Dear Residents, Families, Team Members, and Friends!
Although the Christmas and New Year’s holidays are now behind us, and the sun has warmed our community a few recent days, we all need to stay mindful that February weather in Arlington County can change quickly. It can be sunny and bright one day, and cold, snowy and icy the next. We want you to know that we are ready for those challenging weather days. We have plenty of ice-melt and equipment to help clean-up, and will be doing our best to keep you safe and warm. Please be careful though and pay particular attention, after a warm-up, melting, and re-freezing, to black ice.
Thankfully, the weather cooperated during January for two important social and community events to be celebrated at the Culpepper Garden community. Culpepper Garden’s Residents’ Association held its annual New Year’s party – featuring the vintage and modern music of Bob Gibson’s Big Band. The 18-piece band inspired residents to tap their feet and dance into the night. Combined with the excellent hors d‘oeuvres served by the Culpepper Garden Dining Services team, a great evening was had by all. Culpepper Garden celebrated the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Instead of taking the holiday off, Culpepper Garden partnered with the wider Arlington community to make it a 'day on'. Many thanks to the numerous residents and citizens who volunteered their time to help make Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day at Culpepper a great community event.
A reminder, as we approach the annual tax season, the IRS warns taxpayers to be on the lookout for unscrupulous tax return preparers, scams and swindlers. According to an IRS press release, over the past few weeks, the organization has seen an inundation of fraudulent claims targeted at the elderly. The IRS reminds seniors to remain alert to aggressive and threatening phone calls by criminals impersonating IRS agents. If you think you are being scammed, contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.
Our community welcomes Robert Amick to the Culpepper Garden staff. Robert is going to work part-time assisting me with various administrative duties, including projects related to the renovation of Culpepper Garden I.
We look forward to celebrating our community in February. This year Culpepper
Garden will celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 12th with a special dinner menu. Dinner will be served during the normal service hours.
Thanks again for choosing Culpepper Garden to be your home, and partnering with us to make this community an exemplary place to live.
Sincerely
Doug Schroeder
From the Director of Property Operations

RECERTIFICATION UPDATE
Greg Rehkopf Marketing and Admissions Manager - Compliance Officer
5
The best answer is – “Immediately following the conclusion of your current year’s Recertification interview.”
As the old saying goes, “Proper planning prevents poor performance.” No one likes to engage in any new or recurring activity without being fully prepared, and knowing what to expect.
Taking a few simple steps now will ensure you are fully prepared to accurately complete the Financial Questionnaire, and actively participate in and contribute to your next Annual Recertification.
• Routinely keep at least one year of monthly statements for each of your financial accounts.
As part of the Recertification process, you will be required to provide:
6 monthly statements for every checking account and all other financial accounts on which you may write checks – and the most recent monthly statement for every savings account, brokerage, and investment account.
By saving the monthly statements for all of your financial accounts for an entire year, you will be ready for any request you may receive from any verification source, including county and state offices offering financial and other assistance.
• Establish a file or a series of files in which to keep copies of the medical bills, not covered by insurance, for which you make payments over the coming year.
The Financial Questionnaire asks for the full names and contact information for the doctors, dentists, optometrists, and other medical practitioners to whom you have paid money, beyond insurance, over the past year. Be sure to include the formal names of the practices your medical providers represent.
Maintain a current list of the account and policy numbers and monthly premiums you pay for Medicare supplemental insurance policies, Medicare prescription drug and dental plans, and life insurance policies.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT– Frank Carey
New Orleans native, former Mexico City and Morocco resident, Masters in Latin American Area Studies from Tulane, four years in military intelligence, interrogator in the Army, budget analyst, local cab driver, plus a generous dose of droll humor are elements of Frank Carey’s life. At age 10, he moved with his family to from New Orleans to Mexico City, where his father worked with the Mexican government, as a consulting engineer. He and his older sister learned Spanish quickly in school, and on the street. At age 15, the family moved to Morocco, where the U.S. was building air bases and his father supervised engineers working on their design and construction. He attended the
New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, for his junior year in high school and completed high school in Morocco. He received his B.A. in Business Administration at Tulane, and later, a Master’s degree in Latin American Area Studies. Frank joined the Army; spent six months on active duty at Fort Jackson, SC; and five and a half years in the Army Reserves - the last four years in military intelligence, training as a P.O.W. Interrogator in Czech and Russian, while attending graduate school. He met his wife, also a graduate student, who worked for the Westinghouse Behavioral Research Institute which was awarded a contract to set up the first Job Corps Center in Washington, DC. The two moved to DC; however, the marriage regrettably ended in divorce a year later.
In New Orleans, Frank worked for the US Customs Service as a Merchandise Examiner estimating duties charged on imports. He became particularly interested in furniture, and learned to distinguish the difference between actual antiques and replicas. He later worked as a program analyst for the Department of the Navy, and then, as a budget analyst for the Department of Agriculture in DC. Frank decided he no longer wanted to punch time clocks and deal with bureaucracies, so he became a cab driver and spent 19 years at Red Top Cab in Arlington, 11 years at Diamond Cabs, and, later became an independent driver in D.C. He had some harrowing experiences, was robbed, and assaulted on several occasions, but, fortunately, never was seriously injured. He came to know the Arlington and DC streets like the back of his hand.
When driving a cab, Frank lived in the Rosslyn area, where he became involved in local politics, and served on the Arlington County Democratic Committee, Wilson Precinct, for six years. He got to know all the elected Democrats in Arlington. In 2007, a county employee encouraged him to move into Culpepper Garden. Later, after often filling in for a resident who showed movies, he took over the job. He enjoys providing this entertainment for residents three times a week. Frank is also a reader for Barrett preschool children, has many friends, and enjoys the good food at Culpepper Garden. All in all, he is a happy camper.

After growing up in Roanoke, Virginia, or “Star City” as they call it, it was a privilege to study Economics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. During my time at the University, I had the opportunity to work at several companies, including an internship at Coordinated Services Management (CSM), an administrative partner of Culpepper Garden. This year, I relocated to the Washington, D.C. area to attend graduate school at Georgetown University, where I am working towards a master’s degree in Real Estate
Development. Recently, I began working with Culpepper Garden as an Administrative Specialist. I will be assisting Doug Schroeder, the Director of Property Operations, with tasks related to the renovation of Culpepper Garden and the relocation of residents. If you have any questions or concerns about the renovations, please do not hesitate to reach out! I look forward to getting to know you all during my time here.
