These tests are important because it is what the state uses to measure each school’s educational progress as well as individual student growth. ISTEP is a standardized test. Standardized tests use the same standards to meas- ure student performance across Indiana. Students take the same test according to the same rules with few exceptions. This makes it possible to measure each stu- dent’s growth against that of others in the state according to their previous ISTEP score. It is essential that we do very well on the ISTEP as a school. Principal’s Perspect ive The ISTEP is scheduled to be administered twice: once during the week of March

3rd and the second round during the first week of May. These tests are important

because it is what the state uses to measure each school’s educational progress as

well as individual student growth.

ISTEP is a standardized test. Standardized tests use the same standards to meas-

ure student performance across Indiana. Students take the same test according to

the same rules with few exceptions. This makes it possible to measure each stu-

dent’s growth against that of others in the state according to their previous ISTEP

score.

It is essential that we do very well on the ISTEP as a school. We have done many

things to prepare our students for this testing through classroom instruction and

daily Response to Instruction (RtI) opportunities. What we need to add are person-

al motivators for the testing. We want our kids to take the tests seriously and we

need our parents to help us in that regard. Please encourage your child to give

their very best effort on the tests. We will be announcing some incentives for our

students very soon. The bottom line is that we want EVERY student to demon-

strate growth over last year and that at least 94% of our students achieve a pass-

ing score on the ISTEP. We also have goals for each grade level based on growth

and the teachers have helped each student develop an individualized goal as well.

So, how can you, as a parent, help us reach our ISTEP goals? Glad you asked…

Calendar of Events

The cold weather has arrived, but learning is heating up on Team CSI. Continue to

check agendas nightly and the team website to keep up-to-date on current happenings

with homework and test dates.

In science, we will be getting smarter about the States of Matter and Energy. The stu-

dents will be able to explain why a substance changes states and how energy is conserved

in a transformation. The students will continue using an Interactive Science Binder for

learning, organizational purposes, and setting/tracking goals.

In social studies, students will begin working on the much anticipated country pro-

jects. Students will bring home information/requirement packets as they begin this pro-

ject.

February is a busy month in math class! In honors, we will be studying measurement.

Volume and surface area will provide us with many key concepts to learn. Chapter 10 in

the Holt book will prove to be a great resource. 2nd and 4th periods will finish up their

unit on proportional relationships and begin learning about integers. Chapter 11 will

provide great examples and practice of this concept. You can access our math book by

visiting my.hrw.com and using the username and password your student was given.

Practicing at home is necessary to learn more and master these concepts! In writing, we

will be focusing on informational (expository) writing. The students will be focusing on

the effective components of expository writing. In reading, we will continue to focus on

theme, point of view, figurative language, genres, and reading comprehension. Mrs.

Howard and Mrs. Helmuth’s classes will begin using Junior Great book stories as their

reading text.

TEAM C.S.I.—SIXTH GRADE

LEARNSTRONG—SIXTH GRADE

We would like to take this opportunity to make you aware of the activities

that will be taking place in our classrooms throughout the month of February.

In math, Mrs. Govert will be working with proportional relationships and

integers. Her honor’s math class will be looking at measurement of three-

dimensional figures and solving multi-step equations/inequalities. In social studies,

we will continue our work in the Middle Ages, and conclude the month in the Re-

naissance time period. In science, Ms. Pearson will be utilizing this month to focus

on ISTEP preparation. Finally, in Language Arts we will be working on how to write

an effective expository essay, and will be reading Tuck Everlasting (Balind, Pearson,

and Govert).

Plowing through the Snow for great learning in

the Tall Timbers!

This winter has brought lots of cold and snow and slowed many

people down, but in the Tall Timbers, we’re rolling along at top

speed!

During the month of February, math students will be tackling in-

tegers, dividing fractions and ratios and proportions. Honor’s stu-

dents will address the Pythagorean Theorem, volume, and the area

of circles. Science students will be exploring energy and matter,

and the Renaissance is the main focus of the social studies classes.

