WMU IS A LOT MORE THAN YOUMAY THINK

Missions are for the entire congregation. The mission of God isto reconcile a lost world to Him. We are partners in this missionwhen we carry out Christ’s Great Commission as stated in Matthew28:18-20 “Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in

this way of life, marking them by baptism inthe threefold name: Father, Son and HolySpirit. Then instruct them in the practice ofall I have commanded you. I’ll be with youas you do this, day after day after day, rightup to the end of the age.” (Msg)

Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) providesongoing missions organizations for girls, women, and coed groups, in all age levels. The consistent purpose of these

organizations is to help a believer develop in four key areas ofmission living: 1) praying for and giving to missions, 2) doingmissions, 3) learning about missions, and 4) developing spirituallytoward a missions lifestyle.

Girls in Action (GA) is for girls in grades one through six is leadby Judie Goff. GA’s are actively involved in learning aboutmissions, praying for and giving to missions, and actually doingmissions themselves. Girls also learn and apply Bible verses andbegin to understand the role of missionaries in telling people aboutJesus.

ReflectionsAt last count, we have over 115individuals signed up to serve in somecapacity in the church during thecoming year. We are still working onobtaining individuals as leaders of thedifferent ministry groups. We hope tomake available to the entire church aMinistry Notebook early in November.

The notebook will specify the deacons that serve asfacilitators for each of the ministry areas. It will also havelisted a leader for each individual ministry and theindividuals who have signed up to serve in each area.

The purpose of the notebook will be twofold.First, it will make our congregation aware of the differentministries and who is presently serving on them. Second,it will provide the contact person for each ministry. Thiswill give you someone to call if you know of a need one ofthe ministries can meet, or if you have a question aboutthe ministry. It is our prayer that these ministries will notjust be paper ministries but that we will have theopportunity to see each one of them in service sometimesduring the year.

Another great aspect of this ministry plan is that, except for the ministries under the Ministry ofAdministration, all the ministries remain open throughoutthe year. As new people come into our fellowship, theywill be able to become involved immediately in a ministryof their choice. They will no longer need to wait until nextfall when the nominating committee does its work. Byadapting to this method, the goal of making the slogan,“Where Every Member Is a Minister”, a reality will beaccomplished.

One of the areas of ministry that is already upand running is the Disaster Relief Ministry. We had a groupthat went to Florida after hurricane Charlie. The teamwas also on call following the other hurricanes. However, the second call did not come. We also had twelve peoplefrom our church to take the Disaster Training in October.

Closely related to Disaster Relief Ministry is theRebuild Unit Ministry. This ministry will be available to gointo areas that have suffered damage and to assist in therebuilding process. It can also be used locally to doprojects for those who are in serious need. You may havenoticed the new trailer in the back of the church. It wasmade possible by funds from our church and a $1000.00donation from the Men’s Department of the SCBC. It willbe used to carry the necessary tools when the unit goesout to do its work. In the near future you will be asked tohelp stock the trailer with the needed tools to accomplishits purpose. Sunday school classes and other groups maywant to go together to contribute some of the moreexpensive items that will be needed. When the opportunityto give comes, give generously to this endeavor. It willprovide mission opportunities for years to come.

Even as I write, a group of our ladies are meetingin the adjacent room to help organize a greatercoordination of the different ladies ministries in the church.Their goal is to bring together all the different ministriesdirected to women for the purpose of enhancing theministry opportunities made available through our churchto the ladies of our church and community, while they

continue to promote and support mission effortslocally, nationally and internationally.

As much as I would like to do it, time andspace does not permit me to mention all the ministriesby name at this time. However, one of our goals forthe coming year is to do a better job of highlightingtheir work. You can help by notifying the office orme about projects and ministry that you have done.We would also welcome any photos that you maytake of your work. Janis Lindsey has agreed to helpus put together a photo album for next year’s ministryfair. If her efforts are to be successful, you will haveto assist her with the pictures. The purpose of thisrecognition is to encourage others to becomeinvolved.

Although there is not space to mention eachministry by name in this issue, you need to know thatI am thankful for your willingness to serve. As wecontinue to serve together, we can make McCormickFirst Baptist a lighthouse in the community. Thanksfor your participation.

MAJESTYMAJESTYMAJESTYMAJESTYMAJESTY

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth (Psalm 8:1)

There are many attributes of the Lord that should prompt our response of adoration and worship: His Holiness; HisPower; His Love…..the popular contemporary song by the Rev. Jack Hayford, Pastor of The Church of the Way inVan Nuys, California, teaches that the real majesty of Christ deserves our praise.

Pastor Hayford relates the following account for the writing of “Majesty”:

“In 1977, my wife Anna and I spent our vacation in Great Britain. It was the same year asQueen Elizabeth’s 25th Anniversary of her coronation, and symbols of royalty were abundantlypresent beyond the usual. As Anna and I drove along together, at once the opening lyricsand melody of “Majesty” simply came to my heart, I seemed to feel something new of what itmeant to be His– to be raised to a partnership with Him in His throne. Upon returning to ourhome in California, I was finally able to complete the song.”

While viewing many of the ancient castles of Great Britain, Pastor Hayford began to reflect on the fact that theprovisions of Christ for the believer not only include our forgiveness of sins but provide a restoration to a royalrelationship with God as sons and daughters born into the Heavenly family through His majesty.

SOMEONE YOU SHOULD KNOW by Noreen Eichem

Ken and Helen Thornton retired to South Carolinain June 1987 from Cincinnati, Ohio. They rented fora year in McCormick while their house was beingbuilt in SLV. In his own words Ken will tell you he“failed retirement.” I remember a few years backwhen he was the driving force in getting volunteersto landscape Bill Wilson’s yard when he was so sick.He has worked on many yards since that timewhether volunteering or in business. The Thornton’slove to travel whether seeing new places or visitingfamily, they have been in most of the 50 states.

Helen can be described as a Mary/Martha person. She loves her Bible study and sewing , or workingwith two year olds in Sunday Sschool, and singingin the Choir. You also see her working as a KitchenAngel and in the Martha Ministry. She was saved ina small country church during revival meetings whenshe was 12. Ken was saved after he met Helen. Hespent time with the pastor in Wyoming on visitationand at church conferences. He was also ordainedas a deacon and served in that capacity for over 20years. Ken is a member of our Disaster Relief Team.

The Thorntons have two children and twograndchildren. They all l ive close enough(Greenville, SC and Birmingham, AL) for the

Thorntons to stay in touch. The Thorntons have beenpart of our fellowship for over seven years and haveblessed us abundantly with their servant attitude andwinning smiles. Make sure they are among youracquaintances.

The Knock at his heartAs a doctor examined a 4-year-old boy, hethought it would be interesting to let thelad listen to the beating of his own heart. With the listening device in his ears and theprobe on his heart, the boy was asked,“What do you hear?”

The boy, who attended Sunday schoolregularly, responded, “Is that Jesus knock-ing?”
