MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN AND WARDENS In Solidarity

In light of recent bomb threats to Jewish community centers, Hebrew schools, and synagogues, and vandalism of Jewish headstones across the United States, the following letter was sent to Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel voicing the support, concern, and solidarity of our congregation: February 27, 2017

Dear Members of Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel,

It is with sadness and distress that we’ve learned of the recent rash of vandalism and threats to synagogues and

Jewish community centers across the United States. We are writing to express our absolute solidarity with, as well

as support of your congregation, and all members of the Jewish community.

The people of St. Michael’s Cathedral and Ahavath Beth Israel have enjoyed a rich relationship for more than one

hundred years in Boise. As Christians and Jews we share many similar values, perhaps none more important than

the issues of religious freedom and justice for all people.

We wish to reaffirm to you the support and friendship that has been a hallmark of our historic relationship. Indeed,

perhaps more than any time in the recent past, we understand how important it is for all people of authentic faith

and good will to speak, with one voice, against those who seek to cause harm, regardless how we express our faith.

We are pleased that no harm has actually come to you, our respected neighbors. During this time of anxiety and

fear however, we hope you will feel free to call upon us for friendship and support.

It is in times like these that we know the importance of declaring that when one of us is hurt or threatened, all of us

experience that hurt or threat together.

Please be assured that this comes with our compassion, concern, and solidarity.

Faithfully,

Holy Baptism is full initiation by water and the Holy Spirit into Christ’s Body, the Church. It is a public statement of one’s intentional decision to follow the way of Jesus. At St. Michael’s Cathedral baptisms are scheduled four times each year at our regular Saturday or Sunday services. The Episcopal Church encourages us to hold baptisms on four major feasts when they are most appropriate. These feasts are All Saint’s, Baptism of Our Lord, Easter Vigil, and Pentecost. Call Cathedral Administrator Debbi Mills-Havey at 342-5601 for additional information.

Come to the St. Michael’s Children’s Book Fair! Attention all young readers, parents and grandparents! St. Michael’s is hosting a children’s book fair March 12 – 26 in the Bishop Tuttle House parish hall. We will have books and DVDs on display on Sunday mornings and at Wednesday evening Cathedral Nights for you to order.

All the items come from Sparkhouse, the publisher we use for our Breakfast Bunch 6th – 8th grade class curriculum. Some of the titles focus on Easter, such as The Holy Moly Easter Story available on DVD or in book form for 4 – 8 year olds. They all bring fun to children’s Christian formation! Again, anything you order at the fair will have a discount up to 50% with free shipping. And one of our families could win $200 in cash! Armstrong takes us through the evolution of civilization and conflict from the beginnings of agriculture around the world to modern times, suggesting a certain inevitability between the two. Classes will cover an introduction to concepts and premises of the book with some ancient examples, and the sections of the book: Beginnings, Keeping the Peace, and Modernity. The final class will cover Armstrong's conclusions. The format will be part presentation, part discussion in each class. Led by Lynne Tolk.

Psalms of Lamentation

Ever since the Sunday homily of 2/18/17 on the theme of loving the “enemy,” parishioners have been asking some of us clergy where they can locate those Psalms of Lamentation which describe various forms of “enemy-like” experiences, and how to process them through prayer. The following Psalms are commonly classified as laments: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 17, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 31, 35, 38, 39, 41, 42, 43, 51, 54, 55, 56, 57, 59, 61, 63, 64, 69, 70, 71, 77, 86, 88, 102, 109, 120, 130, 140, 141, 142, and 143. The enemy-like experiences are typically: being pursued (7:1), persecuted (31:15), being fought against (35:1), suffering accusation (71:13), people seeking to hurt others (71:13), experiencing the evil plots of people (35:4), experiencing derision (102:8), evildoers (27:2, 140:1, 6:8, 59:5, 55:2), experiencing suffering from the mighty, the arrogant, and insolent (59:3, 86:14, 140:5), ruthlessness (54:3), cruelty and injustice (71:4), experiencing false witness (27:12), violence (140:1), deceitfulness (43:1), and ungodliness (43:1). These Psalms also typically involve a movement from calling upon God, to describing the experience giving rise to the lament, to appealing for help, to striving to think through the appropriateness of one’s complaint (seeking to avoid unjustified complaining), to expressions of trust that God will help, and finally to thanksgiving and praise for divine help. Taken as a whole, these psalms may give us a fair picture of what Jesus meant by the “enemy” we are called to love. (A fine source I have consulted and relied upon is: Willem S. Prinsloo’s article, “The Psalms,” in Eerdman’s Commentary on the Bible, ed. J. D. G. Dunn and J. W. Rogerson, 2003, 364-436, esp. 367-73. A highly recommended one volume Bible commentary!!). Do not hesitate to contact me if you have further insights and/or questions. Fr. Bill Thompson-Uberuaga ([email protected])

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Stations of the Cross, or the Way of the Cross, refers to a series of images of Jesus Christ on the day of his crucifixion, with accompanying prayers. At St. Michael’s, the Stations of the Cross are small paintings lovingly created by artist Rena Vandewater, which are displayed in the Cathedral. The focus of the Way of the Cross is to help us make a spiritual pilgrimage through the contemplation of the Passion of Christ. Every Wednesday at 5 PM during Lent, Christine Merritt will lead a contemplative walk through the Stations of the Cross. Please join us in the Cathedral.

