by Daniel J. Yee President’s Message

Congratulations To Our 2014 WUSV Universal Sieger Competitors:The WUSV Universal Sieger Championship took place on June 20 to 22, 2014, at Slovakia. The United States Team was well represented by Doug Jeffery/Elle Rallhaus, Rick Shair/Gipsy vom Rosenschlag, Erin O’Shea/Zambo vom Riedschlurgi; and Cheryl Nance/Chloe v. Bullinger with Kevin Nance as the Team Captain.*

Erin and Zambo (two-time WUSV Universal Sieger Champions) placed third among the teams entered in the male class. Cheryl and Chloe placed third among the teams that competed in the female class.Rick and Gipsy came in eighth place in the female class. We extend huge congratulations to each of you. You all did a wonderful job of representing the United States at this very important WUSV event! Sincere appreciation and thanks go to Kevin for taking good care of the team.

The competition at the WUSV Universal Sieger Championship was intense. 45 teams from 12 different countries competed. The teams from Germany, Slovakia and Belgium earned high honors for placing first, second and third, respectively.

(*Note that Montell Brown/Hendrix von den Oher Tannen were also part of the United States team, but could not participate because Montell was not fully recovered from a bout with pneumonia. Montell is now fully recovered and we expect to see more of him and Hendrix in upcoming events.)

Best Of Luck To All The German Sieger Show Exhibitors:The annual German Sieger Show takes place this year at the historic city of Nuremberg, from September 5 to 7. We expect that the

WDA will be well represented at this event, as in past years.

In addition to showing, many WDA members attend this event to support as well as to keep abreast of the relevant news and developments that are important to the improvement of the German Shepherd Dog.

We extend our best wishes to everyone for a safe and pleasant German Sieger Show and the best of luck to all exhibitors!

18th Annual North American Sieger Show:The WDA will host its18th Annual North American Sieger Show at Dallas, Texas, from October 10 to 12, 2014.

For the past 32 years, since 1982, the WDA has been promoting the improvement of the German Shepherd Dog by sponsoring WUSV/SV-style events in the United States.

In 1997, the WDA began the annual tradition of hosting the premier national SV-style conformation show for German Shepherd Dogs in North America. That event is known as the North American Sieger Show (“NASS”). In 2013, the WDA made history by combining the NASS with the very first WUSV North American Sieger Show. Today, 18 years after the inaugural NASS, that tradition continues in Dallas with the WDA making history again by having the same two judges who judged the male and female working classes at the German Sieger Show as officials at the NASS! This is an absolute first for the United States!

Lothar Quoll (the current National Breed Warden of Germany) and Leonhard Schweikert (the former National Breed Warden of Germany) are coming to the United States, directly on the heals of the German Sieger Show in Nuremberg,

to judge the 2014 NASS/WUSV North American Sieger Show. Mr. Quoll will judge all the male classes. Mr. Schweikert will judge all the female classes, as well as conduct a breed survey on October 9, 2014, the Thursday preceding the show.

Carl Smith and Rory Kennedy are the helpers of the performance evaluation for the dogs entered into the working classes.

The 2014 NASS/WUSV North American Sieger Show will be well-attended by both United States and international participants. This will be the perfect opportunity to catch up with worldwide friends who are in the German Shepherd Dog sport.

Annual Membership Meeting:The annual WDA membership meeting will be held at 7:30PM (Central Daylight Time) on Friday evening, October 10, 2014, at the Westin Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Hotel, 4545 West John Carpenter Freeway, Irving, Texas 75063. The Westin Dallas/Fort Worth Airport Hotel is the host hotel for the NASS/WUSV North American Sieger Show.

As in the past two years, the WDA Board is working on arrangements for satellite meeting locations. Information for these satellite locations will be announced by email and posted on the WDA website, as soon as the arrangements are complete.

Good Luck To The United States At The WUSVWorld Championship In Haguenau FranceThe 2014 WUSV World Championship will be held in Haguenau, France, from October 5 to 12, 2014.

WDA members, Sigrid Riess-Mundry and Jacob B. Pope, Jr. (with their dogs, Ayro vom

Vogelbergblick and Hammer Haterproof von Stan, respectively) will represent the United States.** WDA member, Michael Conley, is the Captain of the United States Team.

