Elected Club Positions
Many Lions are reluctant to raise their hand for an elected position
in their club. Oft times the erroneously believe that they are not up
to the job and that the task should be left to a more experienced or
long serving Lion.
What then happens is the old hand continue to bear the brunt of
the club work year after year.
Hopefully, in this club, we have avoided that problem. We have
always encouraged new members to jump into the running of our
club as soon as possible.
Fresh ideas and different approaches to issues are a part of what
new members are about.. We should ensure we use the ideas and
skills that new members bring.
Just because a member has been doing a task or job for (x
amount) of year does not mean a new member or different mem-
ber could not do the task.
What the club asks of member is: To consider what your skills are
and how you could involve yourself in the club organisation.
There is training and mentoring available to any prospective mem-
ber. There are Vice presidents and committee chairman who are
very willing to assist with advice and pass on knowledge.
It is a team event where the whole club will be behind a willing
member.
Additionally our Lions District (201V2) have a group of Lions who
have expert knowledge in all things Lion. The Lions Clubs Interna-
tional website is another tool full of help and knowledge.
However all is wasted unless you, the member, puts up your hand
and says, “I think I would like to have a go at that job”.
Talk to one of the past presidents about your suitability. You may
discover that you view of yourself is under-rated. Where we, the
members, see you as a highly motivated and skilled Lions who is
under-utilised.
All the elected positions are listed on page three (3) of the club
directory.
You may have a long term plan and wish to gain experience on of
the many committees, they are listed on pages five (5) and six (6)
of the club directory.
It does not really matter which path, program or project you
choose. What really matters is that you choose one or more and
get involved. It is all about serving. Serving the club is serving the
community. Our motto is, after all, WE SERVE.
BIORESONANCE THERAPY Bioresonance is a form of energy medicine that has been used in Germany since 1977. Most GP's there have machines in their clinics and employ trained practitioners to treat patients as an adjunct to conven-tional medicine. Bioresonance is a safe non-invasive treatment that uses the body's own electromagnetic frequencies. The machines read exactly WHAT is straining the body. It then inverses this strain, taking pressure off the immune system, thereby enabling the body to heal itself – AS IT WAS ALWAYS INTEND-ED TO DO. A simple analogy: Imagine a truck dumping a huge load of rubbish in the middle of your street. The street is completely blocked and you can't reach the other side. Bioresonance removes the obstacle, allowing unimpeded communication between the cells again, thereby strengthening the body. A few years ago, our twenty millionth chemical was developed. Our bodies were never intended to deal with so much toxicity, hence many illnesses in affluent cultures have not responded to mainstream treat-ments. People are getting sicker and sicker every year because our immune systems have been working overtime trying to detox from all these chemicals. It has been obvious to me for about 35 years that ill-ness has increased at a rate commensurate with the addition of toxic stuff to our foods, toiletries, cleaning and petroleum products, radiation, amalgam, hormones, etc. For example, incidence of childhood asth-ma, allergies, and ADHD have sky rocketed at the same rate that chemicals have been added to the foods kids eat. Germany recognised this connection way back in the mid 1950's at the start of chemical developments. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is the most obvious 21
st Century illness that has been linked
to chemical toxicity and allergies in the body, and no one seems able to cure it. There are multiple Bioresonance Practitioners in Australia. As a rule, most of their clients are those whom mainstream medicine has failed. In other words, Bioresonance tends to be a last resort in people's des-perate search for healing. This is a HUGE topic that I've not done justice to here, so I suggest you Google it.
Lion President Annaisse has her say...
Australia has 56,773 charities, with 50 new charities setting up every week.
Projects
Vision and Diabetes.
These are two projects that our club has taken up for the foreseeable future. Both are a part of the five major pro-
jects occurring world wide with Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Our club has always been involved in
some form or another with Vision. The Helen Keller challenge, in 1927, resonates with our members. Now our club
will be taking our efforts to a new level. A small but very capable committee has been assembled and along with
Lions District 201 V2’s assistance and the high tech equipment recently purchased eye testing will commence in our
region.
