Dear participants,

Welcome to the British Chamber of Commerce in Denmark’s (BCCD) first 2017 Conference “Harnessing the Power of the Cloud”.

Cloud computing presents a fundamental change in the way we transfer, store and consume data, offering opportunities for government, businesses and private consumers. Everything from spreadsheets to applications requiring massive processing power are moving from PCs and private servers to the cloud. Global revenues generated from public cloud computing services are already significant, almost doubling from $110 billion in 2012 to $200 billion last year.

As the cloud expands, data centres proliferate to cope with the ever-increasing demand for data processing and storage. These data centres are the physical manifestation of a digital revolution which has provided a huge boost to the wider economy and contributed to the creation of a range of high paying jobs across industries.

Consider healthcare, it is an area where cloud computing is making a remarkable difference. The use of digital systems to store and track patient information has increased significantly in the US from one in ten hospitals in 2008 to three in four today, and the cloud computing market in healthcare is expected to grow to $5.4 billion in 2017.

However, it is important to acknowledge that with the good prospects come challenges, ranging from concerns about individual privacy and data centres’ huge energy consumption to future job losses accelerated by cloud-supported automation. Presently, regulators are processing the information and engaging in dialogue with social partners and civil society, working towards a comprehensive and trusted cloud.

I hope you enjoy the Conference.

Yours sincerely

Gareth GarveyCEO, BCCD