THE SPIRITUALITY OF HOLY WEEK

A MORNING OF REFLECTION

SATURDAY, APRIL 8th, 9 AM - 12 PM Tuttle House classroom T6

Offered by

FR. BILL AND DR. PAT THOMPSON-UBERUAGA

The Lenten season and liturgies reach their culmination with the three great holy days of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday, which are collectively known as the Triduum, or the “Three Days,” extending

from Thursday evening through Easter Day. They form one great and continuous liturgy. That is why there is no dismissal at liturgy until the first Easter Eucharist at the end of the Holy Saturday Easter Vigil. This great celebration marks the “passing over” (paschal journey) of Christ to new life, and incorporated into him,

of our own passings over. We can hear the echoes of the Passover Feast, described in the Jewish Mishnah as a time when we are called to “regard [ourselves] as if [we] were brought out from Egypt … [hymning] the one who has … led us out of slavery and into freedom, out of sorrow to joy, out of mourning to a day of festival, out of darkness to light …” If during Lent we go through a kind of “bright sadness,” during which our hearts are softened so that they may be opened to the Spirit, paraphrasing Fr. Alexander Schmemann’s words, in Holy Week we dwell with a concentrated focus upon how the brightness of Christ is at work in our lives, transforming our wounds into sacred wounds, strengthening us in our challenges and disappointments, and confirming us in our inclinations to act justly and to love. Please come and join us for a morning of contemplative reflection upon the Triduum. What is the message for our spiritual journeys waiting for us in each of these great holy days? How might we prepare ourselves to enter as deeply and meaningfully as possible into this liturgical culmination of our Lenten experience? We will seek, through periods of prayer together; through periods of silent, gently contemplative reflection; and through brief presentations and dialogue, to remember once again why the cross and resurrection is our one and principal Christian Feast.

Participants are invited to Second Saturday Lunch in Tuttle at noon for a donation of $6.50. Please register for

this morning event with Debbi Mills-Havey at [email protected], or 342-5601, by April 1, 2017.

Music Ministry – Update - Canon for Music Search

The search for a permanent Canon for Music has begun. Dean Demarest asked several choir members from the Chamber and Cathedral choirs to participate on the team, and two of them are also Vestry members. The committee has already met to outline the process that will be followed in the coming weeks and months to seek qualified applicants, conduct interviews, and ultimately hire a permanent Canon for Music. -Patty Foss-Cameron, Chair of Canon for Music Search Committee

Newcomers Reception Update

On February 17th we enjoyed a delightful Newcomers evening at St. Michael’s! Starting our event was music from the Silver Brass. They kept us tapping our toes while yummy finger food and great conversation was had by all. There were 38 in attendance of which 22 were new! Dean Rich showed us an informative video about St. Michael's and answered questions. We gathered around tables to converse with our guests, who quickly became our new friends! Our evening closed with a circle of prayer. Each guest was given a card with Cathedral information and wildflower seeds so we can all "grow together."

I want to thank the Silver Brass for playing at such a short notice. Also to Melissa, Barb, Susan, David, Chas and Torene, Art and Ray for helping to set up, donate food and make our new friends feel welcome. Thank you to Ellen for getting flower donations, and the ECW for the pretty tablecloths and flower vases. Thank you to Gary for providing childcare and Mike for setting up the tables. Thank you to Dean Rich, Canon Emily and Father Bill for supporting this event and spreading God's love. To God be the glory! ~ Corrine Bush, Vestry, Membership Chair

Praying for the Legislature Believing in the power of prayer and following the practice of supporting people in their highest calling as outlined in “Engaging the Powers”, by Walter Wink, we sent a letter to members of the Legislature thanking them for their service to the State of Idaho and all the communities they serve.

We invited them to pray with us on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings when the cathedral is open to the public. They may also write their prayer requests in our Book of Biddings or call the church office with their requests. We will be praying from the Book of Common Prayer beginning on page 840 with #18 through 39. Any one or all of these prayers may be included in our prayer times. We will pray from January to June.

In addition, we will commit to attending sessions of the Legislature for the purpose of praying during their deliberations; praying that their decisions will be guided by wisdom and with a sense of social justice and a will for peace in our community. It is our hope that you will want to join in this effort by designating what morning of the week you can join the community in prayer. For more information contact Christine Merritt at 425-343-8749 or [email protected]