The Diabetes project also an LCIF program, will attempt to test thousands of people at risk and hopefully this 1st
world scourge will be slowed. First we will give people an opportunity to fill out a self evaluation form which will
identify their risk. Next high tech testing will be undertaken and if the equipment gives an indication of probability
a referral will be given. Again another very capable committee has been assembled to ensure success.
Both project swill be overseen by the club 1st Vice President and will be coordinated with the
Zone and District Chairman of those projects. Both projects are capable of making remarkable
differences to the quality of thousands of people of the region and their families.
There is one charity for every 422 Australians
This is my last year as a member and President of the Geelong Australia Day
Committee and being involved with your Lions Club. At our May 2019 handover meeting I
will be retiring after 18 years on the Australia Day Committee and 17 years as President of this Committee. Through the contact with your Club and members, I have also been able to improve my skills in many fields for which I am thankful for the support your members, past and pre-sent, have given me. Whenever I need help or advice, there was always someone in Lions with the skills or to offer advice and support I need-ed and for this, I am most thankful.
This year, I notice more new and “younger” Li-ons Members attending and helping on the day and I hope that these are the ones that will con-tinue the service to the community for the Aus-tralia Day Event.
All the best for the future,
Regards,
Ron McVilly
President
Geelong Australia Day Committee
Lions Club of Geelong – Corio Bay
On behalf of the Geelong Australia Day Com-mittee, I would like to thank the Lions Club of Geelong - Corio Bay members and their fami-lies for once again supporting the Children’s Free Fun and Entertainment Day at Rippleside Park on Australia Day 2019. Not only this year, but for most of its 55 years history, your Lions Club members and their families have done an outstanding effort in supporting the planning and conducting of the Australia Day Event where local families and visitors to Geelong have enjoyed the entertainment and activities that was supplied.
The running of a community day such as this relies heavily on your Lions Club and through the careful planning and organizational skills of the late Don Barby and more recently Lion Ralph Patford, we were able to present to the public, that this is an excellent family day to attend on Australia Day each year.
Important Reminders
Meeting nights, let us know in plenty of time how many of you will be coming. Our caterers are great people but they need to know so
that they can ensure our night is successful.
Guests are always welcome. Just let the secretary know how many and there names.
The third Thursday in December first Thursday in January we never meet so the first meeting in January is the 17th. That night we will
need to finalise our roster for the Australia Day event.

with the President and schedule the item at the appropriate time & meeting.

Lions International
Multiple District 201 Papua New Guinea 67th National Convention
The Multi District convention being held in Geelong 4-6 May 2019 is a massive event for local Lions.
This event should be or could be an wonderful opportunity for Lions to publicise what we do. I do not mean getting newspapers and local radio station on board. What I mean is getting all, and I mean ALL, the local Lions to bring people along to the convention. There are, along with the business sessions, exhibitions and display stands from all the areas Lions are involved with both locally and world wide.
Lions Guests and Visitors can talk to Lions experts in a variety of fields. Lions Clubs In-ternational Foundation and Australian Foundation people can answer question and or ex-plain what these foundation do and how.
Lions can bring young people along to hear directly from them how Lions are for the young and what the young can do in Lions and for Lions. The Youth of the Year Quest should be a must see for the young prospect. To say it is inspiring would clearly be an understatement. Representatives from LEO’s club will be able to demonstrate that service to the community come in many forms.
The Lions convention should be, for the Lions of the Greater Geelong re-gion, the best opportunity to recruit like minded people into our organisa-tion. If you plan to go to the convention and fail to invite a friend you have done Lions and yourself a disservice. Additionally you have failed to give members of your community opportunity to see what Lions do.
The projects and programs Lions are involved in, both locally and worldwide, will astound your guests. You see most non-Lions really do not understand the length and breadth of Lions activities.
