Thank you for your contributions to the collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD)! Your generous gifts will help CCHD break the cycle of poverty in the United States through better education, improved housing, and economic development. Through CCHD and its beneficiaries, we demonstrate Catholic social teaching and carry out Jesus’ mission to “bring glad tidings to the poor . . . to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Lk 4:18).

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE ABOUT YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH?

PLEASE JOIN US! We begin our 13th week and our topic for the night will be

The Church Led by Deacon Charlie, participants will be discussing the Holy Spirit and Pentecost.

“Jesus founded the Church and gave it his own authority to carry out his mission of calling all people to reconcile with his Father. For the sake of souls, the Holy Spirit guides the Church and protects her from error; so that our faith may have a sure foundation.” If you are currently not Catholic, and would like to inquire about the faith, you are encouraged to attend – there are no commitments to come. RCIA is held from 7-9 pm, Wednesday nights at OLSH. RCIA is a great way to learn more about the faith we were born into!

DEVOTION TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS “To those who show Him love and who make reparation for sins, however, our Lord made a great pledge: "I promise you in the unfathomable mercy of my heart that my omnipotent love will procure the grace of final penitence for all those who receive communion on nine successive first Fridays of the month; they will not die in my disfavor, or without having received the sacraments, since my divine heart will be their sure refuge in the last moments of their life."” St. Margaret M. Alacoque Friday, December 2nd, is First Friday and everyone is invited to OLSH for devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass starts at 6:30pm, followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and devotional prayers. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered during this time. The evening concludes at 8:00pm with prayers of consecration to the Sacred Heart and Benediction.

The Gospel at Home This Week’s Gospel: Matthew 24:37-44

The Church’s three-year cycle of Lectionary readings begins again on the first Sunday of Advent. We start reading from Year A, which is organized around Matthew’s Gospel. The prophet Isaiah’s words are used prominently in Advent. They are read as the First Reading each week, and are quoted by Matthew in the Gospels. We begin the new Church year by hearing Jesus speak of his coming in glory. He cautions us always to be ready for him, and to live each day in the light of God. For Your Family Discussion:

Talk with your child about how you celebrate his or her birthday and relate that to preparing for the birthday of Jesus.

In preparing for Christmas, plan things to do as a family that will help prepare your family’s hearts and home for Christmas. Make sure what you choose to do is realistic.

You can find lots of great Advent Family Activities on the internet – including how to make your own Advent Wreath.

Pray Together:

Plan to have a family Advent wreath. The wreath should have four candles—three purple candles and one pink candle are traditional, but four all white candles will do. During the first week of Advent, light one candle each evening. During the second week, light two; during the third week, light three. If you have colored candles, the third week is for the pink candle. All four candles will be lit on the fourth week. Say a prayer together that shows how you are excited for Jesus’ coming. It can be as simple as: “Come, Lord Jesus, come.”

ON FORMED! FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The tradition of the Advent Wreath is meant to prepare our hearts for Christmas. It represents the long period of time when people lived in spiritual darkness, waiting for the coming of the Messiah, the Light of the world. As a new candle is lit each week, the light grows, overcoming the darkness. Of course, the symbolism doesn’t end there, as Jesus calls us to be the “light of the world” [Matthew 5:14].

Audio: Prepare the Way of the King Dr. Scott Hahn, one of the most eminent Catholic theologians in our country today, reveals what scholars now know about the shepherds, the mysterious Magi, and King Herod. Your Advent journey will take on new meaning as you prepare your heart for the birth of our Lord. This illuminating presentation is sure to help you grow in appreciation of the greatest gift ever given to mankind—Jesus Christ.

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Parish

GIFTS TO THE SICK

AND HOMEBOUND

P a s t o r a l C a r e ministers to the elderly and sick members of our community with dignity and respect,

offering compassion and encouraging a sense of belonging and connection to the Body of Christ through Eucharist and the people of God. Pastoral Care brings Church to people. It brings a sense of connection and belonging to the elderly and sick.

Ladies Sodality makes and delivers small gift baskets during the Christmas season. If you know of a parishioner who is sick, elderly, or homebound, and would like to receive one of these gifts, please contact the parish office at 513-733-4950.

Christmas Gift

OUR LADY OF THE SACRED HEART 2016

CHRISTMAS GIFT TREE

For the 36th year, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart will have a Christmas Sharing Tree to help Fr. Terrance Hoppenjans and the people in Paintsville, Ky. Gifts collected will be delivered to Fr. Terry on December 4th to be distributed in time for Christmas.

The Mission Commission hopes that each parishioner will help bring Christmas to those less fortunate taking one or more ornaments from the tree. Our Parish Christmas Tree will be in the Gathering Space of the Church from November 12th through November 27th.

We ask for your help with the following:

• Purchase the gift (or similar item) on the ornament, wrap it and attach the ornament to the gift

• Mark the back of the ornament with the age, size and sex for whom the gift is intended

• If choosing a game ornament, purchase the game pictured to avoid duplication within families.

• It is NOT necessary to purchase the exact sweater, doll or truck, but we do need something similar.

• USE ONLY ORNAMENTS FROM OUR TREE. These are items that have been requested and are needed.

Please return your gifts to the Church Community Room on December 3th or 4th. We regret that we do not have storage room for gifts brought in early. Any questions, or for more information, please call Janet at 733-4344 or Beth at 931-7872.

OLSH MEN’S CLUB WANTS YOU

The OLSH Men’s Club meeting is on Monday, December 5, 2016, in the lower level of the Parish Center. The doors will be opened by 7:00 PM with the meeting scheduled to begin around 7:30 PM.
