A Brief History Of Lincoln

The Romans conquered this part of Britain in AD 48 and built a legionary fortress high on a hill overlooking the natural lake formed by the widening of the River Witham (the modern day Brayford Pool). The Celtic name Lindon was subsequently Latinised to Lindum and given the title Colonia when it was converted into a settlement for army veterans.

The city has seen many cycles of economic growth and decline over the centuries. In the middle ages wool trading brought great wealth and the city benefitted from the county’s agrian boom in the eighteenth century.

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Lincoln became a centre for mechanical engineering and it is here that a revolutionary development in warfare equipment, the Tank, helped to break the back of the trench warfare that cost the lives of so many millions of soldiers in the First World War.

The tradition of heavy engineering continues on in Lincoln today with Siemens, one of it’s largest employers. There is now an even broader range of manufacturing and service industries, which in conjunction with the introduction of the Lincoln University and improved communications has seen the city’s economy grow significantly over the last two decades.

Our vision for this development...

has come from the City of Bath, the home of the grand sweeping Georgian crescent and the perfectly symmetrical circus. Lincoln also boasts many fine period buildings, exhibiting eye catching Palladian, Neo-Classical and Regency Architectural detailing, and like Bath, it too is a city with an ancient Roman past whose architecture is in part at the root of all Georgian building design.

The Colosseum is the crescent, the landmark development of homes, that uphill Lincoln has been missing for centuries, which we have now built for you. Each house in the crescent has been named after a British poet.

The only question I have for you now is, which poet will your home be named after?

Education

Lincoln and Lincolnshire are known for producing well educated talent. In the uphill district of the city there is private education with the very well respected Lincoln Minster School catering for ages of between 2 and 18. There areother respected primary and secondary schools to choose from in the area, many of which are a convenient walk or a short car journey away...

Food & Drink

As for refreshment, Lincoln is overflowing with cafés and tea rooms. Catch up over coffee and a cake, or pause on Steep Hill and share a classic English afternoon tea, as an excuse to catch your breath before continuing your climb up the cobbled street to the cathedral. Culture & Entertainment

From the Colosseum it is for most, just an easy walk or cycle ride away into the cultural heart of uphill Lincoln – the Cathedral Quarter. The Castle is at present undergoing a major refurbishment with a new museum soon to be completed for showcasing the Magna Carta. The toweringpresence of the Cathedral, possibly the finest example of English Gothic architecture, is never far away. It offers a range of interesting cultural events for the community and tourists throughout the year. Leading away south from Castle Square is the famous cobbled historic street, Steep Hill. It is aptly named, as in parts it has a 1 in 7 gradient! It won the award for ‘Britain's Greatest Street’ in the Urbanism Awards of 2012.

For those in search of higher education there is Bishop Grosseteste University, only a few yards away from the The Colosseum on the opposite side of the Newport and by the Brayford Wharf marina is the main campus of Lincoln University, which has been carving out a national reputation for success and over the last ten years has added great vibrance to the culture and business of the city.

Shopping

Lincoln shopping has a distinctive uphill and downhill split. In the uphill Bailgate shopping district of the cathedral quarter and on Steep Hill you have classy boutiques, fine wine merchants, tasty treats in a delicatessen; quality furnishings, a variety of art, design and crafts shops and of course even an old second hand book shop...

Think British, French, Greek or Italian dining and you will find it. Branch out and enjoy the taste of the Far East or Mexico on the Brayford Wharf or even on the floating river barge. Don’t forget the city’s many pubs, bars and restaurants selling a great variety of homemade food and more upmarket quality cuisine.

Downhill there is the pedestrianised High Street running through historic Stonebow with its wide range of national retail brand names and the accompanying Waterside and St Marks shopping areas. The Lincoln Christmas Market is now one of the largest festive events in Europe, attracting in the region of 250,000 visitors from the UK and abroad each year.