We wish the very best of luck to all the United States team members!

(**Note: Jacob and Hammer are alternates on the United States Team. The team selection was determined at the 2014 WUSV Joint Qualification Trial and is based upon the scores awarded to each participant. As a result of the Joint Qualification Trial, Janis Skeath and

her dog, CJ Maserati vom Schweizerhof, were selected as first team alternates. CJ, however, took ill and was not fully recovered on the date of the WUSV Entry deadline. Accordingly, Janis and CJ are not included on the United States team roster.)

GSDCA/WDA Update:The Colorado and Arkansas lawsuits between the WDA and the GSDCA continue.

A July 21, 2014 hearing was scheduled by the Colorado Court for the purpose of hearing the WDA’s application for a preliminary injunction against the GSDCA.

By stipulation of the parties and approval of the Colorado Court, that hearing was postponed. No new hearing date is set. Any new hearing date will be subject to the approval of the Colorado Court.

In the interim, the Colorado Court has ordered the parties to mediation. The Arkansas lawsuit is stayed per court order.

Updates on the lawsuits, including updates on both the preliminary injunction hearing and the mediation will be provided as information becomes available. x

Erin O’Shea does not waste time. She finished a Ph.D. in two and a half years, rose from novice to world champion dog trainer in under three, and, at age 47, is moving into an executive leadership role at HHMI.

The eldest of five children, O’Shea is just six years older than her youngest sibling Meggan. Both women describe their middle class upbringing in western New York as happy and ordinary. Their father ran a residential contracting business, and their mother left a career in physical therapy to run the household. All the O’Shea kids performed well in school and excelled as athletes.

But there was something different about Erin. “She was intensely focused, much more so than the rest of us,” says Meggan O’Shea. “With Erin it’s always been, she’s going to do what she wants to do, she’ll do it very, very well, and she’ll do it fast.”

Andrew Murray, a longtime colleague of O’Shea’s, puts it another way: “Soon after people meet Erin, if you were to ask them how fast this woman could gnaw through a quarter-inch bar of steel, they’d be like, ‘oh, probably 90 seconds.’” After hearing O’Shea present her research as a graduate student, Murray was so impressed he helped recruit her to the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and later to Harvard University, where she’s been since 2005.

O’Shea, an HHMI investigator since 2000, maintains a prolific research lab focused on understanding how cells sense and respond to their environment. Her contributions range from discovering how single cells adapt at the molecular level to changing levels of light and stress to analyzing randomness in gene expression patterns. Her work has advanced the broad understanding of basic biological mechanisms and helped scientists studying cell growth patterns in cancer and other diseases.

In July, O’Shea will become vice president and chief scientific officer at HHMI, moving with her husband Douglas Jeffery to Chevy Chase, Maryland, where HHMI is headquartered. She views the job as both an opportunity to do something new and as a natural extension of her past work—as a scientist, administrator, mentor, and educator.

Influencing UndergradsBy the time O’Shea joined Harvard, she felt an obligation to give back to the scientific community by training and educating the next generation of researchers. As director of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Center for Systems Biology, O’Shea has recruited and mentored many junior faculty. With a tight-knit

HHMI’s new chief scientific officer Erin O’Shea applies an uncommon intensity to her research and training—of students and German Shepherds.

group of colleagues, she created an innovative undergraduate science course.

“A lot of people with her level of accomplishment are not great listeners, but she’s interested in people and makes time for them,” says Dan Kahne, a Harvard chemistry professor who created the course Life Sciences 1A with O’Shea and four other faculty members. “With students, that’s very important. It doesn’t have to be all about her.”

The enormously popular course is a matter of pride for Kahne, O’Shea, and the others on the faculty team. They present science as a detective story at the intersection of chemistry and biology—the two disciplines that drive progress in the life sciences today. Students explore a handful of experimental case studies rather than a body of facts and prefabricated lab exercises. The course draws more than 500 students a year, and O’Shea reports that the number of life science majors at Harvard has grown by 40 percent since its inception.

“We choose topics that capture students’ interest and motivate them to learn the underlying detail,” she says. “We tell them like mystery novels with a thread that hooks them all together.” O’Shea keeps regular office hours for her undergraduate students, meeting with them one on one and often helping them find research positions in labs.

