What is the Circulatory System What does it do Components

Blood Blood Vessels Heart Putting it all together

Page 3: The Circulatory System

What is the circulatory system?

Network of vessels used as a transportation system in the body with 6 major functions : Transports :

Nutrients Waste Chemical messages

Plays a role in combating and infection Provides a liquid environment for cells Helps regulate the body’s pH level Clotting to prevent loss of body fluids Helps maintain a stable internal body temperature

Page 4: The Circulatory System

What makes up our circulatory system?

Blood Blood Vessels Heart *Lungs

Page 5: The Circulatory System

Open circulatory system vs. Closed circulatory system There are 2 kinds of circulatory systems : The open circulatory system is primarily

found in snails, insects and crustaceans The closed circulatory system is commonly

found in earthworms, squids, octopuses, and vertebrates

Page 6: The Circulatory System

Open Circulatory System

Has a heart (or multiple) but does not have a complete network of blood vessels

Blood is pumped to body cavities where it supplies the cells with oxygen and nutrients directly

The heart contractions pump the blood from one body cavity to the next, and when the heart relaxes blood is drawn back to the heart through pores

Page 7: The Circulatory System

Closed Circulatory System

This type of circulatory system has a closed network of blood vessels

Large blood vessels break off into smaller blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrient carrying blood to all of the body tissues

Functions of Blood

Blood has six major functions : Transporting materials (oxygen, nutrients,

waste) Help maintain internal temperature

(homeostasis) Providing a watery environment for cells Combating disease and infection Regulate body’s pH levels Clotting to prevent los of body fluids

Components of Blood Red Blood Cells or Erythrocytes (45%) White Blood Cells or Leukocytes (less than

1%) Platelets (smallest component of blood – less

than White Blood Cells) Plasma (55%)

Page 11: The Circulatory System

What is blood made of?

Red Blood Cells or Erythrocytes Primary function is to transport oxygen Transport of oxygen is aided by hemoglobin Oxyhemoglobin complex give blood its red

colour, when oxygen is given up, the shape of the Red Blood Cell changes causing a reflection of blue light, this is why our veins appear blue

Red Blood Cells do not have a nucleus, which causes them to have a concave centre

Page 12: The Circulatory System

What is blood made of?

White Blood Cells, or Leukocytes There are two types of leukocytes

Agranulocytes and granulocytes White Blood Cells called Macrophages use

Phagocytosis to destroy invading microbes White Blood Cells do contain a nucleus, which

makes them distinguishable from Red Blood Cells, and Platelets

Allergies

Page 13: The Circulatory System

What is blood made of? Platelets

Are responsible for initiating blood clotting Do not contain a nucleus – like Red Blood Cells Look like 2 plates stacked together

Page 14: The Circulatory System

What is blood made of?

Plasma Provides a liquid environment for the

components of blood Transports hormones Transports vitamins and cholesterol

Leukocytes WBCsMade in the bone marrow and lymph systemContains nucleusPart of the immune systemCombats foreign cells by phagocytosis

Water 90%10% minerals, vitamins, hormones, proteins, nutrients, antibodies, salt, oxygen, carbon dioxide, urea, uric acid and ammonia

Blood

Plasma (55%) the liquid part of blood

Cells (45%)

Platelets – involved in blood clotting

Erythrocytes (RBC)Made in the bone marrowNo nucleusContain haemoglobin which transports oxygenOld RBCs are filtered and destroyed by the spleen.
