News of our Young People: Bibles were presented to Emma Cowing, Tucker Ellis, Porter Hubbard, Eliza McPhee and Joy Wasson on June 2.

Sunday school children presented marigolds to all the people who had helped with youth religious education this year.

Jessie Walker will be competing in the national speech competition sponsored by Modern Woodmen of America. Jessie's speech, which she wrote herself, is on Malala Yousafzai, a teenage Pakistani activist who was shot by the Taliban for advocating the education of girls.

Sunday School: There are still two Sundays open for summer Sunday School teachers: July 7 and July 28. Books and lesson plans are in the Gathering Place. You can also sign up to be an assistant. Thank you to those who have already agreed to teach or help! This summer we will be using children's literature to explore the theme of how to live peaceably with other people through cultivating the virtues of peace, respect, love, joy, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, responsibility, self-control, patience, community, and peaceful conflict resolution to make God's dream of a peaceful world come true. In September, the elementary Sunday School class will be following the Joyful Path curriculum from the Center for Progressive Christianity. "A Joyful Path is a brand new Spiritual Curriculum for Ages 6-10 developed and published by The Center for Progressive Christianity. Inspiring to teachers and children alike, A Joyful Path's sessions celebrate compassion for all, the wisdom within, and a joy- filled life."(from the Living the Questions web site). Like Hide and Seek with God, this curriculum uses stories, reflecting questions and activities to reinforce the message of the lesson. Join us for another exciting year!

News from the Middle School: The CUF Middle School Youth Group congratulates everyone at CUF who helped us reach our goal of walking “around the world”. Together we logged 18,022 miles!! Some of us counted steps, some of us counted miles, some people rode bikes, others swam, but together we were a very active group!! Of course, the other important part of our journey was to see how people who have been struck by natural disasters are moving forward in their lives.

We learned about the devastation in New Orleans, Haiti, Japan, and the New York City area and made donations to the St. Bernard Project, Doctors without Borders, and All Hands Volunteers to support their work in these areas. While we have been saddened by the devastation in these parts of the world, we are inspired by the resiliency of the human spirit, the faith that all of these people have in our 110 words for God, and the compassion of our own CUF family who has supported relief efforts in these places. Thank you all! To celebrate this project, we are asking all of you to walk with us on the last celebratory mile on Sunday, June 9, right after church -- yes, if you need to get coffee or a snack first, please do so. Then, join us as we walk from CUF to Orono High School and back! Feel free to bring balloons, kazoos, harmonicas, or any other celebratory equipment!

The Wayne A. Hamilton, P.E., Civil Engineering Scholarship Recipient My name is Yi Peng. I was born in a conservative village in Ba’nan, Chongqing, China 27 years ago. My families are farmers who rely on one acre of land for living. Because I am a girl and my parents are very poor, I could not continue into high school. From finishing middle school in 2000 in China, to GED graduation in 2010 in America, and then from community college to university, I have experienced so much more than a traditional college student in the U.S. I have never given up my dream of higher education. I met my ex-husband, Brian, at work in Chongqing. He was an ESL teacher. We had our daughter, Emily, in 2006. We came to America in 2009, and settled in his home state-Maine. That September, I started classes at Lawrence Adult Education to learn English and to prepare for the GED. In May 2010, I received my GED diploma and was ranked in the top 25%. From fall 2010 to spring 2012, I studied at Kennebec Valley Community College and worked as a math and science tutor and receptionist later on. During the summer of 2011, I received a full scholarship from the Exploring Transfer Program at Vassar College. It was an intensive residential academic program, where we took two courses over five weeks and read and wrote more than 20 texts. While I was in New York in the Vassar program, my ex-husband served me with divorce papers to show his disapproval of my choice of continuing my education. He hired a lawyer; they filed a protection order against me so that he could retain sole custody of our daughter and prevent my return to our marital home. Even though I had only been in this country for two years, I was determined to finish studying at Vassar, and to work through the legal process with the help from faculty and classmates. When I returned to Maine, I resolved the protection order with the support from my friends in Maine, at Vassar , and the judge. Although the divorce has not been finalized, I have regained shared custody of my daughter and have relocated to Old Town to attend the University of Maine, thanks to my lawyer, Susan, who volunteers for my case. I was prepared for a full load of university-level courses. I participated in the math competition and received third prize in the Calculus II group. As a civil engineering major, I attended the Maine Transportation Conference in December 2012 in Augusta, and assisted instructor Will Manion with the Bridge Contest. I work at the Folger Library; I am a member of the Society of Women Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers. As a reward for one semester of hard work, I received an A for each of my six courses. I would not be where I am without the help from others. The Wayne A. Hamilton, P.E., Civil Engineering Scholarship is a critical financial support for my education at the University of Maine. My goal ultimately is to support others to be successful, using my knowledge as a civil engineer, an instructor, and a translator, as well as a person who has traveled a long, hard road to realize my dream of higher education and a better life.

...from the Commissioned Minister Greetings … belatedly to the moms on our special day in May. Heartfelt greetings to the dads on their special day in June. Thanks Lorna for another beautiful celebration of mothers this year and I'm sure another memorable celebration of fathers. Maine Vets Home... Chapel...We chose the furniture, fabric colors and designs for the comfortable chairs at our latest chapel meeting. The target completion date is June 7th. The latest copies of the outside stained glass windows and the inside creation are on the bulletin board in the Gathering Place. It's exciting to see the chapel come together. It's amazing how far one idea can go. After our Pentecost Service I left for work at the Maine Vets Home. On the Special Care unit, we had a small Pentecost Service and blessed folks with a Holy Spirit made by one of our children who wanted to be blessed. One woman was fascinated by this creation, which I posted it on the bulletin board in her room. During “Volunteers Week”, the numerous volunteers at the Maine Vets Home were treated to a sumptuous dinner. Afterward they were individually acknowledged with a certificate and gift. It was heartwarming to see so many, including service men and women auxiliaries who lovingly give of themselves to residents. Four residents on our Special Care unite passed to spirit in the space of eight days. It was a sad time for us … a privilege and a blessing for me to be present with each resident and to spend time with family members. These are brief reminders of the brevity of life and of our responsibility to do whatever we can for others in the name of Jesus. Volunteers... At the assisted living facility where I volunteer each week, we were recognized at a Tea and given a gift. Last, but certainly not least, are some remarks about my recent move. Of utmost importance is the acknowledgment of four saints who spent hours helping me move from my apartment to our new location. They are Ed, Paul, Randy and my son Nick. Although words can never express our deepest heartfelt gratitude for their help, after it was over, my son stated, “these men are real Christians.” We could never have done this without them. So many boxes to transport with numerous books. Once in our new apartment, it was easier to weed out and give a coat to a woman in my building who told me she had no winter coat but wore a “hoody” this winter. Items were given to Kiwanis and second hand stores...and there's more to go to the second hand store and to Kiwanis. During the move the story of the rich young man's question to Jesus about what he must do to inherit eternal life, frequently came to mind… as did especially Jesus' response, “...go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me...” I heard Jesus talking to me. Too many “things” can easily distract from our call. So immediately after the move I began to pack stuff to give away, and will continue to do so. After all, it's only “stuff!” Have a safe and enjoyable summer. Let's continue to pray for each other. Anne Borreggine Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, Or what's a heaven for? -- Robert Browning