Most will know about the BBQ’s Lions do to fund raise and the Christmas cakes sales and maybe the Mint sales. Most will not know that each and every Lion is a life saver. Every day programs and projects undertaken by Lions all over the world save lives. Yet rarely do you hear Lions talk, brag, about the lives they save.
Multi District Convention is where we Lions get together and celebrate, plan and consid-er new programs and projects.
Convention is a powerful event for Lions and should be a powerful event for the commu-nity which we Lions serve.
All Lions attending this convention need to ensure that they bring at least one person along to see the exhibition and displays. You may find that you have gained a supporter for Lions or you may have discovered a person who wants to be a Lion in service to their community.

Kindness Matters
Kindness defines who we are as Lions. And why we serve. An act of kindness may be small and personal, or large and profound. When 1.4 million+ men and women come together to serve, it represents a dynamic force for good.
When a poor subsistence farmer in Africa is given tablets to prevent river blindness a great chain of events take place. How-
ever leading up to those tablets being put into the hand of that farmer was another series of, often small, events.
Firstly some individual had the idea of providing those tablets at NO cost. Yet those tablets had to be manufactured, bought
and distributed. All at a cost to someone. Next funds had to be found to pay for the idea. These funds had to be vast and
ongoing. An organisation such as the UN or WHO had to come on-board to assist. Pharmaceutical companies had to be in-
volved and governments had to give permissions.
What happened after the farmer gets the tablets? Life goes on as a subsistence farmer. It may be long and difficult. What
happens if he does NOT get those tablets? Now life gets impossible as river blindness leads to death. The farmer is the main
bread winner and with his death the family has few options. The family may now starve to death. The young males may be
sold off to indentured labour, some as young as 6 years old. The young females may be sold off to the sex market. Death by
AIDS is the common outcome here. The older females continue to work in the fields, 7 days a week dawn to dusk, to feed
what is left of the family. All will die at a relatively young age.
The Lions International Foundation financially supported by Lions everywhere are the difference. You SAVE lives, daily!
Membership. There is always a cost. Lions fees are made up of three (3) com-ponents. International affiliation, District and club administration costs.
Our club dues are currently set at $100 per annum, which is less than $2 per week, remarkably cheap.
The amazing support from District and International with Lions projects and programs make the affiliation fees worth the mon-ey. Hmmm… Less than the cost of 1/2 a cup of good coffee per week.
Notes on club positions
As our club is an incorporate body our elected secretary
becomes the Public Officer for the club.
Lions, wisely, has a system of vice presidents that act as
a sort of apprenticeship for the position of President.
Each Vice President has oversight on a group of projects
or programs of the club.
The club practice has been that the incoming President
has the privilege of asking someone to be their secre-
tary. Though anybody can nominate.
With the exception of the Tail Twister and Lion Tamer,
elected members form the club board of directors.
All club project and program chairman positions are by
exclusive appointment by the President.
If you wish to be a chairman of a project or program in
the Lions year 2019/20 or, continue to be one, you
need to speak to the incoming president after the club
elections and give your reasons why you are right for
the task/job.
Club Elected Positions
Annually the following positions become vacant in our
club and members are asked to consider nominating
for these positions:
President, 1st, 2nd & 3rd Vice Presidents,
Secretary (Public Officer),
Treasurer,
Two Year ordinary directors (3 position),
LCIF Chairman, Membership Chairman,
Tail Twister and Lion Tamer.
Australia Day 2019
Well another successful Australia day Free Children’s Fun Day at Rippleside Park. Thousands turned
up for the event, again. Our club, Corio Bay Lions, has been the project management team for over 40
years. However the Geelong Australia Day committee has been in operation for 56 years.
It is always a difficult task. You have to raise the funds, most of which come via the City of Greater Gee-
long. The project manager, Lion Ralph Patford, then has to make a thousand and one arrangements to
get all the providers of the rides and the children’s entertainment.
The weather plays a big part in the success or failure of the day. The car parking team are a critical
group. Getting the vehicles in and out safely is a tricky and labour hungry task. The vendors are a great
group and are on the same health and safety page as we the organisers are on.
