WELCOMEFrom Seattle Theatre Group, a non-profit arts organization

Welcome to the first performance in our 2018-2019 KeyBank Broadway at The Paramount season, The Color Purple! This 2016 Tony Award winner for Best Musical Revival is a stunning re-imagining of an American classic that tells the story of a young woman’s journey to love and triumph in the American South.

As we kick off our KeyBank Broadway at The Paramount season, STG is also proud to have recently announced its upcoming 2018-2019 performing arts season, featuring an exciting lineup of artists who continually push the boundaries of their craft.

Highlights include Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) in its 50th Anniversary Celebration, featuring works co-commissioned by STG. Founded with the primary goal of providing access to the art form of classical ballet to people of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, DTH has grown into a globally-acclaimed dance institution that has occupied a distinguished place at the forefront of American artistic achievement for 49 years.

The season will also feature dance works from Tony Award-winning tap legend Savion Glover and trailblazing choreographers Kyle Abraham and Kate Wallich, as well as return engagements from Batsheva Dance Company and Company Wayne McGregor.

In the world of music, the Grammy Award-winning Soweto Gospel Choir honors the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela, while music industry icons Mavis Staples and Zakir Hussain take the stage at The Moore Theatre. A special concert honoring the work of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway comes to The Neptune, and we also welcome back Black Violin, as well as the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour with star Cécile McLorin Salvant.

STG offers two exciting theater productions next season with Barber Shop Chronicles, which explores the significant role barber shops play in African culture, and Roger Guenveur Smith’s Frederick Douglass Now, inspired by abolitionist and pioneering feminist Frederick Douglass.

Two inventive holiday performances include The Hip Hop Nutcracker featuring Kurtis Blow—a retelling of the classic tale that includes all-star dancers, a violinist and DJ—and A Magical Cirque Christmas. And there are many returning STG favorites such as our ever-popular Silent Movie Mondays, Seattle Rock Orchestra, and annual community programs such as DANCE This, More Music @ The Moore, Global Party, and Starbucks Hot Java Cool Jazz, among others.

We look forward to sharing all of these exciting performances with you and hope you enjoy tonight’s production of The Color Purple as we venture into the beginning of our 2018-2019 season!

Jeff Orton was one of the first employees hired at Collections Café. The café attracts guests from around world who dine among Dale Chihuly’s collections of Americana items. Jeff does not just work as a server in this vibrant space, but he’s also a performing artist. He has been in productions such as “Parade,” “Urinetown,” “ZM,” and has worked with theaters all throughout the city. His skill in entertaining an audience enhances the atmosphere for both dining guests and his coworkers.

If you visit Chihuly Garden and Glass, you might see one of our photographers offering to take your picture. These professional photographers know all the hot spots in the exhibition and city alike so with their help, guests can walk away with a free digital keepsake of their experience and expert advice on what to see and do in the Pacific Northwest.

Leslie Albin is one of our photographers. She has been taking photos since the age of nine and now primarily takes portraits of families, people and pets. A few years ago, she left an accounting job to pursue her passion full-time. “When I was working in a corporate role, people didn’t get me. Now I work with all artists, people like me – we get each other and inspire each other.” You can see more of Leslie’s work at lesliekalbinphotography.zenfolio.com.

Miles Lark talks to people all day long as part of his role at the Bookstore at Chihuly Garden and Glass. People are curious about Dale Chihuly and glass and the most frequently asked questions are about the process of glass blowing. Miles loves to share his insight and knowledge, which makes sense because he is an artist who works in the medium of glass.

We are thrilled that so many artists value working in a creative environment and choose Chihuly Garden and Glass. Their energy spreads to our visitors and in return they engage with the vibrant artists and culture of the Pacific Northwest, this creates a workplace where people continue to grow, lean and inspire others.

“Chihuly Garden and Glass has been such a blessing to me as an artist. Not only am I inspired by the art that surrounds me each and every day, but we are encouraged to succeed in our own artistic endeavors, and given the support and opportunity to pursue our personal passions outside of work.”

Shining a spotlight on creativity.

The arts enrich all our lives and are an integral part of our culture and heritage. It’s why we support arts organizations within our community. They inspire, entertain,

move, and inform us in so many ways. Without the arts our community would not be the vibrant and diverse place we enjoy today.

STG at a Glance

Nights at the NeptuneNow in its sixth year, Seattle Theatre Group’s free Nights at the Neptune series returns to provide a platform for the powerful artists and voices within our community. With community support from The Norcliffe Foundation, STG opens The Neptune Theatre to the community for six free performances each Thursday night at 8pm starting on July 12 and running through August 16, 2018.

Since 2013, STG has been producing the free Nights at the Neptune series as a way to create space for local artists and organizations to connect with the people of Seattle. The series’ focus is on art that relates to the pressing issues of our time; that honors and celebrates our shared cultures, and uplifts a more multicultural community!

Thursday, July 12th: Dare to Claim the Sky A journey through the honest and unfiltered body of work written and performed by Seattle based storyteller and arts administrator Sharon Nyree Williams, featuring an intimate and unapologetic conversation about family, faith, and the pain of being Black in this society.

Thursday, July 19th: #1hr2manupCombining samples that address social injustice, live music, and improvised rhyme, songwriter and producer Chris Anderson creates biographical performance pieces that reflect an inner-city youth grappling with his harsh environment. This project is supported by Artist Trust.

Thursday, July 26th: The Invisible VeganThis documentary offers both historical and contemporary perspectives on the dietary trends among African-Americans, showing how intertwined histories of slavery, 20th-century socioeconomic inequalities, and the rise of Big Food have led to the increased consumption and dependence of meat, processed junk, and fast food. This presentation is a partnership with Hip Hop is Green.

Thursday, August 2nd: Artist Watch 2018STG & The Seattle Sound Music Awards Present Artist Watch ‘18 featuring a collection of talented r&b and hip hop artists reigning from Western Washington who are making waves locally and creating a buzz nationwide.

Thursday, August 9th: Khu.éex: The Magic of NoiseKhu.éex is a unique musical experience that merges Native American cultural elements with funk and jazz. Renowned Seattle glass blowing artist Preston Singletary, who is also the bass player, has been the catalyst for coordinating this incredible group’s journey through experimentation, creation, loss and rebirth. This documentary by Hearthstone Media will be screened with a live performance. This project is supported by Artist Trust.

Thursday, August 16th: moonshine by Imana Gunawan (of Au Collective) Moon cycles have had the ability to transform worlds, creatures, and beings on earth since the beginning of time. moonshine, a new cabaret project directed and produced by Imana Gunawan, focuses on these themes and explores realms of oral storytelling, visual installation, costume design, and environment-stimulated dance composition.
