AN INDIVIDUAL. What is the message it sends? For men, your bag can telegraph power and individual style. It can position you as strong-minded and a forward think-er, or someone who follows the style or trend. The bag you carry is your safe, your portable jewelry box and your first im-pression. It is your identity, it finishes your look, it conveys your style and it is your portable assistant when you’re in a meet-ing — or on the road. I threw out all my previous notions that have swayed me to the big names through relentless advertising. BORLINO® was love at first sight. These leather luxuries became a must have. The Boutique Exclusive Edition from IWC brings together three successful and stunningly beautiful models in red gold. The exquisite timepieces are available in strictly limited editions exclusively from IWC boutiques.

The Boutique Exclusive Edition is the crowning glory for Schaffhausen’s tradition-steeped watch manufacturer. Three out-standing models – the Portuguese Hand-Wound Boutique Edition, the Ingenieur Automatic Boutique Edition and the Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Boutique Edition – will be issued in red gold: a small but all-important difference. All three models, as rare as they are beautiful, will be available exclusively from IWC boutiques. Visitors to the stores, one of which opened recently at number 61 in Zurich’s famous Bahnhofstrasse, can look forward to professional expertise at the highest level, gain a fascinating insight into the world of IWC and savour a special type of exclusivity in the form of the Boutique Editions. With a choice of three limited models in warm, 18-carat red gold cases, this year’s Boutique Exclusive Edition references some of the most exciting phases in the com-pany’s long and wide-ranging history. The Portuguese Hand-Wound Boutique Edition comes in a 44-millimetre Portuguese case fitted with the 98295 calibre. Back in 1939, its predecessor was the first pocket watch-sized model designed for the wrist. With its unusual dimensions, unconventional move-ment and understated elegance, it estab-lished a whole new genre in watch design. The pocketwatch movement of the Portu-guese Hand-Wound Boutique Edition has seen further improvements but still includes

many of the design cues found in the first movements developed by company found-er F. A. Jones. These include an elongated in-dex, which is used to set the effective length of the balance spring and extends from the balance cock over the three-quarter plate. The watch, featuring a sapphire-glass back, silver plated dial, red gold Arabic numerals and slender “feuille” hands, will be limited to just one thousand pieces worldwide. The Ingenieur Automatic Boutique Edition recalls another exciting era in IWC’s history: during the late 1940s and early 1950s, the company’s legendary Technical Director Albert Pellaton developed the first IWC automatic movement with a pawl-winding system. The mechanism was named after him and is still used by IWC today. The 80111 calibre, which replaced it sev-eral years ago and was developed specially for the modern versions of the Ingenieur, is now even more robust. It is also the driv-ing force behind the Boutique Edition with its brown dial and red gold indices, and can be admired through the sapphire-glass back in the original Ingenieur’s 42.5-millimetre red gold case. This model is limited to 500 pieces. The third model in the trio brings us even closer to the present day: the red gold Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Bou-tique Edition comes with a perpetual cal-endar and the original 46.2-millimetre case diameter of the Big Pilot’s Watch launched exactly ten years ago. An impressive time

machine with a gold-plated dial featuring the time as well as displays for the date, day, month, and year in four digits and double moon for the northern and southern hemi-spheres. The 51614-calibre automatic move-ment has a seven-day power reserve. The time remaining is displayed on the watch dial. Equally unique and typical of IWC is the independent, mechanically programmed calendar with its complete, four-digit year display, which will require no correction un-til the year 2100 and can be advanced, to-gether with all the other calendar displays, in one-day steps via the crown. The Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Boutique Edi-tion, the biggest of the three models in this special edition, also comes with a sapphire-glass back. It is limited to 250 pieces. With a clear focus on technology and devel-opment, the Swiss watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has been producing watches of lasting value since 1868. INTERNATIONAL BUYERS recent article in Forbes Magazine headlined “Real Estate Tourism: Who’s Really Buying America’s Homes,” told the story of Russian billionaires snapping up some of the most opulant homes in the United

States. Sometimes overpaying by 100%, like on a $100 million Silicon Valley mansion in 2011. Of-ten buying multiple homes. However, it’s not just the Russians. Sales to buy-ers from mainland China and Hong Kong account for over $7 billion in sales annually. Second only to the Canadians who are a purchasing in force in sunbelt states like Arizona and Florida. Canadi-ans have also been buying in the Midwest, includ-ing Chicago. “Close proximity to Canada makes it an easy place for Canadians to invest money,” Bob Krawitz of RE/MAX Signature in Chicago is quoted in the Forbes article as saying. He says in-terest runs along all price points, from distressed properties that can be fixed up and rented out to seven-figure mansions along Lakeshore Drive.

