Acts 10:34, 37–43 Ps 118:1–2, 16–17, 22–23

Peter's speech at the house of Cornelius, the first Gentile convert to Christianity, summarizes the early Christian kerygma: God has anointed and sent Je-sus, whose ministry of word and deed was in fulfill-ment of God's will, as were his death and resurrec-tion. As a witness to the resurrection, Peter's task is to preach the gospel and invite others to believe, for through belief we are forgiven our sins and we are saved. This speech leads to Cornelius's baptism, and the gospel begins to take root in the gentile world.

Paul, in writing to the Corinthians, tells them that Christ is our paschal lamb who has been sacrificed for us. In light of this, we are called to clear out the "yeast" in our lives. Our lives should be lived in loving obedience in response to God's gift of eternal life. We must rid ourselves of the old way of life and take on the way of God.

In John's Gospel we are told that Mary Magdalene came to the tomb "while it was still dark." For John darkness represents the lack of faith; recall that Nico-demus had come to Jesus at night. Mary's first re-sponse to discovering the empty tomb is to presume that Jesus's body has been stolen. Her visit is fol-lowed by a visit from Peter and the beloved disciple. Peter remains "in the dark," but the other disciple be-lieves. The evangelist explains this to us by saying that "they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead" (20:9).

For Reflection: Our belief in the resurrection is based on the word of those who went before us — not just the disciples and saints but our own parents and god-parents and others. Does my life serve as a witness to others of my belief in God's goodness? What "yeast" is there in my life that needs to be removed so that I can live a new life in Christ? Do I look for meaning in life by studying and reflecting on God's word? Do I need evidence, or can I rely on faith? How can a faith developed in good times help me as I struggle through difficult ones? ML

EEEEvents for the Week April Generations of FaithApril Generations of FaithApril Generations of FaithApril Generations of Faith We will continue our theme of Eu-charist, which we explored from our Jewish roots in our Seder Supper, in our April session, when we focus on the sacrament of Eu-charist. This is the sacrament that is most often celebrated. Do we realize the implications of what we are doing when we say "Amen"? Come join us as we explore the rich tradition in the Catholic church that is Eucharist. Our sessions will be Sunday, April 15th after the 9 AM Mass and Monday, April 16th at 6 PM in the gym of the parish center. All in the parish are welcome.

The 10 minutes-a-day reading of the New Testament has been a wonderful exercise in understanding scripture. It is not too late to join us on Thursday mornings from 9:15-11 AM in the Faith Formation Office to explore this wonderful book we call the bi-ble. We will provide coffee and snacks. We just ask that you bring yourself and a bible. You do not have to attend each week. Even if you are only able to at-tend once a month, we are sure to provide you with something to think about that will enrich your faith and your reading of the bible. All adults in the parish are always welcome.

St. Vincent dePaul News:St. Vincent dePaul News:St. Vincent dePaul News:St. Vincent dePaul News: Today as we celebrate the feast of Easter we find the challenge of also seeing and believing the resurrec-tion that comes through our own lives of self-sacrifice which brings new life to others. As you place your gift in the Society of St. Vincent de Paul envelope, know that you are a sign of God’s love to those who are suffering and you give them Easter hope and joy. We are waiting to help someone or a family who is out of work and needs assistance. Maybe they are experiencing a temporary setback. Please suggest to them to call 374-8800 and leave a message. Some-one from our Society of St. Vincent de Paul will return their call.
