Wildlife Conservation in Africa Today and the LatestInformation on Combating Rhino PoachingOn Thursday, October 22, from 56pm in TNR 120 Mr. LD Van Essen will bepresenting on rhino poaching and their place in the market.
The main role player in wildlife conservation in South Africa, in particular is theprivate sector. Over 70% of all conservation land is privately owned and ismaintained on business principles. Therefore wildlife trade takes place regularly atwildlife auctions and these animals need to be moved all over the country. Privaterhino owners now are becoming less interested in keeping these animals becausethe private security costs exceeds the market value of the rhinos. Between and 2and 3 rhinos are killed every day by poachers and we need to turn this trend aroundbefore it is too late.
LD Van Essen is one of South Africa’s renowned Zoologists. He is a regularcontributor to wildlife, travelling and nature publications and a recognized author ofnumerous publications.
LD was an associate lecturer and researcher at the Centre for Wildlife Managementof the University of Pretoria for many years where he also managed the excitingMPhil (Wildlife Management) program since its introduction. Southern Africanwildlife management in general is benefitting greatly from his expertise andconsultancy.
