A Field Trip to the World Chess Hall of Fame Article and Photos by Patrice Connelly Last month I had the opportunity to visit the recently opened World Chess Hall of Fame. The WCHOF moved from Miami, Florida, to Saint Louis, Missouri, where it reopened in an historic house. The three-story building features two rotating exhibits in addition to the permanent Hall of Fame. The building is located in the West End, conveniently located from many restaurants, and across the street from the famous Saint Louis Chess Club, which always has a few local players happy to share a game! The Hall of Fame exhibit has improved greatly in his new location. Though the space is not overly large, the artifacts on display don’t compete with one another for room. Memorabilia, original correspondence, boards, and even an engraved silver set (awarded to Paul Morphy) are available for viewing. The walls are lined with the plaques of inductees in the World Chess Hall of Fame, as well as the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame. Viewers will recognize familiar players such as Bobby Fischer and Paul Morphy included in both! 1972 World Chess Championship Admission ticket and signed chessboard

by Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky The two rotating exhibitions can be enjoyed by devoted students of the game, as well as causal players and art appreciators alike. Currently on display through February 12th, 2012 is “Out of the Box: Artists Play Chess,” an exhibit featuring contemporary works with formal and contextual interpretations of the game. The exhibit’s title not only plays on the idea of a “boxed” chess set, but may also reference the traditional art gallery itself, sometimes referred to as a “white box.” This is especially appropriate as the works themselves extended beyond the gallery walls (and boards!), as many include performance aspects performed elsewhere. The variety of media includes sculpture, installation, video, and mixed media. (Noticeably absent are more traditional mediums such as painting and drawing; which in no way detract from the exhibit.) The exhibit is curated by Dr. Bradley Bailey, assistant professor of modern and contemporary art history at Saint Louis University and coauthor of the book Marcel Duchamp: The Art of Chess. Some of the artworks comment on the competitive, aggressive aspect of the game of chess. Barbara Kruger’s Untitled (Do you feel comfortable losing?), 2006, features a black and red set that incorporates sound. When a piece is moved, a player might hear a mundane phrase like “What time is it?” or a more confrontational statement like “you scare me.” The pieces’ sharp edges and a screaming face depicted on the board reinforce the volatile emotions experienced by players during a game.

Barbara Kruger, Untitled (Do you feel comfortable losing?), 2006. Directly addressing the war-like aspect of the game is Liliya Lifánova’s Anatomy is Destiny, The Wardrobe: Game in Waiting, 2009. Lifánova created a “live” game of chess, featuring a life-side board, and performers dressed as pieces. The piece has a Chicago connection- the live “game” was performed at the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Chicago, September 11, 2009. On display at the gallery are the costumes, designed to the specifically restrict actors’ movements to further emulate chess pieces- knights must jump, pawns are forced to glide rather than step. These are displayed over a life-size board, upon which viewers are invited to walk. A nearby monitor plays a recording of the original performance- watching the “pieces” dressed in costume (complete with war paint make-up) capture and strike down one another emphasizes the hostility of the game.

Some artists chose to represent he calmer, contemplative side of the game. Yoko Ono reincarnates her original 1966 White Chess Set in a 2002 piece. Play it by Trust includes an all-white chess set inlaid in a white table flanked by two white chairs. There is literally no difference represented between the two imaginary opponents, who would need to rely wholly on their own abilities to identify their pieces. Tom Friedman’s chess set in Untitled, 2005, challenges the identification of pieces a step further. In his whimsical set no pieces are alike, and the quotidian objects- such as a paper tube and a melted lollipop- include a can of Busch beer, a wink to his strong connections to the city of Saint Louis.

Left, Gavin Turk, The Mechanical Turk, 2008. Right, Tom Friedman, Untitled, 2005 Guido van der Werve’s chess “piano” provides a direct comparison between the art of the game and musicality. The artist used his device to create a score for a short film, from which stills are displayed with the corresponding chess positions. But perhaps chess enthusiasts will most enjoy the references in Gavin Turk’s The Mechanical Turk. Turk, who has portrayed himself as many famous characters, including Andy Warhol and Sid Vicious, performs as the mechanical Turk, the famous 18th century “automaton” created by Wolfgang von Kempelen. This mechanical marvel was advertised as fabulous device that beat the most skilled of opponents, but was in fact a machine operated by a hidden chess master. Gavin Turk creates his own illusion in his film; costumed as the Turk, the artist performs the knight’s tour, a popular chess puzzle that requires the player to move a knight to occupy every square of the chessboard exactly once. The artist mimics mechanical movements, and appears to automatically move the knight to the correct squares while never taking his “eyes” away from the viewer in a seemingly uncut film. How does he do it? You can see the whole film here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQ3uDZA2Dos. The second exhibition (also on display through February 12th), Chess Masterpieces, features highlights from the private collection of Dr. George and Vivian Dean. The selected sets date from the 16th to 20th centuries, with some individual pieces dating from 700-900 CE. The sets represent a wide range of materials, most luxurious- silver and gold, precious gems, mother of pearl, porcelain, and ivory, a prized material. As the game originated in Persia, and spread to the West, the sets are from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Rivaling the extensive variety of materials is the imagery of the chess pieces. A queen is carved in the likeness of Catherine the Great, a knight from another set is a personage from King Arthur’s court. Many sets are influenced by the natural world; the pieces take on the forms of animals, insects, or incorporate floral-like designs. For this exhibition, most sets are depicted in a position taken from an actual game. Though some chess players may recognize the games, for other viewers the accompanying text of each set includes a diagram of the position, and the information about the game from which it was taken. These positions reinforce that these sets were not only created to be admired, but for actual playing as well.

Left: Ball-in-Ball Style Set, China, 1800s, natural and stained Ivory with Lacquer work folding board. Right: Early Meissen Set and Tray Board, Germany, 1740, Glazed porcelain Most intriguing are the “armies” facing one another. Though some sets feature abstract designs, others present representational creatures and characters. Age-old themes such as good versus evil (complete with angels and demons!) are on display, while other sets suggest countries, genders, and even ideologies face off against one another. A Soviet Propaganda set from early 20th century Russia features a set of black pieces representing Capitalism, and red pieces representing Communism. The red king is a hammer-wielding blacksmith, who needs no crown; his nemesis is a death’s head adorned in furs, guarded by bishops portrayed as Romanoff Dynasty Imperial Guards, another symbol of oppression. Left: Soviet Propoganda Set, Russia, 1923, Porcelain; Right: Detail The World Chess Hall of Fame is off to a strong start in its new home, and is another great Midwest resource for chess players and enthusiasts. If you’re traveling in the Saint Louis area, try to fit a quick trip in your schedule!
