THE HAMPDEN ARMS ACREFAIR

YSGOL ACREFAIR GARDEN AWARDOur school gardens have been developed over the past few years startingwith raised beds and tubs in the central quadrangle using old tyres paintedby the children. This was followed by the Reception garden and this yearwe created a garden for Years 1 & 2. A major project was making an ‘eco’greenhouse from plastic bottles that will extend our growing season. Thechildren use mainly recycled materials for their gardens and also harvestseeds for the following year from the wild flowers to attract pollinators andplant a good range of vegetables that they take home when harvested. They are planning a Nursery garden for next year. The enthusiasm andenjoyment show by the children when planting and harvesting is a joy tosee and we invite any parent and grandparent with a hour or two to spare to come and help, when theyshare their experiences with you is something quite special. The gardens get the children interested inwildlife, conservation, general gardening and where food comes from. The gift voucher awarded by theCommunity Council will help to buy a solar powered irrigation system for our new greenhouse, thank you.

MAELOR ABC King Street,Cefn Mawr, the Club has nowstarted back after the summerbreak and is open Monday toThursday 6 to 7.30pm.Boxing Tournament on Saturday7 November 2105 at FlexsysCommunity Halls 2pm start.

THI UPDATE SIX MORE BUILDINGS TO BE RESTOREDSix more buildings to be restored through the Cefn Mawr Townscape Heritage Initiative and works on all of themshould be underway within the next few weeks. Well Street will see a substantial transformation with 5 buildingsImproved. The sixth is Plas Kynaston converted to provide six new apartments for sale.Crane Street has seen the biggest revival since the THI started in 2006, it is now a much nicer place with manylittle businesses lining the thoroughfare, with shops restored to their original character, some with residentialaccommodation above, as in their heyday. Now it is Well Street’s turn, the five properties, some of which havebeen neglected for years, all of them benefiting from having their heritage features restored, helping to makeCefn an even brighter place to live in, work in and visit. Restored they should attract businesses to the area, encourage existing businesses to stay, whilst residential refurbishments will make the village an even moreattractive place to be. The buildings are: Deva House; Central Buildings; the Old Bank (the other, older one); 29Well Street, and Belgravia House, (K9s Pet Grooming Salon). Deva House & Central Buildings are two of themost prominent, and important, buildings from the heritage perspective with wonderful examples of the beautifulRuabon brickwork and terracotta that the area became so famous for. They will be bought. back to their formerglory with restored traditional shop fronts and repairs to the imposing Ruabon brick and terracotta façades. TheOld Bank is another fine example of Ruabon brick and terracotta detailing. A residential property for some timenow, but the original features will be similarly restored, from the old commercial frontages, now living roomwindows, to the old door(s) and door openings. The ornate detailing will be carefully restored with the buildingmade waterproof and sound. Belgravia House, a rather unimposing commercial unit with its shop front almostblocked up, will see the re-instatement of a beautiful traditional shop front. Internally some J. C. Edwards tilinghas been discovered and this will also be restored recognising the important role this company and brickworksplayed in the history of the area. The restoration of one of Cefn’s smallest buildings No 29 Well Street, theformer taxi office opposite the George Edwards Hall, empty for at least 10 years, has one of Cefn’s mostbeautiful and characteristic old shop fronts. The impact of the restoration of this building alone cannot beunderestimated and the owner is keen to get a new business in the building for which there has been someinterest already. The biggest project is Cefn’s most important historic structure, being a Grade 2 listed building. Plas Kynastonhas already received full approval from the Heritage Lottery Fund who oversee the Cefn Mawr THI and providethe funding. This building was the home of the Kynaston family, linked to the Plas Kynaston foundry that builtthe Aqueduct. This old home will be converted into six self-contained apartments for sale; the first suchdevelopment of this type in Cefn. Plas Kynaston will help diversify Cefn’s housing offer, ensure that the village isan attractive place to live for more people. The THI will be contributing towards the restoration of the building’shistoric features. The project would not be commercially viable and remain derelict were it not for the THIintervention with the support of the Welsh Georgian Trust. The THI team has been working with Cefn CommunityCouncil, the Welsh Georgian Trust, and Groundworks to ensure that the restoration of the gardens around theHall can also play their part in leading the revival of Cefn. The first phase, including access, new planting, andnew seating to the rear of the Hall has recently been delivered. A second phase will see the Welsh GeorgianTrust who will be leading the project to restore the Hall working with all parties to ensure that the area to the frontof Plas Kynaston can also become an attractive facility for the local community, with interpretation of the historyand heritage of the building and the site. Although the Hall itself will go back to playing a residential role, and theparking and ’forecourt area will become part of the building’s curtilage, it is very much envisaged that the villageas a whole will benefit from the restoration of this building, both through a revitalised and restored Plas KynastonGardens but also from the views of the restored historic ‘Plas’ within that garden setting. This should furtherincrease the appeal of Cefn Mawr as a place to invest and could even become a place to visit by peopleinterested in the history of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and the industrialist families linked to it construction. TheWelsh Georgian Trust has undertaken to arrange for the building to participate in Heritage Open Days each yearwhen its hallway will be open for people to view the building’s historic staircase. The next six months will see a lot of building restoration undertaken through the Cefn MawrTHI as it enters the final year of its Phase 2 programme. The team is currently negotiating with the HeritageLottery Fund for the restoration of a further additionalbuilding, (the last under the Phase 2 programme), to becommenced within the 2015/16 period, more details ofthis will be posted later. These latest schemes bringthe total individual buildings that will have beenrestored under this phase to eighteen. When you addthis to the eighteen buildings restored under the THIPhase One this means that between 2006 and 2016 atleast thirty-six individual buildings will have beenrestored under the Cefn Mawr Townscape HeritageInitiative Phases One and Two.

P K C G R O U P U P D AT E

The PKC Group organised 2 meetings at theHolly Bush Inn in June to help address the lackof tourism reaching the centre of Cefn Mawrdespite being next to the top tourist attraction inNorth East Wales, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. The first meeting was with Eastman’s, now theowners of the Ex Monsanto Site, WCBC, CefnCommunity Council and other interested partiesin the Cefn to try and form a working group toget Cefn Mawr on the tourist map.

One of the issues that has to be addressed is thefact that Cefn Mawr keeps getting left out, andthe sign posting in this picture is a starkexample of such. The aqueduct and Ty MawrCountry Park are sign posted but where is CefnMawr? Getting our village sign posted is anextremely important issue which we are puttingat the forefront with our recommendations forinclusion in the LDP2. This will help transformour community into a tourist destination in itsown right.

A second meeting was also held the followingday where our local community joined in andthe LDP2 which can hold out great possibilitiesfor our area was discussed. We thank all thosethat came along and look forward to seeingevery one again. If we are to make a positive

difference to our community and get it on thetourist map this will be directly linked into howmany of us join in. We are advocating that theWindborne Gate Parking Area be opened up andused as the maincentral parking area for this section of the WHS.This will give people direct access from the carpark to the aqueduct AND the centre of the villagewith equal walking distance. Secondly we wouldlike to see the road through the ex Monsanto Siteopened again linking the centre of the villagedirectly to the aqueduct and we know this is apopular idea with many people. So please comealong to our next meeting and join in. We need toshow our community wants a better deal thatworks and works well.

Our proposals for the LDP2 can be downloaded from our website under the LDP page,http://plaskynastoncanalgroup.org/ldp2/
