The Circulatory System

We need a Circulatory System so that our organs always have blood and oxygen.

The circulatory system is the system responsible for transporting blood throughout

the human body.

The Heart

The Purpose of the Heart

The human heart has four chambers. The two upper chambers are known as the atria, and the two lower chambers are known as the ventricles. The atria contract at the same time. When atria contract, blood is forced into the heart’s lower chambers which are the ventricles.

Both ventricles receive blood from their respective atria. For example the left ventricle receives blood only from the left atrium and vice versa. The ventricles then contract simultaneously to pump blood out of the heart.

The human heart "beats" (or expands and contracts) to pump blood which carries oxygen and important nutrients to all areas of the body and waste away from the body.

The Aorta

The Purpose of the AortaIt receives the blood from the heart and routes it to all the parts of the body. It is the main artery in the human body.

How does the Aorta work

The aorta is the main (and largest) artery of the circulatory system. It carries the blood out of the heart from the left ventricle. The heart pushes the blood through the aorta.

Leukaemia

Leukaemia is cancer that starts in the tissue that forms blood.

What is Leukaemia?

Some symptoms of leukaemia are:•Swollen lymph nodes that usually don't hurt (especially lymph nodes in the neck or armpit)•Fevers or night sweats•Frequent infections•Feeling weak or tired•Bleeding and bruising easily (bleeding gums, purplish patches in the skin, or tiny red spots under the skin)•Swelling or discomfort in the abdomen (from a swollen spleen or liver)•Weight loss for no known reason•Pain in the bones or joints

Symptoms

TreatmentThere are many treatment options for leukaemia. They are:•Watchful Waiting

•Chemotherapy

•Targeted Therapy

•Biological Therapy

•Radiation Therapy

•Stem Cell Transplant

If your spleen is enlarged, you may have surgery to remove it. Sometimes a combination of the treatments is used.

Leukaemia

PreventionMost cases of leukaemia can’t be prevented. We have yet to identify real, known causes and risk factors for leukaemia, so preventing leukaemia is not possible yet.

However, researchers have identified a few risk factors for certain types of leukaemia:

•Cigarette smoking. •Exposure to benzene.

•Previous chemotherapy or radiation treatment.