“I came to Harvard in part because I wanted to teach undergraduates, because the people who taught me at that stage of my education had a big influence on my career,” she says.

Sparks of InterestAs a high school student in Leroy, New York, O’Shea enjoyed learning about science but envisioned herself as a veterinarian or doctor. It wasn’t until her sophomore year at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, that she learned what it meant to do science. She began conducting research on catalysts in an inorganic chemistry lab and was allured by firsthand discovery.

“I was excited to be doing something where, unlike the science course labs I’d had before, we didn’t know the answer. We were actually finding the answer,” she says.

Her famous focus kicked in. “There was a pretty marked change in her,” says her sister Meggan. “She had found something that she loved and put all her energy into it. By the second part of her sophomore year, she was around a lot less. We all noticed it, that she was really dedicated to what she was doing.”

By the time Meggan entered Smith in 1989, her sister had published a groundbreaking paper as a graduate student in Peter Kim’s lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It had people

talking. “My bio professor said to me, ‘Are you one of the O’Shea’s?’ and I knew she was taking off,” recalls Meggan.

Driven by QuestionsErin O’Shea distinctly remembers the moment that fueled her running start. In the latter part of her senior year at Smith she began working at MIT’s Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. One afternoon the following summer, she was reading the journal Science at a picnic table outside the Whitehead, where she had taken on a short-term research project on nucleic acids in Kim’s lab. A paper by Steve McKnight, a biochemist now at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, described a protein motif called the leucine zipper—a key part of many transcription factors that guide cells to turn genes on and off.

“I had this idea that McKnight’s model was basically correct but wrong in detail,” she remembers. O’Shea had taken a course at Smith that focused on a class of structural proteins called coiled coils, and she thought she recognized their hallmarks in McKnight’s protein motif.

So she went to Kim, who had worked on protein folding, and he let her try to make the peptide and see if it was a coiled coil. “And it was. It was a big result in the field of protein folding, and it was an idea I had come up with. It was very exciting.” O’Shea’s work changed the way the scientific community understood the leucine zipper and, by extension, how transcription factors interact with genes.

To her parents’ dismay, O’Shea decided not to enter the M.D., Ph.D. program at Yale. She had no alternative long-term plan. Instead, she stayed at MIT to follow the leucine zipper trail in Kim’s lab. “It wasn’t some big vision I had about how it would help my career. It was more, I want to do these experiments, and I have to stay here if I want to do them.” The following January, she was admitted to MIT’s Ph.D. program, funded by an HHMI predoctoral fellowship.

She solved the crystal structure of a leucine zipper in fine detail two years later, a paper that caught the attention of Francis Crick, famed for his discovery with James Watson of the DNA double helix. Crick had proposed the structure of a coiled coil in the 1950s. He wrote the young O’Shea a letter, congratulating her on the high-resolution structure. Her confidence boosted, O’Shea presented her work in a seminar at UCSF the following year.

Andrew Murray was a junior faculty member at UCSF at the time. “I went home and told my wife I’d seen the best seminar I’d ever heard, and it was given by a graduate student who looks like she’s fresh out of college,” he recalls. “It was a combination of the quality of the work, the way she framed it conceptually, and the confidence and panache with which it was presented.”

UCSF offered O’Shea a faculty position—a rare opportunity for a scientist just out of graduate school—and gave her two years to do whatever she wanted. She split the time working with HHMI President Robert Tjian, who at the time was a Hughes investigator at the University California, Berkeley, and with Ira Herskowitz at UCSF.

In Tjian’s laboratory, O’Shea became interested in how gene expression is regulated by chromatin—the tight packages of DNA and proteins inside the nuclei of cells. It was a divergence from her protein structure work. “Tjian was incredibly supportive, even though I was heading in this new direction,” she says. “He wanted my curiosity to guide what I did, rather than telling me what approach to take.”

At that time, much of the transcription field was focused on studying transcription in test tubes, says O’Shea. She wanted to examine the system in a physiological context, inside the chromatin.

That decision led her to the Herskowitz lab, where researchers were studying transcription factors in yeast. Herskowitz had determined the genetic pathways that allow yeast to reproduce, and he supported O’Shea’s decision to refocus on biology. “I was used to doing physical chemistry, so it was another big change in my career track,” she says.

