Conductor Nic Fallowfield Leader Jon Barwell 2015/16 Nic Fallowfield leads a varied life as conductor, violinist and teacher. He has been co-leader of the English String Orchestra, co-principal 1st violin of the Northern Sinfonia, and is currently co-leader of Sinfonia Viva. Playing has taken him on tour throughout Europe, North and South America, and Japan, and he has recorded extensively for radio, television and commercially. Nic is a well-respected and sought-after teacher, both at Birmingham Conservatoire and privately, and is also in demand as an experienced chamber music coach. A conducting pupil of George Hurst, Nic was invited to make his professional debut with a series of concerts in Finland in 1991, since when he has conducted in France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Romania and Greece. He was conductor of the Hereford String Orchestra from 1991 to 2006 and is currently Musical Director of the Beauchamp Sinfonietta in Warwickshire. Nic was appointed conductor of The Charnwood Orchestra in 1997. Founded by Joseph O’Reilly, Director of Music at Rawlins College in Quorn, the Charnwood Orchestra was originally known as the Quorn Orchestra. The Orchestra is now based at Humphrey Perkins School in the neighbouring village of Barrow upon Soar and performs a wide variety of repertoire, working with soloists of the highest calibre. Each season the Orchestra usually gives five concerts at venues around Leicestershire and has undertaken a number of successful tours to France, Ireland, Scotland, north east England and, most recently, Dorset. The 2015-16 season opens in Barrow upon Soar with Wagner’s beautiful “Siegfried Idyll”. Simon Smith joins us to perform both Mozart’s last violin concerto and the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres” in the version for violin, strings and percussion. November’s concert features three of Dvorák’s overtures and the brilliant Katya Apekisheva returns to perform Brahms’ magnificent first piano concerto. January sees our now traditional exploration of the delights of the popular Viennese repertoire – as always, a mixture of old favourites and new discoveries for audience and players alike! In March we welcome back another great friend of the Orchestra, Thomas Bowes, to perform Benjamin Britten's violin concerto. Also on the programme is Tchaikovsky’s second symphony, nicknamed the “Little Russian” because of the composer’s use of Ukrainian folk songs in three of its movements. The season ends in spectacular style with a concert of twentieth-century English music. The first half features three of Vaughan Williams most popular works, including his tuba concerto played by the young Leicestershire musician Stephen Calow – no stranger to the Orchestra, but his first time performing with us as a soloist. The concert ends with Holst’s monumental orchestral suite “The Planets”. Conductor Nic Fallowfield Concert Season The Charnwood Orchestra Concert Season 2015/16 Concert Season 2015/16
