A merican popular songwriter Tom Jones wrote the song “Try To Remember.” It’s a soothing melody about a man in the December of his life

remembering his youthful September days.

Try to remember the kind of September When life was slow and oh, so mellow Try to remember the kind of September When grass was green and grain was yellow

I have to admit September has always been one of my favorite months and Jones’ description captures its essence. It is a month that many of us connect with our youth and the life rhythm of the end of summer and the beginning of the school year. For me, in my mid-twenties, September took on a melancholy cast because I no longer went to school, but instead went to work and I now worked the whole year. A natural rhythm had been interrupted, something passed away. I was adjusting to the new life pattern. In the adjustment process I found myself going back to my college town on some weekends to see friends who were still in school. Soon I found our life tempos didn’t match and it was then that I began to make the transition from the mellow days of youth to the life of an adult.

Nostalgia for mellow days when the grass was green and the grain was yellow is part of our humanity. It has been said that, “the young have lots of time and few memories, while the elderly have lots of memories and little time.” One of the places we have deep memories about is the church. Some of us remember the time when the life of the church was stable and slow. We remember when our Sunday school departments were filled with graded classes with school like curriculum. Our churches were people gathered to do things. Then the church was a respected institution and the Pastor was a respected community leader. People listened to the Church then. Ah, those mellow stable days of September for the Church!

The days in which we live now are not the warm days and

cool nights of September, but rather, they seem like the worry and uncertainty of an approaching winter storm. Clouds seem to be on the horizon for the Church. Will it survive, is it relevant any longer? Why don’t people go to church anymore? Why don’t we have the respect of the culture?

These days are a time of uncertainty for the Church. That’s why in the month of September, I will preach on the subject of the Church. Does the Bible have anything to say about the days we live in? Does it give us a clue as to what to expect and how to be the Church in our time?

Well, the Bible does give answers to those questions. Jesus Himself was emphatic about her importance, he even gave His personal guarantee that His Church would survive and flourish. The strength of the Church has always been in her call to represent the truth of God even when it challenges deep rooted and accepted cultural practices and beliefs. The Church has always lost ground when she becomes like the culture around her. That is a temptation we should always avoid as the Church. But we need encouragement to keep our faith lively in times of cultural transition and change. We will be encouraged by remembering to whom the church belongs, on what foundation is she built, what the forces that are arrayed against her, and that she will survive and even flourish in times of opposition.

Pray for the Church because she is God’s design to use our efforts to bring about His September Kingdom of spiritual green grass, abundant harvests, and smooth transitions that go from life to life. We can remember the mellow days of the Church in America, but it is better to

never forget the promises given to the people of God.

Your Pastor and Friend,

Doug Brandt

The September Mission of the Month is the Peters Township Food Pantry. The pantry is located at Peace Lutheran Church on Route 19 and services 50 – 65 families each month. The items we would like to collect are personal care items such as toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant and any paper products or laundry detergent. Bags with a list of items will be available in the Narthex the first Sunday of September to fill and return with items purchased. The Food Pantry appreciates all that our church has done to support their efforts.

A Message from Your Visitation Pastor Since June 15, the day I fell, it seems as if the congregation is full of Visitation Ministers. I would like to say, “Thank you” for the care, prayers, kind words, food and flowers that have been sent to me since my fall. Everyone has been so considerate and I want you to know that everything you have done is appreciated. Healing is not complete but things are better each day. The prayers are most important and thank you everyone. God bless you all. Doris

I would like to sincerely thank the congregation for their overwhelming support and encouragement during the ordination process and especially at my ordination service. It was wonderful to see so many of you at the service showing your support for me and my family. I especially want to thank you for an incredibly generous love offering and the many thoughtful cards I received. Your outpouring of love brought great joy to Abbey and me. I am truly blessed to have such a loving church family who prays for me and my family. Thank you so very much for making it such a pleasure to serve as one of your pastors. Eric Toohey Thank you to everyone who prayed for and/or donated money to the Urban Impact Foundation for the Monthly Mission Offering during July! The support I received from Peters Creek Church was an incredible blessing to both me and

the children I worked with.

Thanks,