Language classes will be dealing with a variety of literary works.

Mr. Sumner will be doing a novel study on Tuck Everlasting. Mrs.

Santos will be working with reading, writing, and analyzing non-

fiction works, and Mrs. Bennett will explore character develop-

ment and theme as we work in the literature book and proceed in-

to a novel study of Number the Stars. The primary writing activity

will be working on expository writing to help prepare students for

the upcoming country reports in social studies. Vocabulary and

spelling lessons will come from a variety of sources: content areas,

reading selections, and generated lists. Grammar lessons continue

with the daily language practice, verb usage, and clauses and sen-

tence structure.

Parents, please be looking for some specific requests for our family

night gardening-themed baskets and a special surprise for ISTEP+

testing. Mrs. Santos will be sending emails just for you in the com-

ing month. We are just a month away from the first round of

ISTEP testing, and the March family night will be here before we

know it as we will be celebrating “SPRING”.

Social Studies

We are about to begin Unit 4: South and East Asia and the Pacific. We will

begin by looking at the geography of South and East Asia including India

and the Himalayas. Then we will explore the history of India, China, Japan

and the Koreas as well as the cultures of each. From Gandhi, Mao, Shoguns,

Samurai’s, Kim Jung IL, we will examine key figures in Asia’s history as

well.

English

In English classes, we will be reading Whirligig by Paul Fleischman, and in

honors English classes we will be reading MAUS by Art Spiegelman. Our

discussions of both novels will heavily focus on figurative language and lit-

Core Classes:

Mr. Betz's social studies class will be studying the history and geography of South

Africa, Ancient India and Ancient China. Also, we will be taking our second round

of social studies Acuity testing on Thursday, February 2nd. In science, we will end

the year with Forces and Motion. Students will learn about motion and the forces

that cause it, how gravity affects the motion of objects, and how the laws of motion

apply to life. This unit will continue to incorporate many hands-on labs. During the

3rd quarter, students in English class will study fiction again with the novel Whirli-

gig. In math, we are finishing up Chapter 9, which covered area and perimeter of

two-dimensional figures, as well as the Pythagorean Theorem. Next, we will begin

Chapter 10 which covers volume and surface area of three-dimensional figures. In

honors math, we are working on Chapter 8 which involves graphing linear func-

tions. Next, we will be covering Chapter 9 which is all about real numbers and right

triangles.

In social studies, we will begin to expand our nation westward. We will begin to

give insight on why the Civil War was inevitable. Students will have chosen

their Wax Museum characters and they should begin researching.

In pre-Algebra, students will be finding solutions for a system of linear equa-

tions by using substitution. After we solve the systems algebraically, we will

solve them by graphing. Students will discuss slope-intercept form and graph

using slope and the y-intercept.

In Algebra, students will use the properties of exponents to simplify expressions.

After grasping the properties, we will apply them to polynomials and begin fac-

toring polynomials.

In English 1, we will be learning about poetry, poetic devices and writing our

own poetry.

In science, we begin a new semester with cell biology. Students will be learning

the similarities and differences between plant and animal cell structures along

with describing the function of each of these parts. We will continue with dia-

grams and labs of living organisms. Mark your calendar…Team Titans Science

Fair is March 20th.

In English 2, we will be looking at our suspense unit. The stories will integrate

figurative language, and we will once again be focusing on reading comprehen-

sion and implementation of knowledge. The students will enjoy the stories pri-

marily because the endings will shock and perplex them!

In February, we will be discussing the Louisiana Purchase and the ven-

tures of Lewis & Clark. We will also concentrate on how America devel-

oped past the Mississippi River. We will venture down the Oregon Trail

and also discuss the California Gold Rush. Lastly, the classes will start

working on their final exam project known as the “Wax Museum.”

Science- Mrs. Betz .

In February, we start Biology. This semester we will focus on preparing

your child for high school biology. The class will focus on key skills needed

for freshman year. We start with comparisons of plant and animal

cells. We then look at what it means to be alive! Characteristics of life

will take us into March.