WHY ASPEN?Aspen has seen a continued rise in overseas buy-ers especially from Russia, Mexico and South America. The charm of Aspen reminds those from Europe of their home countries. spen’s Hotel Jerome, built by Macy’s president Je-rome Wheeler, has been a landmark in Aspen since 1889. The 123 year-old

“crown jewel” is now an Auberge Resort and has undergone a remarkable and ex-tensive renovation. The hotel was closed for several months in late 2012, and de-buted in December, much to the delight of local residents.

Much of the property’s layout, in-cluding the 93 guest rooms and suites, have been architecturally preserved but significantly redesigned by renowned architects Todd-Avery Lenahan of TAL-Studio in Las Vegas. Aspen based Row-

land + Broughton provided research to ensure structural improvements and historical accuracy. “The hotel returns as the center of Aspen so-ciety,” says Brenda Wild, owner of The RE/MAX Collection in Aspen. “The grand ballroom, with its streaming natural light, has been host to many social gatherings in Aspen. This transformation provides the ultimate in resort stays.” The only departure to the hotel’s original style is the hotel’s spa. Clean lines and contempo-rary fixtures adorn the treatment rooms that will offer a range of massages and skin care services tailored specifically for those who enthusiasti-cally engage in the wide array of Aspens’ outdoor activities. The Jeromes J-Bar, an Aspen favorite wa-tering hole, retains its treasured Chippendale

Each year, Forbes Magazine ranks America’s Most Expen-sive Zip Codes. Five hundred zip codes are analyzed and ranked. Forbes contracted with Altos Research, a very respect-

ed real estate data company, and this year’s list looks a little different. For the first time, the most expensive home listed for sale is in the 10065 zip code in New York City’s Upper East Side. This yet unbuilt $40 million dollar townhome will feature a glass elevator, waterfall, and subter-ranian pool. The median asking price in the 10065 is $6.5 million, compared to the me-dian of $5.75 million in Alpine, NJ, which held the top spot for many years until slipping to number two in this year’s list. New York City’s real estate market is said to be “frothy.”

Cherry Hills Village, the 80113 zip code, has always made the list and this year landed at number 46, with a median asking price of $2.307 million. Cherry Hills Village is the third most expensive zip code in Colorado, topped only by the 81611 in Aspen, and the 81654 in Snowmass. Fourteen Colorado zip codes made the list including the 80121 in Greenwood Village, the 80108 in Castle Rock (including Castle Pines Village and Castle Pines North), and the 80302 and 80304 zip codes in Boulder. Cherry Hills Village is down from a rank-ing of 37 on the list, but the median asking home price of $2,195,000 did increase by 5%. Aspen, Snowmass and Snowmass Village rank highly thanks to a bevy of estates listed between $20 million and $40 million.

What You Can do to Reverse Underachievement in The Classroom

ll individuals have the ability to learn and attain self-fulfillment, however many young people are at risk of failing to achieve their academic potential. Gifted

students are one group of exceptional learners who are not normally considered at risk for academic failure. However, the underachieve-ment of academically gifted students is an area of concern and frustration for many parents, teachers, and counselors. Why do some stu-dents, who seem capable of outstanding per-formance, fail to realize their potential? What causes some gifted students to underachieve in school? Can we predict which gifted students are at the greatest risk for underachievement? What can we do to reverse a student’s academic underachievement? While there are many factors that contribute to achievement, students who are achievement-oriented appear to exhibit three key percep-tions and a behavior. First, and foremost, they find value in their school experience. School is meaningful. They enjoy what they are doing or believe that what they are doing will produce beneficial outcomes. Second, they believe that they have the skills to be successful. Third, they trust their environment and expect that they can succeed in it. When students have positive attitudes in each of these three areas, they are more likely to produce self-regulated behavior. Self-regulated learners set realistic expectations and implement appropriate strategies for aca-demic success. Some of these four components may play a stronger influence than others, but overall, we believe that achievement-oriented individuals possess some combination of them.