Our project manager, Lion Ralph Patford, is retiring from the task and Lion Peter Rayner will slip ,
seamlessly, into that role. It is a huge task for an individual but our
club is a team and Lion Peter will have a multitude of assistance.
The President of the Geelong Australia Day Committee, Ron
McVilly, will be retiring also after 18 years. effective May 2019. A
replacement has yet to be chosen. As the time moves on I will
have some happy snaps of the event but for now I only have one.

morning of set-up and the official opening ceremony.

Australia Day Committee President, Ron McVilly.
Lion Ralph Patford… This man took on the role of Project Manager of the Australia Day event,
at Rippleside Park, on the death of Lion Don Barby. Lion Don had built a reputation of being a
highly organised and efficient Project Manager. He was liked and respected by all involved in the
event. Lion Ralph therefor had huge shoes to fill.
Well Lion Ralph has successfully filled those shoes. No surprise to me or anyone in our club!
The event has gone from strength to strength under the guidance of Lion Ralph. Each year the
safety requirements and the various rules attached to the council grant, which pay for the vast
majority of the event, get more difficult. Lion Ralph has taken on board those extra requirements
and ensured that the event runs according to those new rules. He did it in his stride. All in our
club recognise that this event is: ‘A WHOLE OF CLUB’ event. Yet without Lion Ralph’s leadership
and calm guidance it could have easily all fallen apart.
Lion Ralph has for health reasons chosen, wisely, to retire from his role. He leaves the role and
the event in a stronger position that when he found it. He will, of course, be available to assist
Lion Peter Rayner who now steps in to Lion Ralph’s shoes.
A job well done Lion Ralph—Thank You!!!

Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition
It is not long now and one of our most important fund-raising events occurs. Lion Les is filling the spaces
on the vast roster. This event is an important event for our region, the state and the country.
For the majority who attend, the public, this is a massive piece of spectacular entertainment. They will
come in their thousands and will briefly stop to pay for their car parking. A few moments for a Lion to be
seen and make an impression.
Our teams need to think about the weather conditions expected. Be Prepared is the scouts motto that
we need to follow. Dress according to the conditions. Expect conditions to change over your shift. Hy-
dration is important. Even if it is not hot and you are out in a cool wind you will still dehydrate. So drink
sufficient water. Wear a wide brimmed hat, suitable shoes. Wear sunscreen. Check on you team mates
then check them again.
So to the members of Corio Bay Lions club this will be the last major fund raiser for the financial year.
We need you, your family and friend to assist on this project. You get to see the Air displays close up
and personal and all with out paying for a ticket. Come join us!!!
It is a worry!
By January 19th 2019 over 30 heat related records had been broken in Australia. The Red Cross Emer-gency Service teams along with all the 1st responder agencies are under a high level of stress due to these heat records being broken.
So far this summer the Red Cross Inner Barwon Region has escaped the worst of the heat waves but this will not always be the case. There will be more to come as February is, traditionally, the worst month for heat.
Great effort goes into preparing for the fire season. The Otway/west coast area is fire prone and we can never prepare enough.
However there is much that can be done to assist the community leading up to and during a heat wave. Get to know who are the neighbours who are the most vulnerable to the effect of severe or extreme heat. The elderly, sick and infirm need to be identified in your neighbourhood. A neighbourhood plan needs to be in place to assist those who will require assistance.
Answers to the following questions, regarding the vulnerable, you might need to ask: Do they have an Air-conditioner? Are they able to keep hydrated? Is there anyone who calls into check on their wellbeing? If the answer to any of those questions is NO! that person could be at high risk during a heat wave.
The last thing we, as neighbours, want to see is an Ambulance come into our street to attend someone who has been affected by a heat wave. By then it is, usually, to late.
At Red Cross, for us, it is all about the people. Hopefully you will think about the people in your street and start a conversation about preparedness. Not just for fires but also about HEAT.
One of the records we do not want to see broken is; the number of people who have died from a heat related cause.