Expert TimekeepingThat change stuck. At Harvard, O’Shea’s lab of 15 students and postdocs, which occupies a modest space on the second floor of the FAS Center for Systems Biology, is surprisingly diverse for its size. Lab members represent half a dozen countries and just as many disciplines, and they study biology at the cellular level in mice, yeast, and bacteria. No question is off-limits as long as it is both interesting and important, says O’Shea, but the lab’s primary areas are still gene expression and regulation—how cells turn genes on and off or dial them up and down. In recent years O’Shea has also taken an interest in the molecular clocks that govern circadian rhythms—the 24-hour patterns of activity that help organisms predict the availability of and respond to warmth, light, and nutrients.

“There’s something special about the clock in the cyanobacterium,” says O’Shea, referring to the blue-green algae that are responsible for 70 percent of all photosynthesis on Earth. The molecular clocks inside cyanobacteria anticipate daylight and then drive the production of proteins needed for photosynthesis. “There was this remarkable paper where a Japanese team [led by Takao Kondo] showed they could take the three proteins that make up the clock, mix them together in a test tube, and reconstitute oscillations with 24-hour periodicity,” O’Shea says. In other words, the clock proteins appeared to be sufficient to keep time, independent of any other processes of the cell. This was contrary to conventional wisdom, which held that circadian clocks are governed by cycles of transcription and translation in a cell—in which a gene produces a protein that performs a task and then eventually halts its own production. When O’Shea read the paper, she couldn’t resist asking: how do these proteins function absent those cellular cues?

“People thought the clocks in all organisms had a common architecture that relied on this transcription–translation feedback,” she explains. Instead, the clock appeared to rely on biochemical interactions of the three proteins. To stay synchronized for weeks at a time, it needed only to be supplied with the energy-storing molecule adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Kondo’s team had wowed the biochemistry community with this news, but the mechanism by which these three proteins kept ticking remained a mystery. Intrigued, O’Shea tested the proteins in different conditions and eventually described the process by which it happened—phosphate groups from the ATP being the key ingredient—in a detailed mathematical model.

The Meaning of MentorshipThe cyanobacterial circadian clock is a small but illustrative piece of O’Shea’s research portfolio. She encourages the researchers in her group to follow their interests and develop questions independently, even if they diverge somewhat from her own. Two of her postdocs, for example, are testing drug-screening

platforms, projects that are more clinical than O’Shea might choose out of a more fundamental curiosity about the way things work. Team members view her as a decisive but relatively hands-off leader who invests her energy and attention where it will have the most impact.

“Erin manages her time very well,” says Xu Zhou, who just completed a Ph.D. in O’Shea’s lab and will soon begin a postdoc in the lab of HHMI investigator Ruslan Medzhitov, an immunologist at Yale University. “She will tell you when she’s available to review your paper or grant, and if you send it on time, she is there waiting. You know when she sleeps, because the emails stop around 11:00 at night and start again at 5:30 in the morning.”

As Zhou became more confident in his research, O’Shea stepped back, giving him freedom to follow his instincts and troubleshoot his own problems. But when it came time for him to apply for postdoctoral positions, she became an everyday presence again, making herself available to speak with the researchers Zhou interviewed with. In the end, he received offers from each one.

“She says few words, so when she does, it’s kind of like it’s pronounced from the heavens,” adds Tim Peterson, a gregarious postdoc who is working to develop drug screens for a class of bone diseases. “When I wrote my first grant, I sent it to Erin when the deadline was a couple of weeks away. She had some suggestions, so I revised it. Then every day or two for the next few weeks, she’d send me a few more questions or changes,” he says. She kept coming back until it was better than solid. “It was this really interesting refinement process, not entirely painless, but the end product was excellent.”

Enter ZamboAll evidence suggests that is the O’Shea way. In 2007, O’Shea and her husband were at the Denver airport when a working German Shepherd caught her eye. O’Shea’s family had kept German Shepherds as pets, and she loved the energetic breed—though she knew they required more time and attention than the mellow bulldog she had at home.

“Right then I told my husband we should get one, and he’s like, sure, okay. That’s what he’s always like,” O’Shea remembers with a laugh. They found a breeder and bought a four-month-old puppy named Zambo, a “gorgeous, red and black little thing.” Soon, dog and owner were immersed in the training sport called Schutzhund, in which judges rate dogs on anatomy, obedience, and agility.