Valuing Academic TasksFirst and foremost, students must value aca-demics. “When students value a task, they will be more likely to engage in it, expend more ef-

fort on it, and do better on it” (Wigfield, 1994, p. 102). Students who do not value the goals of school do not find any purpose in what they are learning, they don’t see any pay-off for learning it, and they’re not interested in learning it, so they turn off and tune out. The following are some minor modifications that will increase the task value of activities for students:

Encourage and promote your students’ interests and passionsHelp students to see beyond the immediate ac-tivity to the long-term outcomes. A school as-signment may seem unimportant, but pursuing a dream career may be an outcome that your student is willing to strive toward. Parents and educators may wish to share how they use vari-ous skills learned in school in pursuit of their career choices. Help students to set short and long-term academic goals. Small, short-term goals work better for younger students. It is essential that the goals are meaningful to students. Talk with them about possible goals. Remember, goals that adults value may have little meaning to children. Students are more likely to become engaged with material that is optimally challenging. En-sure that all students are challenged (but not frustrated) by classroom activities.

Self-EfficacyYoung people must also believe they have the skills to perform the task. Self-efficacy refers to individuals’ judgment of their capacity to perform specific activities. The perceptions students have about their skills influence the types of activities they select, how much they challenge themselves at those activities, and the persistence they exhibit once they are involved in the activities (Bandura, 1986). Students need to believe that they have the

skills to be successful. This can be accomplished by help-ing them recognize the skills that they have developed. Two factors need to be present: First, they must believe they have the skills to do well and second, they must be aware that they didn’t always have those skills (the skills were something they developed). The way we compliment young people has an impact on how successful they perceive themselves to be. It is important to be specific with comments. A general com-pliment such as “Good work” does not carry the weight of something more specific such as “You really know your threes times tables.” The latter provides more in-formation about what has been performed well. The stu-dent will likely reflect on the comment and think, “Yes, I am good at threes.” Students are able to better cogni-tively appraise their progress when feedback is specific or when we’ve helped them be aware of specific things they do well. Of course, compliments must be genuine and earned. Complimenting children for tasks that they did not perform well or for unchallenging tasks can be counterproductive and diminish their trust. In addition to helping students recognize the skills they have, you need to help them understand that their abilities are not strictly innate. Dweck (1975) demon-strated that students who believe abilities can be de-veloped and are not fixed are more likely to attempt challenging tasks and persevere more in the face of

difficulties than students who believe abilities are in-nate. When we discuss a student’s achievement with him/her, we ought to mention specific skills he/she has developed by drawing attention to the skill and to its development. We need to balance the role effort and ability play. This can easily be accomplished by recog-nizing the skill as something the student developed (without drawing undue attention to the effort used). For example, “Look at how well you’ve learned your threes tables” is more effective than “You are good at your threes tables.” The word “learned” indicates that this is a skill that didn’t always exist and implies that future skills can also be acquired.

Environmental PerceptionsStudents who view their environment as friendly and one that will provide positive outcomes are more likely to demonstrate achievement-oriented behavior. It is not enough to be confident that they have certain skills, they must expect that they will succeed if they put forth effort. Rathvon (1996) hypothesized that, “The under-achiever’s failure to assume responsibility arises from his unconscious belief that his own efforts do not affect the events or individuals in his world” (p. 66). Student’s perceptions of the friendliness of the envi-ronment may or may not be accurate. The first step is to determine whether students’ perceptions are distorted. If they are not, then changes need to be made in the en-vironment. These changes must be implemented with input from the student. For example, if a child feels it is too noisy to study at home, ask the child what needs to be done to make it quiet enough. It may be as simple as asking, “What would it take for you do well?” Students must be involved in helping find solutions to the envi-ronmental roadblocks they perceive.