Mr. Popiela-English

In February, the students of Team Legends will be learning about theme

in English 2. The students will learn to identify themes across time and

cultures in a unit on struggles in American history. The students will

read such works as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech

and “The New Colossus” by Emma Lazarus among others.

To start the 3rd Quarter, we will be working on functions and graphing lin-

ear equations. This will build upon their prior knowledge of equations

and will prepare them for high school.

Mr. Bodak-English

In February, we continue our 3rd grading period. During this month, we

will be reading the first young adult novel ever written, The Outsid-

ers. This continues the learning goal of using literary analysis. We

should also begin our examination of poetry, both in music and in litera-

ture.

During the month of February, the Physical Education Department will be

participating in our tumbling, dance, and badminton units.

The second semester has begun. Students started in Health on

January 21st by taking a pre-test. This test is for the teachers to assess

student’s knowledge at the beginning of the semester. Students will

take the test again at the end of the semester.

6th, 7th and 8th grade classes are starting the semester by learn-

ing about the health triangle and health skills.

All students in Health must have a folder that will be kept in

the classroom. This folder will be used to help track student growth.

Remember that you can always check your student’s grades on

RDS. If you ever have questions about your student’s grade, please con-

tact their teacher.

Industrial Technology Education

3rd Quarter, 2nd semester here we come! As the new grading period is in full

swing, new ITE students are all geared up to start Industrial Technology Ed-

ucation. Here are the details of the basics of ITE – eight rotations are availa-

ble to all students where students will collaborate, critically think, and use

hands-on problem based learning techniques. Students work in a particular

station of their choice during a specific rotation. Providing a wide-range of

technological stations and several different learning styles are two main focal

points of the class. To learn more about each station, feel free to visit the

Paxton Patterson website at my school website. The featured station of the

month is Virtual Architecture.

Virtual Architecture

Students design a virtual dwelling. These cyber-images, which can be en-

tered and explored, permit students to add furnishings, windows, doors and

other requirements to meet aesthetic and design specifications. Students

modify the interior design and furnishings of a home or office. They learn

how to read a blueprint and the fundamentals of space planning and layout.

Please mark your calendars for FRIDAY MARCH 21, 2014. We will be

having an art show during the annual PTA Family Fun night.

During the month of February, we will be working on clay projects in

grades 6 – 8. Each grade level will have a connection to social studies.

Sixth graders have the opportunity to be inspired by Indian culture as

they research an animal that describes their personality. These animals

will be sculpted out of clay. Seventh graders get to create their own ver-

sion of an Egyptian canopic jar. Canopic jars were used to store organs in

them for the afterlife. The students will be creating a jar to hold some-

thing important to them. Eighth graders will be creating their clay piece

to resemble something from the Wild Wild West. Students are encour-

aged to add their own personal interests to these projects to make their

work more meaningful and exciting to create!

Is My Child Really Reading?

When listening to your child read, do you often wonder “are they real-

ly understanding what they are reading, or are they just reading the words or

reading them too quickly?” Truth is there are many components that lead to

true comprehension. The U.S. Department of Education has provided this

information to help parents help their children become better readers:

THE FIVE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF READING

Reading with children and helping them practice specific reading compo-

nents can dramatically improve their ability to read. Scientific research shows that there are five essential components of reading that children must be taught in order to learn to read. Adults can help children learn to be good readers by systematically practicing these five components:

Recognizing and using individual sounds to create words, or phonemic

awareness. Children need to be taught to hear sounds in words and that

words are made up of the smallest parts of sound, or phonemes.

Understanding the relationships between written letters and spoken

sounds, or phonics. Children need to be taught the sounds individual printed letters and groups of letters make. Knowing the relationships be-tween letters and sounds helps children to recognize familiar words accu-rately and automatically, and "decode" new words.