“Schutzhund is like a religion in Germany, but I had barely heard of it. I just figured I had to get some obedience training anyway, so why not try it,” she says. Zambo was a natural at the sport. Soon he was winning local competitions and placing in the top 10 nationally, with O’Shea as his handler.

“One day I was Googling the word ‘Schutzhund,’ and the next thing I knew I was spending three months in Germany with Zambo, preparing for the world championship,” she says. It paid off. Zambo earned the world championship title in 2011. At age 3, he was the youngest winner ever, an early achiever like his owner. Rumors of a fluke victory circulated, but Zambo won again the following year. After that high point, O’Shea decided it was time for him to retire: “Like Michael Jordan, you gotta go out on top,” she laughs.

“That’s just what Erin does,” says HHMI professor Richard Losick, another Harvard colleague. “She picks something up, because it’s

important or because it interests her, and before you know it, in the blink of an eye, she’s the best in the world.”

The Leadership Stamp “Erin is one of those people who have leadership stamped on their foreheads,” says her friend and colleague Andrew Murray. “Sometimes when she’s running at full intensity, it is easy to mistake her for one of those people who is occasionally wrong but never in doubt. But she has the intelligence, courage, and grace to go back and reflect, and if necessary, rethink her position. She has great judgment as an administrator.”

In her new role as vice president and chief scientific officer at HHMI, O’Shea will lead the Institute’s flagship Investigator program and its many extensions. She will maintain her Harvard lab, Skyping in for lab meetings and returning in person every month.

As at Harvard, O’Shea sees her most important job at HHMI as finding, recruiting, and supporting the best people. “If you want people to succeed, you’ve got to pick the people well and do everything you can to support them,” she says.

For O’Shea, offering support often means yielding control, says her colleague Dan Kahne, citing an analogy from a shared trip to the O’Shea family’s lakeside cabin in New Hampshire. Kahne recalls: “My wife and I weren’t sure about bringing our kids, but Erin said, ‘Are you kidding? Pack up the water skis and bring everyone.’ She was the only one who would let my son take the canoe out by himself. I told her that was a good way to lose a canoe. She said, ‘But look how much fun he’s having. It’s the only way he’ll learn.’”

Giving scientists freedom—to explore untested ideas; to pursue unexpected leads; to enter, and even forge, new disciplines—is a cornerstone of the HHMI model. As Kahne sees it, there is no one better suited to deliver on that promise than O’Shea. x

May – June 2014 13

On September 5 through September 7, 2014, the World Series and Super Bowl of German Shepherd Dogs descend upon the beautiful city of Nuremberg, Germany. This event is returning for the fourth time to this fine venue. The German name for this event is “Bundessiegerzuchtschau” which we will refer to hereinafter as the German Sieger Show or BSZS.

It is not uncommon to have 3,000 dogs entered from almost 50 countries. The 55,000 SV members support the numerous SV events from hundreds of shows and hundreds of trials and HGH events. The catalog itself is over 230 pages chock full of famous historical kennel names along with up and coming breeders. And the commercial or vendor area is a shopping mecca for everything you would need to train, show, feed, groom, and transport your beloved German Shepherd Dog. Other vendors offer everything from trainer wearables, all the way across the gamut to GSD door knockers in brass. Some vendors have large and elegant tents offering a sitting area with fresh coffee and beverages to discuss your needs or simply to get you acquainted with their offerings. One of the most unique vendor areas is where you can find every type of bovine bones, chew sticks; bully sticks and supplements (just follow the scent).

Wear your walking shoes as the venue in Nuremburg has these key areas for each activity or discipline:

• Grundig Stadium (divided into 2 fields until Sunday, when it becomes 1 giant field)

• Youth Males (Zeppelin Field)• Youth Females

by Larry Vinzant

• Young Males • Young Females• HGH Class• LSTH Males• LSTH Females• Male ring for “Stand for Exam”• Female ring for Stand for Exam”• SV Tent• Camping Area (In high demand)

Luckily there are plenty of refreshment stands between venues and truthfully the complex is perfectly set up with plenty of seating area in the stadium and the Zeppelin Field. During the performance tests, held in the stadium, if you select a good seat, you can watch both the working males and females as they present themselves with a 2.5 meter curtain separating the stadium into two areas.