Self-RegulationThe factors of task value, self-efficacy, and environmental perceptions are critical to being motivated. But being mo-tivated may not be sufficient. Students must be engaged in and complete the task. They may feel that math is important, believe that they can do well in mathematics, and like their school and teachers, but they do not follow through and ex-ecute the math assignment. Many gifted students may lack the self-management strategies of time management and study skills. Because gifted students often progress through the early years of school without being challenged, they sometimes fail to de-velop the self-management skills that other students master. In the early grades, good memory and fast processing skills can compensate for note taking and other study skills. Often, educators attempt to teach students study skills before stu-dents need those skills to be successful. This process usually frustrates both the teachers and the students. Self-regulatory skills are more likely to be internalized when they are need-ed to solve the problem at hand. A solution to the problem is to provide gifted students with an academically challenging curriculum early, and throughout their school careers. Another aspect of self-regulation involves setting per-sonal standards. Some students may feel that what they are doing is “good enough.” If students haven’t been academical-ly challenged in the past, they may believe they can achieve satisfactory results with very little effort. Gifted students may also underachieve to hide their need for perfectionism. The third category of self-regulation is self-monitoring. These skills include monitoring distractibility, practicing delayed gratification, and awareness of performance avoid-ance.

t Encourage students to pursue excellence, rather

than perfection. Adults can model acceptance of their mistakes while striving for excellence. Gifted students should not be expected, or expect, to com-plete every task, in every area, with 100% accuracy.

t Help students plan tasks. This serves two functions. First, it develops a mindset that the task is doable. Young people are often reluctant to begin a task be-cause they are unsure how to begin. Second, it mini-mizes the unknown. Through planning, children can visualize a task coming to fruition.

t Help students set realistic expectaions. This in-volves setting goals that are difficult enough to be challenging, yet not so difficult as to be unachievable and discouraging. Learning occurs best when new material cannot be mastered without assistance, but can be mastered with minor direction from someone more knowledgeable (Vygotsky, 1939/1962).

Much that motivates young people is still a mystery. The sug-gestions presented in this article provide insights into some strategies that promote achievement-orientation. Adults can support students and encourage them to pursue their inter-ests and passions. With a little effort, educators and parents can help students to see that what they are doing serves a purpose, to believe they have the skills to perform well, to trust that their environments will encourage their produc-tivity, and to set realistic expectations for themselves. Early encouragement of achievement-oriented behaviors is a ma-jor step toward helping young people lead productive and fulfilling lives.

We are also seeing a huge demand from those people who bought homes in the $1.2-$1.5 Million range, that are now remodeling these homes. This is due to the great value they received on the purchase price of the home, which is justifying this expenditure on the remodeling.

FORECLOSURES, SHORT SALES AND BANK OWNED PROPERTIESFAUN G. HAUPTMAN, The RE/MAX CollectionUnfortunately, the strain of the housing market over the past five years has not yet been entirely corrected. There are still millions of homeowners who are underwater on their mortgages and just as many who are underwater, or not, and have fallen behind on their housing payments. Now that the five largest banks have settled claims with 49 of the 50 State Attorneys General and the Depart-ment of Justice, many in the industry are predicting a resurgence in foreclosure and short sale activity. While the high end of the market has traditionally been exempt from distress, higher inven-tory levels of luxury homes has rendered luxury housing no more immune to the damaging effects of the market than any other price point. Here in Denver, our luxury home market represents a sizable percentage of the overall market. During the first decade of this millennium, the new construction frenzy in the luxury seg-ment meant that, going into the collapse, we had excessive levels of luxury home inventory. The downturn in luxury home prices was more amplified due to a much smaller buyer pool, and it will take some time for prices to recover. Many luxury homeowners will want or need to sell in 2013 and beyond to avoid foreclosure. Selecting a Realtor® with short sale and foreclosure expertise will be critical for these homeowners. e may be landlocked in Colorado, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know the lay of the land. Decorating

