A FROSTED PERSIMMON 2007 has been a memorable year thus far! We have had the wettest spring with the most beautiful wild flowers fol- lowed by the mildest summer on record. Now we are having an unseasona- bly warm October; and despite the warm weather, it is autumn season at the Sweet Berry Farm. Patricia took our grand boys over there recently. The fields are stacked high with pumpkins, and the corn is high. Brother Max Copeland, decked out in his red suspenders and red socks, greets people as they arrive. Brother Max and I renewed our acquaintance from years ago. We had a common friend, closer to my age than his, in whose memorial service we both shared in. This friend would tell me from his hospital bed, “Happiness has to do with what happens to you. Joy is something else entirely.” That positive and insightful attitude was like “putting frost on a persimmon” - and it is why both Brother Max and I ad- mired this mutual friend so much. You might recall that an unfrosted persimmon is green and hard and bitter, but let the first hint of autumn frost touch a persimmon, and it turns golden yellow, soft, and sweet. There have been lots of “frosted persim- mons” this year when the touch of Grace has turned the sour taste of the un- expected into the sweet taste of gratitude for God’s goodness. We have sev- eral “frosted persimmons” coming up in the remainder of 2007. This is our 25 th Silver Anniversary Year at the Church in Horse- shoe Bay. In addition to our usual Advent Season we will have an Anniver- sary Banquet, Wednesday evening, December 12. Our special guest will be Pastor Ken Forshee. On Friday night December 14, world renowned harpist, Greg Buchanan, will return to Horseshoe Bay for a Christmas Con- cert. Get these once in a lifetime special events in your calendar now. Just around the corner are the second Men of Faith Breakfast, the annual Fall Picnic, and the WOW Retreat. Gentlemen, you must buy your ticket for the breakfast this Sunday! The Fall Picnic is “come one, come all, and bring a friend or neighbor” next Wednesday evening. There will be hamburgers and hotdogs enough for everyone… and the entertainment is guaranteed to be “a frosted persimmon.” Ladies, you must make your res- ervation for the WOW Retreat November 6-7, before the space is filled. CongregationalCare

CommitteeWhat is Congrega-

tional Care? We see itin the bulletin and thinkit is a good, kind thing, but just what is it? Con-gregational Care is away for individuals toprovide Christian ser-vice and outreach to ourchurch community asthe need arises by pro-viding food, running er-rands, helping withtransportation, visitingthose in need, or help-ing with a reception fol-lowing a memorial ser-vice . This committeealso maintains a run-ning list of specialequipment that is avail-able for loan.

We assign 2 volun-teers for each month ofthe year, and they re-cruit helpers from a listof volunteers who arewilling to provide thevarious services. If youare interested in be-coming involved in Con-grega t iona l Ca re ,please call SahndraCaldwell at 596-7568 orLinda Dupuy at 596-1227. We are updatingour list for next year. Ifyou feel called to helpothers, your time andefforts will be graciouslyappreciated.

CHECK THIS OUTCheck out these great reads from the Church

Library. Here are a couple of reviews from the bookclub on books that we have available in the churchlibrary:Everything you ever wanted to know about ---

Heaven by Randy Alcorn answers more questions than we canthink to ask. If you've thought of heaven as a realm of disembodiedspirits, clouds, and eternal harp strumming, you're in for a wonder-ful surprise. The next time you hear someone say, "We can't beginto imagine what heaven will be like," you'll be able to say, "I can."

Rumors of Another World: What in the World Are We Miss-ing? is available on CD. Perhaps you've heard Johnny White talkof the author and philosopher Phillip Yancey but you haven't gottenaround to reading one of his books. Check out the CD for yournext trip to Houston or Dallas or wherever. Hear what Yancey saysabout our natural world and the supernatural. He discusses thearea between doubt and faith and gives us new perspectives onboth.