The German food vendor’s area offers every type of typical German food you can imagine. From fresh crepes, sandwiches, ice creams, wurst (sausages) (of all colors). Okay, here is a list:

• Streuselkuchen (Crumb cake)• Schweinebraten (Pork roast)• Maultaschen (Type of pasta)• Sauerkraut (A sour tangy tasting dish

that is made out of shredded cabbage)• Frankfurters (Hot dogs)• Spätzle (Type of pasta)• Brathänchen (Fried chicken)• Buletten (Meatballs)• Bratwurst (Fried sausage)• Flammekuchen (Also known as 'flame

cake'. This is a thin layer of pastry that is topped with cream, onions, and bacon. Cheese and/or mushrooms are sometimes added as well.)

• Frittierte Zwiebelringe (Fried onion rings)

• Doboschtorte (A seven-layer cake with mocha cream)

• Rote Grütze (Red fruit pudding)• Salzburger Nockerl (A dumpling

soufflé)• Nachspeise (Dessert)• Lendensteak (Sirloin steak)• Jägerschnitzel (A cutlet that is prepared

with mushrooms and peppers)• Zwiebelsuppe (Onion soup)• Schlachtplatte (Cold cuts and sausage

platter)• Sauerbraten (Marinated beef )• Currywurst (Fried or grilled sausage

served with curry powder and ketchup)• Speckpfannkuchen (Pancakes served

with bacon)• Stollen (A cake with citrus peelings)• Mettwurst (Soft smoked sausage)

The BSZS consists of these 3 classes:1. Youth Class (12-18 month)2. Young Dog Class (18-24 month )3. Working Dog Class ( 2 years and up

with titles)

Keep in mind each class has males and females, and “stock coat” and “long stock coat with undercoat.”

Thursday is a rush to get in line with all the competitors to present your paperwork and documentation and then to receive your numbered vest. The numbered vests are reusable and must be returned to get your trophy or get a fee from the SV for a replacement. After you get your numbered vest/s, it’s time to tune up your dog for tomorrow. A good dinner with friends makes the evening fly by.

Friday is here and if you have an adult dog it’s time for your performance evaluation. If you can imagine 6 male and 6 female helpers rotating in and out and hundreds of dogs are presented to the Performance Judge in the stadium. The crowd is very vocal on every dog, either with applause or disappointment in the performance test. At first glance you might think this is easy, but, the attack out the blind (this routine does not exist in the IPO routine) can be nerve racking to the handler and the dog in a 30,000 capacity stadium with screaming fans, helpers that are fast as lightning and no guarantee of which helpers are assigned to your dog. If you get by the attack out of the blind, you are halfway there with only the long bite to be accomplished. Fingers crossed your dog is fast, has a calm grip and outs.

In the last few years the Performance Judge also critiques the dog on a 5 point system on both phases over the public address system. Below are the possible scores and outcomes:5 PointsDog reacts quickly, directly, energetically and conclusively, dog exhibits a calm, full grip in all phases of the defense exercises. Dog releases after the allowed command and shows powerful guarding with strength.

4 PointsReacts at once and conclusively, shows a good grip but not completely full and is somewhat anxious in all phases of the defense exercises. Releases after the allowed commands and shows good guard phases with good hardness.

3 PointsReacts with hesitation, should show more speed and impact, and slows down a little. Show a short grip which should be fuller and calmer, does slip but immediately re-grips. Releases after the allowed command and shows good guarding phase.

2 PointsReacts with hesitation, undetermined, grips with hesitation, slack grip, is weak and ineffective. Releases after the allowed command, and should show more power in the guarding phase.

1 PointDoesn’t react, doesn’t follow, doest grip or guard.

So if someone tells you a dog had 4-4 or a 4-5, that is a great score, but a 5-5 is awesome. At this juncture the Performance Judge also issues the TSB judgment. Disqualifying actions can include failing to heel after 3 attempts, handler help, no out after 3 attempts, gripping other parts of the body, handler helping on long grip.

So if that is not enough, in another ring outside the stadium, younger classes are being judged and the adult dogs go immediately from the performance tests in the stadium to an even different ring for their “stand for exam.” At the peak of activity 8 or 9 rings are being used on the campus.