styles vary immensely from coast to coast, and Denver, sandwiched between the so-phisticated urban chicness of oh-so-trendy Manhattan and the casual glam lifestyle of Los Angeles, has developed a unique el-egance all its own. Keeping in mind that what looks good in California may look ridiculous in a less trendy venue such as Denver, it’s im-portant to know what works – and what doesn’t – when it comes to home décor. “We need to celebrate our lifestyle here in Denver, rather than try to emulate someone else’s that doesn’t fit,” explains Denver interior designer Eric Mandil, principal of Mandil Inc. It seems there re-ally is a Denver style, and it can be seen everywhere, from multimillion dollar manses to sleek condos. It’s a feeling, it’s a look, it’s …. Denver style. That said, when it comes to putting together a fabulous home, it’s best to fo-cus on what works for you, an aspect that necessarily includes your lifestyle and the effect you want to promote. Ask yourself, are you more the picnick-ing type, or do you prefer elegant dinner parties? Picture your life, and style your home accordingly. Your rooms should be a reflection of your personality -- not an-other person’s whose taste you admire but with whom you have little in common. And that said, maybe you’re the chardon-nay type, and someone else prefers a fine cabernet. Mixing the two is not all that fla-vorful, and can leave a bitter aftertaste. “When you’re looking to develop your style, shed old preconceptions of what is right or wrong, and don’t be afraid to ex-press yourself,” Mandil says. Look at the big picture, which is the overall room, and

pretend it’s like a stage set, where you act as the designer. In the end, it’s not about the big pieces, because the difference is in the details.” These small indulgences, such as an unusual knob on a door, a beautiful an-tique clock or a splashy pillow on a couch, are the details that set a room apart from all others. Maybe you tend toward the look of Old World elegance, but you don’t need to be stuffy or traditional to achieve it. Think of how you could create this style in a hipper way, perhaps by blend-ing urban chic with a gorgeous antique chair. Rooms don’t need to be masculine or feminine, either. But they can exude a strong feeling of romance, or the upper-crust flavor of Park Avenue. It’s all in the details and use of color, and it’s the details that can make or break the room. One important point to consider is that even the most sophisticated rooms do not need to cost a bundle. Stunning effects can be achieved by understanding how to put things together, and stifling any desire to over decorate. “Many people are not sure how to decorate a room that reflects their taste and creates a unique en-vironment, and end up with a room that is overdone or represents a failed attempt to demonstrate wealth. It’s what I call the Ve-gas mentality, where very expensive stuff is thrown together, and the look is tacky and chaotic,” Mandil says. The trend to overdo represents a par-ticular phenomena in this country that has people trying to outdo – or at least keep in step – with the wealthy Joneses. Yet it’s safe to say, your home will be a more beautiful place, if you focus on your needs, your tastes, your desires. Look at room proportions, and decide what best suits your lifestyle and taste. Most impor-tantly, says Mandil, take time to consider how you will look within the space, and

what it says about you. “A very mature person can look much like a clown in the wrong setting,” he explains. “Make sure the space makes you feel good, because the happier you are in that setting, the better it’s going to look. There truly is a feng shui to looking and feeling good within a room.” It’s also important to spend time considering how items in the room will work together, once ev-erything is assembled and placed. This “artfulness of living,” accord-ing to Mandil, doesn’t mean hav-ing the most expensive pieces, but rather having beautiful pieces that tempt the eye. It means shun-ning labels for the sake of acquir-ing a name, and opting for what looks best, almost as though the pieces were designed just for the room. Rooms should be memorable and flavorful, and should be something that you can experience every single day without it becoming stale. “Whether a room is decorated in English, French or Contemporary, if it has good bone structure, it really won’t require a great deal of makeup,” Mandil says. To achieve this effect, look at color place-

ment and fabric texture, and enhance this look with two or three fabulous items that finish the room and make it exciting and unique. “But use common sense as well, and make sure the room works for you. White furniture may look wonder-

ful, but it also sends the message, ‘stay off of me,’” Mandil says. “Any design should be functional and comfort-able, and should work for everyone who will be living in that space.” Keeping the theme of practi-cality in mind, a room should be age appropriate. Some people for exam-ple, look great in a pair of form-fit-ting jeans and sweater, but on others the look is just ridiculous. So consid-
