POTENTATE’SMESSAGE

It is now April and a quarter of the year isgone. Time really flies when you are having fun.

I’d like to thank everyone that came out tothe Potentate’s Ball last month. It was veryheartwarming to see the support that Andreaand I have from so many of you. Thank you.

I’ve been asked many times about myPotentate’s pin and what does the hummingbird

signify. Well, the pin itself is based off my Dad’s pin, Ill. Sir Joe “OlCoach” Cole, from 1994. I took his design, made it a little bigger to addthe 125 years in west Texas to show that Ben Hur is 125 years old thisyear. I added the hummingbird in the panhandle to represent Mom,Starr H. Cole. She loved hummingbirds and the Shrine. I also changedthe color of the circle from teal green to the berry purple. It was a wayto remember them for all they have done for me.

We had a blast at the Texas Independence Day parade. The weatherwas a little sloppy; yet the ones that came out had a great time. I’d liketo thank Jim McConnell for providing hot wraps and drinks afterwards.

We have three parades in April, starting with Burnet on the 8th,Smithville on the 22nd and Georgetown on the 29th. Ben Hur will providefood and drink after the Burnet parade. Noble Ed Allen and his LadyVictoria have invited us to their building in downtown Smithville for foodand refreshment following this fun parade – last year this was the placeto be! As for Georgetown, my Lady Andrea and I welcome all attendingto our house for food and refreshments afterwards.

Speaking of parades, you are encouraged to attend. You can ride thefloat, sit along the street, ride a motorcycle or even bring your own carand participate in the parade. These parades are Ben Hur’s calling card. People who see us having fun might be curious enough to ask how tojoin. It also brings good will to the small communities that we visit; sothe more participation from Ben Hur, the better.

Who is ready for the Kentucky Derby? Men: do you have your dappersuit and hat? Ladies: do you have your fancy dress and big hat? Do youknow which horse you are going to bet on? There are games of chanceto participate in with 100% payouts! Bring your cash for bingo, poker, and pick-your-horse to win. Well, the party is on May 6th, beginning at3:00 p.m. with post time at 5:24 p.m. and only $10 per person at theback door. As always, we will have food and refreshments. Come outand have FUN! This daytime event is open to your family and friends.

TSA will be in Waco on June 14th – 18th; so start making plans now toattend. This is always a great event and even better with competitionbetween Temples. Ben Hur will be staying Saturday night after theawards ceremony and having a mini celebratory party at the hotel pool. Food and drink will be provided. Come join us in Waco. Details to beannounced as they become available.

God Bless the USA, our service men and women and God Bless thisgreat fraternity of ours, Ben Hur Shrine.

Fraternally,

Brad ColeBrad ColePotentate

I was reading an article the other day and foundit quite interesting. It talked about a man namedGene Wolfe, who was given the task of compressinga baked potato to fit in a tennis ball can. The articlegoes on to say how, by meeting that challenge Wolfegave the world PRINGLES…..those stackable snackchips. Today these canned chips are sold in 140countries and generates sales of $1.4 billion per year. All because Wolfe gave the task his all and delivered. Amazing - right! Now, I am not much of a junk foodguy but I love hearing these stories. They remind meof what’s possible for any man or woman if they willjust put their mind to it and meet the challenge. Itjust goes to show you that meeting people, collaborating, and kicking ideas around plays a hugepart in our success.

You just never know who you will meet or wherea conversation might take you. Now if we appliedthis to the ideas and goals we have for our Temple, what would happen?

High Priest and Prophet

Nobles and Ladies,I hope you were able to make

it to the Ball, we had a BLAST! You probably thought I was goingto say we had a ball but I’ll leavethe cheesy jokes to our HighPriest and Prophet, well, most ofthem. One thing that alwaysseems to re-energize me is seeinghow much fun we can have whenwe put our mind to it. With thatthought in mind I have a question

for you. What would you like to participate in at BenHur?

We only have a small percentage of our membershipthat actually comes out to participate in things. If youare someone who does not come out on a regular basisI want to know what would get you to come out. Isthere a hobby you would like to see a Unit or Clubcreated around? Would you like to just come out andhave a beer or a cup of coffee with a few people? Wouldyou like to join a group we currently have? Ben HurShrine is here for YOU, but, if we are going to remain aviable organization we need YOU to participate. I wouldlove to hear your thoughts and ideas. You can call me at512-567-6920 or email me at [email protected]

With this idea in mind I have gathered information onstarting a Home Brew Unit. Several Nobles expressed aninterest in brewing or making wine so I got to worktrying to help build a good foundation for them to launchfrom. Interest is growing but we still need some peoplewho are willing to step up as officers. The cool thing iswe can make this what we want. We can join the TSAHome Brew Association and compete or we can justmake it a club and do as we wish.

Again, if you have any thoughts or recommendationson things YOU would like to participate in please let meknow. I want YOU to enjoy YOUR Shrine!

Sincerely and Fraternally,Paul PenningtonPaul PenningtonOriental Guide

FROM THERECORDERS

DESKNobles,I recently attended the

Recorders Seminar in SanDiego and I want to share afew things from that seminar. Non-Shriners can now

participate with Shrinersin Civic Parades but theymust be identified as non-Shriners. They maywear the same uniforms as a Unit or Club butthey cannot wear a fez. They may wear a capor a hat or no head covering at all, somethingthat will let the public know they are not aShriner.

Women may now drive a registered vehiclewith the Shriners in a Civic Parade. Example,an antique car owned by a Shriner may bedriven by his lady or some other non-Shriner.

Non-Shriners, including women, may belong tothe Transporters Club and may drive. Here-to-fore they could only ride shot-gun.

Shriners International really wants the mail outmembership cards that were mailed to youreturned with your corrected information or acall made by you to the promoter. They aretrying to clean up the membership data baseand add hobbies, pictures, etc. to themembership book that they are puttingtogether. The estimated proceeds from thesale of the book is $100,000 which goesdirectly into the Per Capita account each of usmust pay each year. There is no obligation topurchase the book.