Saturday is another action packed day with younger dogs being judged in the Zeppelin arena, shopping in the dozens of vendor booths, meeting old friends, observing the finest German Shepherd Dogs and seeking to meet a breeder with a specific bloodline you have been studying. Today is also the day the progeny groups exhibit,

through their offspring, the traits from their father. The hundreds of campers also have a culture unto themselves as they cook, groom, walk and enjoy either a private meal or a communal tent wherein groups of campers go in together to have a temporary “mess hall.”

Sunday is the day. Hopefully the sun is out and the weather is good as you fend off the chill with a hot cider or strong hot coffee. Today the finalists in all categories will either be presented or shown. Just a reminder, each age group has males, females, stock coat and stock coat with undercoat. The absolute pinnacle is the showing of the top females and males in the working class. The field has been expanded to almost encompass a full professional soccer field. These dogs are pushed to the limit in lap after lap as the Judge assesses gait, structure, stamina, strength and endurance. The dogs yearning for a VA or high V status are required to be gun sure and perform 1 fast lap with no leash. In this exercise, the judge examines the unfettered movement of the animals and their ability to stay in position with their handlers.

By early evening the VA and high V dogs have been selected. A beautiful stage is quickly brought onto the field with decorative flowers and the long awaited trophies are presented. Both cheers and tears are apparent as the winners exit triumphant and others did not fare as their owners had hoped. But fear not, we will work hard all year, and be some of the first to register for the 2015 BSZS.

A visit to the BSZS or BSP is a great opportunity to see the highest caliber German Shepherd Dogs in the world. Many countries are enjoying success with their own GSD breedings including Italy, Spain, The Netherlands and the USA. Put this event on your bucket list. x

22 GSDCA-WDA: The Complete German Shepherd Dog

The North American WUSV Sieger Show will be held in Dallas, TX, this year on October 9-12, 2014. The Sieger show is the culmination of a year of hard work for breeders, trainers, handlers, and their families in the effort to create that perfect German Shepherd Dog.

This year the NASS-WUSV will include a Breed survey wherein the SV Breed survey master observes the temperament, gunfire sureness, and performance work. Additionally the Breed survey master will measure the height of the dog, observe the dog in the “stand for exam” and evaluation of movement. After completing the survey the Breed survey master will announce the results. The GSDCA-WDA website offers a listing of the pre-requisites to enter a Breed survey. The owners of the dog receive a temporary Breed survey certificate that has been signed by the Breed survey master, awaiting the official Breed survey document.

The Breed survey is the highest Breed qualification and emphasizes the dogs that are recommended for Breeding. The Breed survey is good for two years and then a lifetime survey can be accomplished inside the two-year window. Breed surveys are done on “stock coat” and “long stock coat with undercoat.” The maximum number of dogs to be Breed surveyed is 50 per day, any number beyond that would require an additional half-day. The GSDCA-WDA is a German Shepherd Dog organization that adheres to the Verein für Deutsche Shäferhunde (SV) as closely as possible in the United States of America. The WDA is proud and honored to be so closely aligned with the SV in Germany. The long-standing delivery of SV trials, shows and SV-mandated prerequisites has enabled the WDA to be appreciated and respected by the SV.

Friday begins with performance test practice for the working males and females. Additionally, the younger dogs begin their ring work and judging by the two SV Judges, Lothar Quoll - Males (SV Breed Warden for the entire Breed)

and Mr. Leonhard Schweikert - Females (Former SV Breed Warden). Herr Quoll is the NASS Male Judge and German Sieger Show (BSZS) Working Male Judge for 2014. He is the current SV National Breed Warden and one of the greatest historians of the Breed in the World. NASS Female Judge and German Sieger Show Working Female, Judge Mr. Leonhard Schweikert, is a former SV National Breed Warden. He is Breeder of the Kennel "Aus Agrigento." He is considered one of the world's most knowledgeable judges.

The venue for this event is a large 6-8 soccer field complex reserved exclusively for our NASS. A short 13-15 minute trip between the hotel Westin-DFW makes this an ideal location. Numerous, well-known vendors will be there to market everything IPO and Ring-training related. Two unique food providers will have nourishments for all.

Saturday progresses with the actual performance work with titled males first, followed by titled females. Immediately following the performance test, the “Stand for Exam” will begin for the above dogs. Young dog classes (12-18 months ) are being evaluated with stock hair first and long stock with undercoat next.

