the play
set in India. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance
and were fantastically behaved.
Jessica Baker said, "The play was very funny. It was anexcellent day!" and Liban Mohamed added "It was fantasticaland I enjoyed every minute!"
Dillon Depala noted, "We learnt an abundance of dramatechniques and the play was brilliant: you couldn't be bored!"Blessie Simbol said it was "A fantastic day out, and to top it alloff, we got the opportunity to watch a brilliant play," while

HURRICAN KATRINA COMES TO TCS
The Day the Waters Came
YEAR 7 DRAMA CLUB
Letting off creative steam
The Drama Department organised a
visit from Theatre Centre to perform TheDay the Waters Came by Lisa Evans. So,
on Thursday, 22nd November 2012, Year
9 watched the play, which reflects upon
the events of Hurricane Katrina in New
Orleans in 2005. It is fast paced with epic
and intimate scenes; the piece provides a
wealth of stimulus for political, geographic
and dramatic debate which, in turn,
provides cross-curricular opportunities in
English and Geography as well as
Drama.
In response to the play, students
performed script excerpts, debated about
issues raised and wrote a theatre review
of the performance, developing a range of
literacy skills.
The cast were impressed by the
politeness and positive behaviour of our
Year 9 students during and after the
performance in the question and answer
session. Well done everyone!
Here are some of the comments from
students:- "Adrian Decosta, in my opinion,
was the best actor because he played 13characters in the play which shows thathe has a good memory and was the mostskilled by changing into other characterswithout difficulty." Eren Ali, 9N
"The Day The Waters Came was afunny and dramatic experience." Chloe

Wow, what a talented year group! Once every fortnight Year 7s
have been swarming towards the Drama Department to have an
incredibly creative fun hour of improvisation and theatrical antics.
It has provided the Year
7s with the opportunity to
make friends in their year
group and let off some
creative steam!
We have explored,
created and performed,
Oracles, Roast Dinners,
the story of Sleeping
Beauty, Ramlila (folk
theatre in India), Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky and more!
With such a talented year group we hope to see you all at the
auditions for our whole school summer musical later on in the
year!

thoroughly enjoyed themselves, especially
as we had front row seats!

On 18th September, Vicky Bell from the artsdepot provided a one-off drama workshop
for a selection of our students. This involved team-work activities and inspired some of
our students to pursue further work with the artsdepot. Amir, 8O has now joined the youth
theatre: "I enjoyed the workshop; I was inspired to get involved with the artsdepot youththeatre and now I look forward to it every week. We are currently working towards aprofessional performance, so I am glad that I took this opportunity."

YEAR 10 WORKSHOPS
Old Vic New VoicesThis year, we have been lucky
enough to be part of the Old Vic New
Voices theatre programme. This
means that 19 of our Year 10 GCSE
students are provided with four free
workshops throughout the year and
the chance to watch four
performances at the Old Vic Theatre
in Waterloo, again, for free!
The first performance we saw this
year was Hedda Gabler. The
students’ immediate response for the
whole experience was "hilarious, shocking and surprising".
The next performance will be KissMe Kate.

Sleeping Beauty keeps Year 7s awake
On Monday, 9th July
2012, The Compton
School once again
celebrated its wide and
diverse community with
Compton's Got Culture.This biennial event is a
showcase of entertain-
ment featuring music,
dance, drama, food and
art representing nation-
alities from around the
world.
The evening began
with both a feast for the
eyes and stomach! An Art
exhibition, organised by
the Art department,
showcased the best work
from across Years 7, 8
and 9 and the fantastic
food treat, featuring the
now legendary TCS BBQ,
was assembled by a
group of staff and
featured dishes such as
stuffed vine leaves, Jollof
rice and Qumbe. Huge
thanks go to the
countless staff who
contributed dishes.
The show opened
spectacularly with a
drumming set from the
London School of Dhol
featuring students from
the Compton School;
Adil, Anuj, Yash and Ravi
actually opened the
performance on their
own!
The show continued
with another amazing
performance from our
very special Compton
Singing Club. They sang
several pieces across the
evening, including
Refuge and You RaiseMe Up. They also sang
an amazing piece that
featured a very special
performance from
George Lesbriel on
BeatBox.
The excellent Brass
Ensemble, led by Ms
Cheadle, gave rousing
renditions of Kenilworthand The Great Escape.
A real highlight of the
evening saw Gabriel
Musker combine his
Cornet skills with a team
of drummers (Olona, Adil,
Anuj, Emmanual and
Bradley) to perform a
Latin favourite, Tequilla.
The school Rock Band
also entertained playing a
beautiful version of MyImmortal by
Effervescence.
The Drama
department’s KS4 Drama
students presented
Compton's GotShakespearian Talent, an
entertaining take on the
popular TV show, whilst
the KS3 students
performed drama pieces
from around the world.
There were also several
dance performances by
the KS3 Dance Group,
representing the cultures
of India, Ireland, Spain
and England.
An evening of
entertainment would not
have been complete
without some audience
participation and 7N duly
obliged. Led by Ms
Cabeza and Ms Tierny,
they taught the entire
audience the numbers
from one to 10 in
Spanish, using a little
song and dance to help
aid the learning!
The whole evening
was a wonderful success
and showed off the wide
range of talented
performers that we have
at our school. Over 100
students were involved in
the show and huge
thanks go to each and
every one of them.
A massive thank you also
goes to all of the staff who
helped to make the
evening so special. This
event would not have
been possible without
their huge extra
contributions.
Keep your eyes posted
for future whole school
productions that will be
happening soon!

MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Musical Notes by Angelina Barlow
Twelve Gifted and
Talented musicians along
with Ms Barlow and Ms
Gray attended a
performance of the opera
The Magic Flute by Mozart
at the London Coliseum.
It was a fantastic
performance with students
captivated by the music
and the action on stage.
Students thought that it
was "awesome, brilliant, fantastic". It certainly blew
away the stereotype that
Opera is boring.
The Coliseum itself was
also amazing; the
students got to see its
beautifully decorated
ceiling, and, as the
London Coliseum is near
Trafalgar Square we also
had a look at other famous
buildings in the vicinity:
the Tate Gallery, National
Portrait Gallery and St
Martin's in the Field.
As a result of our links
with the ENO, a lucky Year
10 student has been
offered a work experience
placement.
The Music Department
will be offering another
opera trip so if you think
you would like to
experience this, speak to
Ms Barlow or Ms Gray.
Run by our fantastic student
leaders Alice Gregson and Taran
Patel, all students are welcome
to attend guitar club every
Tuesday, 2.50-3.30pm. Guitar
Club is open to all students and
is a great way to learn how to
play the guitar or continue to
develop your skill. Recent
pieces learnt include A Team and
Hotel California.
Boys’ a capellaThe Music department is working
collaboratively with Alex from the
Penny Arcade. The Penny Arcade is a
professional male a capella quartet.
They have just released an album,
turned on the Christmas lights in
Southwark and appeared on Children
in Need.
Our a capella group is open to all
boys and runs every Wednesday, 3-
4pm. The boys will be performing for
the first time at the Christmas Concert
on Tuesday, 18th December. If you
are interested in joining just turn up on
a Wednesday. This group will run all
year.

This term, Design and
Technology has been very
busy with some fantastic
projects. Students have been
working hard to produce
creative designs and high
quality products. So far this
term, The Compton has seen
its Year 7 students creating
fantastic cards inspired by a
Festival of Light of their
choice. We are creating a
new 'achievement display' on
the D&T corridor to share
some of the fantastic cards
they create with the wider
school community.
Year 8 Product Design and
Textiles students have been
creating some fantastic high
quality products which are
good enough to sell. The
MySpace box project and The
Bag projects have been a
huge success.
Year 9 Product Design
students have been working
hard to produce miniature
scaled chairs for their desks.
This is a new Scheme of Work
and has been greatly enjoyed
by the students.
Year 9 Graphics students
are producing some wonderful
logo design ideas that they will
be printing onto T-Shirts,
Hoodies and Bags as part of
the great new 'Stuck on you'
Project
Year 10 Product Design
students have been producing
some really wonderful night
light designs which they have
been prototyping, to develop
their skills ready for their
coursework project.
Year 10 Food Technology
students took part in a 'bake

Inspired by the Summer of Sport - Oarsome EmilyInspired by the Summer of Sport - Oarsome EmilyThis term's sporting
interview is with EmilyKilduff, Year 11.
NC: So Emily you spent two
weeks of your Summer
Holidays working at the Great
British Garden in the Olympic
Park with Mr Hammond, Mr
Kyprianou and Mr Merritt
along with other selected
students.
EK: Yes, it was an amazing
experience. I met so many
interesting people and had the
bonus of getting into venues
like the Water Polo arena and
we even made it into the
Olympic Stadium to watch
'Super Saturday'!
NC: So you were truly
inspired by your experiences
this Summer?
EK: Yes, so much that I
have taken up rowing.
NC: Where do you do this?
EK: At the London Regetta
Centre - near the Royal Albert
Docks.
NC: And when do you train?
EK: Every Saturday
morning and sometimes
Wednesday evenings for two
to three hours.
NC: What does training
entail?
EK: Well, we row along the
docks which is usually about
2km. Then we practise rowing
techniques and then finally, we
race.
NC: That sounds
exhausting!
EK: Yes it is but it's really
good fun and really improving
my cardiovascular fitness.
NC: Are you training for
anything in particular?
EK: Yes, there are various
competitions throughout the
year which, if we are good
enough, we are entered in.
NC: Have you been
selected to compete in any?
EK: Yes, I have a race in
February. So I'm training even
harder.
NC: Good luck for that Emily
it's brilliant to hear that you
have been motivated by the
Summer of Sport and
hopefully you will inspire other
students to participate in a
new activity in the coming
year.

GGiirr llss’’ FFoooottbbaallllMs Bailey has worked hard this term coaching and training our

Commitment and dedication has paid off: the Year 7 and 8 team
and Year 9 and 10 team have both reached the quarter finals of the
Middlesex Cup, which will be played at the end of January 2013.
Both teams are currently top of the Barnet Leagues. A fantastic
