Remember: Private Fireworks Are Illegal

Be Aware that Teen Drinking Spikes in SummerFor most teens, summer is a chance to relax, spend time with friends, and enjoy time off from school. The Camarillo Police Department reminds residents that summer vacation also provides extra freetime for teens, causing an increase in parties and experimentations with alcohol.

The Police Department aims to provide the highest quality of public safety service. Part of this mission is helping to keep our children safe. We are committed to saving lives by preventing underage drinking. We want to raise awareness of this critical issue by making sure you know about the City’s Social Host Ordinance.

Here’s what you need to keep in mind: Camarillo Municipal Code section 10.32.040 makes it unlawful for any responsible person to conduct, aid, allow, permit, or condone a loud or unruly gathering at a residence orother private property. Under the ordinance, it is not necessary that minors or underage persons be present or that alcohol be contributing factors, though during summer they frequently are. Penalty for a violation of the ordinance is punishable by a fine of up to $2,500.

To report a loud or unruly gathering or underage drinking, please call the Camarillo Police Department at (805) 654-9511.

We want you and your family to enjoy a happy, safe Fourth of July. Laws prohibiting fireworks werepassed because too many people were being injured or killed in fireworks accidents. That’s why weurge you to follow the safety tips below.

• Be aware that fireworks are illegal in all areas served by the Ventura County Fire Department, including the City of Camarillo, except for professionally staged and permitted events.

• Never give fireworks to children—not even sparklers. They can cause severe injury and even death.

• Celebrate safely by attending Camarillo’s family-friendly fireworks event at Adolfo Camarillo High School (details on page 1).

For the safety and enjoyment of us all, Ventura County fire and law enforcement personnel and local citizen patrols will be out on the streets and in county areas during the entire Fourth of July holiday week, seeing that fireworks laws are observed.

For more on this topic, visit www.fire.countyofventura.org or call (805) 389-9710.

Coastal Cleanup Day: Save the Date, Sat., Sept 17, 9 a.m.During last year’s Coastal Cleanup, 32,826 volunteers removed nearly 10,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from 34 miles of Ventura County beaches and inland waterways. In Camarillo, 208 volunteers collected 816 pounds of debris from two sites: the barranca off Mission Oaks Park and Calleguas Creek at Paseo Del Campo and Creekside.

In addition to collecting trash from waterways and beaches, cleanup volunteers also collect data that provides important clues as to the nature and source of the trash. Data collections from past cleanups have shown that over 60 percent of the trash picked up on CoastalCleanup Day probably originated from an inland source—a city, a storm drain, or other noncoastal location—and was washed onto the beach through a creek or river.

Cleaning inland sites like those in Camarillo helps to stop trash where it starts, before it hits our coast and ocean. Why not put Coastal Cleanup Day on your calendar right now? You’ll join hundreds of other caring community residents who donate their time and energy to this worthwhile yearly event. And all year long, always put your trash where it belongs: in the garbage or recycle can. For more information about Coastal Cleanup Day 2016, call theStormwater Division at (805) 383-5629, e-mail James Wihlborg, [email protected], or visit www.vccoastcleanup.org.

“The People Are The City”

Got a Trailer? Be Careful Where You Park It

Stomp Out Cigarette Butts!

Due to problems originating from non-motorized vehicles, the City has developed a solution by adopting an ordinance addressing these types of vehicles on public streets and parkingareas, with certain limited exceptions. The ordinance becomes effective June 28, 2016. Here’s the new parking law:

No person may park a non-motorized vehicle (for example, a trailer) on any street, alley, orpublic property for any period of time except as follows:

• A non-motorized vehicle with a commercial license registration, while the non-motorized vehicle is being loaded with, or unloaded of, any goods, wares, or merchandise from property adjacent to the non-motorized vehicle.

• A non-motorized vehicle required for any lawfully authorized construction, maintenance, or repair to adjacent property for a period less than 24 hours.

• A non-motorized vehicle used solely for recreational purposes, while the non-motorized vehicle is being loaded or unloaded, or otherwise prepared for, its intended recreational use. In no event may such a non-motorized vehicle be parked on a street, alley, or public property for a period greater than 24 hours.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Code Compliance at (805) 383-5660.

We’ve all seen cigarette butts littering our roadways, sidewalks, parks, streams, and beaches. But did you know that stormwater runoff carries this cigarette litter through our drainage system and into our rivers and ocean, causing pollution that harms aquatic life?

Cigarette waste makes up a surprisingly large portion of litter found in our neighborhoods. And though cigarette butts are small, they have a big impact on the environment. Cigarette waste contains toxic chemicals that remain in the ecosystem for many years.

You can help stop cigarette butts from polluting our storm drains and waterways. Just make sure to dispose of them in a designated waste receptacle. Even if you don’t smoke, you can encourage your friends and family members to act wisely on behalf of our waterways. Remember: a clean watershed is a beautiful, healthy watershed.

For additional info on how to help keep our waterways clean, call the City’s Stormwater Program Manager at (805) 383-5659 or visit www.cleanwatershed.org.

It’s Easy to Pay Utility Bills OnlineYou can save time and effort by using the City’s secure online bill-pay service. All you need is your utility account number, a computer with Internet access (at home, at a library, or at a senior center), anactive e-mail address, a personal identification number or PIN (see below), and a credit or debit card.

Each month, a randomly generated PIN will be printed at the top right side of your billing statement justunder your service address. This temporary PIN will continue to be displayed on your bill until you log on and successfully register your own private PIN (password). Once registration is complete, a PIN willno longer show on your statement, so be sure to keep track of your PIN in a safe place.

With this free, secure service you can:

• Make credit or debit card payments using Visa or MasterCard for your water, sewer, and/or trash bills.

• View all your account information: balance, payments, billing history, usage history, and service summary.

It’s easy to get started. Log on to the City’s website at www.cityofcamarillo.org, click on the word “Payments,” then click onUTILITY PAYMENTS and follow the on-screen instructions. For assistance, contact Customer Service at (805) 388-5325.