Saturday evening and night at the Westin-DFW is where new friends are made and new old acquaintances are rekindled. The stories will flow about past NASS events, regional shows, the BSZS, latest breedings and acquisitions. Into the night we will celebrate the Breed and friendships made recently and those lifetime friends made due to the true German Shepherd Dog. The Westin-DFW is a premier hotel with ample free parking, beautiful public areas, and plush rooms. The staff and management of the Westin-DWF look forward to your arrival with your dogs. A bathing area for the dogs will be made available.

Sunday culminates the event with staging of the Progeny Groups, Young Dog classes (18-24 months), Working classes in the ring, and Veteran and Kennel Group competition. Award ceremonies are

eventful as we honor Young Dogs, our Siegrin and Sieger, our VA and V working class, Progeny and Kennel Groups and Special-Performance awards.

If you’ve never been to a NASS event, you need to come to Dallas with your dog(s) and experience the camaraderie and knowledge of hundreds of years represented by the numerous participants, breeders, helpers, handlers and trainers. Spend some time to meet the judges and learn from their insight in the Breed in Germany. Spend time meeting breeders, handlers and helpers to help us all improve, in America, the Breed we love so much, the true GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG. x

Man Trailing Essentials

by Jo Collins

Part 3, Conclusion

In “Man Trailing Essentials,” parts 1 and 2, the articles focused on the American Mantrailing, Police and Work Dog Association (AMPWDA) membership, both law enforcement officers and civilians, what equipment we need, what we do, and where we train for search and rescue, as well as what law enforcement officers do to keep their communities safe.

In this article I want to focus on the dogs of AMPWDA. Man trailing is not limited to specific breeds. There are a lot of Blood Hounds and German Shepherds on the trails, but there are other breeds as well, for example, the Cane Corso, Beagles, Dutch Shepherds and many mixed breeds also participate. Eagerness to work, good scenting ability, solid physical conditioning, and even temperament are prerequisites. All dogs involved in this activity must be friendly, well-mannered, non-aggressive toward people or other animals, and trained not to jump on anyone. Obeying commands from their handlers is essential, so they must have sufficient training to be able to trail a victim who may be weak or ill without creating a situation that might endanger the victim.

As an organization, AMPWDA does not buy or sell dogs or place dogs with individuals or agencies. Our dogs belong to our members, who have been successful using Portuguese Water Dogs, Labradors, Australian Cattle Dogs, Australian Shepherds, Border Collies, Pitt Bulls, Golden Retrievers, Blood Hounds, Malinois, German Shepherd Dogs, and many other purebreds along with mixed breeds. We have used rescue dogs found in shelters and in breed-specific rescue facilities. Some police departments also benefit from having rescue dogs that have been trained by their police K-9 trainer, in the process not only saving the life of the

dog but also easing the strain on the fragile K-9 unit budget. All of these dogs come for training once a month in Cloverdale or Rockville, Indiana, and some have been cross-trained for other jobs in addition to man trailing, for example, in protection or article search. The police dogs, of course, are trained for what law enforcement needs them to find. The purpose of AMPWDA is thus twofold: the police look for fleeing felons, escapees from prison, and fugitives from the law, but AMPWDA also searches for people who have become lost or are the victims of a hurricane, tornado, or other type of disaster.

As man trailers we could not do our job without the help of our dogs’ keen senses and determination to “find their man.” The handler and dog aim to be a team working in perfect unison on the trails. But the handler must always keep in mind that he is working with an animal and there are factors that may throw a dog off scent. Sometimes natural elements make the task difficult: wind or water from an earlier rain might be enough to throw the dog off scent for a short time. This is not a bad reflection on the dog, nor does it make the handler and dog a less good team.

In training we want our dogs to be successful. If the trail is lost for some reason, we go back to the starting point and retrace our steps. The more positive their training experience, the more they want to go out on the trail and please us. Remembering to keep a positive attitude in training benefits everyone: the victim, the community to which we are volunteering our time and skills, our fellow man trailers and our dogs. The dogs of AMPWDA do a lot for us, and at the end of the training day they are happy to receive a kind word, a scratch on the ear, a bowl of kibble, and some down time to relax and be dogs. x