Developing the ability to read a text accurately and quickly, or reading

fluency. Children must learn to read words rapidly and accurately in order to understand what is read. When fluent readers read silently, they recog-nize words automatically. When fluent readers read aloud, they read effort-lessly and with expression. Readers who are weak in fluency read slowly, word by word, focusing on decoding words instead of comprehending meaning.

Learning the meaning and pronunciation of words, or vocabulary de-

velopment. Children need to actively build and expand their knowledge of written and spoken words, what they mean and how they are used.

Acquiring strategies to understand, remember and communicate what is

read, or reading comprehension strategies. Children need to be taught comprehension strategies, or the steps good readers use to make sure they understand text. Students who are in control of their own reading

comprehension become purposeful, active readers.

Parents of 8th grade students are invited to attend an informational

meeting at Crown Point High School on February 12th at 6:00 PM in

the High School Auditorium. This meeting is designed for parents to

receive information in the following areas;

Updated information on CP 2.0 Blended Learning /Bring Your

Own Device initiative

After the general session in the auditorium, parents will be able to visit

with representatives from academic departments. This meeting is de-

signed for parents. Other opportunities for the 8th grade students to

become familiar with the school and its programs will be offered prior

to the beginning of the 2014-15 school year. If you have any ques-

Give Kids a Smile Day

Concerned about the growing number of children who are unable to access needed

dental care, Dr. Susan Royer and Staff will provide free dental care to less fortunate

children on Friday, February 7th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Dr. Royer is among hun-

dreds of dentists across the state that have volunteered to provide free dental care on

the 11th Annual Give Kids A Smile Day.

Dentists are coming together to offer this day of free care to make a healthy differ-

ence in the lives of children, while raising awareness of the growing number of fami-

lies who don’t have access to dental care. They know they cannot treat all of the pa-

tients needing care in a single day, but their goal is to raise awareness of the problem

and help as much as they can.

Welcome to Col. John Wheeler Middle School Athletics. We offer a number of sports for each grade level:

Please use the Athletic Doors (back of school) located off Walnut Street for all dropping off and picking up student-

athletes. Please use these doors to enter athletic events.

Grade Policy for the 2013-14 school year has been updated. Eligibility will be determined at every progress report and

report card. Any athlete failing more than 1 class will be ineligible until the next progress report or report card. The

athlete must meet eligibility criteria to become eligible.

Athletic Physicals are mandatory for each athlete. Physical forms can be picked up in the main office. Physicals are

good from May 1, 2013 until May 30, 2014. An athlete must have a physical every year. Athletes cannot tryout or partic-

ipate until this form is turned in. Athletes must only have a physical once during each year.

All athletes must pay a transportation fee for each sport they participate in. The fee is $25 per season.

The Wheeler Library has EBooks!! We have a variety of AR levels for both fiction and nonfic-

Destiny). If you are reading from a device, they offer a free app called “Follett Enlight”. The

students use their school username and password to login to the book shelf.

PTA NEWS

Well, it is already February!

We hope everyone has saved the date, March 21st, for our annual Family Fun Night. It will be from 5:30—8:30 p.m. Our PTA has already begun gathering wonderful basket items to be auctioned. We also have secured new activities for our event, including a human hamster ball and a photo booth to capture those instant silly memories! Vendors will also come join the fun and set up tables to sell many unique items, proceeds of which will help to fund our PTA scholarship program. Students’ art work will be displayed and some of our band/choir students will also be performing while our families are enjoying their pizza and snacks! Mark your calendars…

We have many more bake sales coming! Students really enjoy the variety of goodies that parents have brought in. It is a special treat after their lunch! All items sell for $1.00 each and the proceeds help many of our school groups such as Drama, Choir, Science Olympiad, etc. Our next bake sale is scheduled for February 14th. We will have packaged baked goods along with individual carna-tions for sale.

Thanks to the dedicated parents and support from teachers, staff, and administration! We are mak-ing a difference during our students’ middle school days! There is still time to part of our PTA. Please feel free to join us at one of our two February meetings: February 13th at 1:30 p.m. or Feb-ruary 18th at 6:30 p.m. Involvement can be fun!
