The company was founded in 1937 as a " the Mordkin Ballet “and then reorganized in 1940 under a new name, as Ballet Theatre. In 1956 the company was renamed American Ballet Theatre and retained this name until now. In 1960 the company became the

first American ballet companies, an invited to dance in the Soviet Union.
