    Success Story: Orlando

    John and Kathryn

John and Kathryn had both been members of Great Expectations for six months when the pair selected each other at a speed dating event. They both decided to join Great Expectations because they were looking for a higher quality dating experience. John proposed to Kathryn this past March and the pair married June 5, 2012 in Tuscany, and plan on continuing the celebration in Maui. When people ask about their experience with Great Expectations they respond saying that you get out of it what you put into it. Congratulations to the happy couple!

When Marys husband of 26 years passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life? When Mary replied, I dont know. Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene its becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. Thats where Great Expectations Scotts-dale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Ex-pectations has perfected a suite of match-making services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Unlike other dating ser-vices that entrust applicants to input their

own data, Great Expectations profession-als meet every potential client in person to interview and screen each applicant. Recently, Great Expectations Scottsdale announced Tammy Smith, who has been with the company since 1998, as their new Center Director. Tammy has had the pleasure of meeting and matching multiple couples through the years. At Great Expectations we per-sonally meet and interview each member so they are pre-screened before they can join. We also run background checks on each member. When you join an online dating site, you dont know who youre connecting with, says Tammy. We find its best for our clients to not be surprised by who theyre meeting. We take our own photos and we provide videotaped con-versations as well. We will be as involved in your experience as much as you want us to be, acting as a personal dating liai-son and coaching you along the way. In addition to pre-screening each potential client, Great Expectations pro-vides ample opportunities for members to meet like-minded singles in whichever environment theyre most comfortable. We hold a variety of fun, safe, singles events to help get you out into the Great Expectations community, says Ashley

Fox, the Great Expectations Scottsdale Event Coordinator. After you become a member you are invited to every event from speed dating, hiking, cooking classes, casino nights, masquerade balls, wine tastings and much more! So say goodbye to blind dates, awkward set-ups and scary online ex-periences. and contact Great Expecta-tions today. Its safe, private, experienced matchmaking made easy. Take the first step today. Mary & Gene have the same thoughts as many of our success stories about Great Expectations: It worked for us! If it wasnt for Great Expectations and its staff we wouldnt have found each other! And to anyone considering join-ing Great Expectations they add: What do you have to lose?

To learn more about Great Expectations call or visit the web-

site. Tammy and her team look forward to helping you change your

    dating life! 480-941-0500

    REVIEWERS, ROUNDTABLE

The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazines film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekends new releases.

Dorfman in LoveSara Rue plays a single suburbanite who volunteers to cat sit at her unrequited loves downtown L.A loft and meets another man who appreciates her thereby prompting her to transforms not only the mess of a loft but also the mess of herself. Playing exclusively at Harkins Shea 14. (PG-13 - 92 minutes)

Joseph: It is a shame that Dorfman in Love is not a better movie. After all, the new romantic comedy propagates a very admirable message about being ones self and stars actress Sara Rue who really does deserve more recognition for her talent. However, despite those

two strengths, the flick fails to take its own advice and instead desperately tries to be what Hollywood wants it to be rather than constructing an identity unique to itself. This cookie-cutter effort features less characters than it does caricatures who navigate the formulaic plot with predictability right up until its ham-fisted finale. (Grade: D)

AdmissionTina Fey plays a Princeton admissions officer who, up for a promotion, takes a professional risk when an alternative school teacher (Paul Rudd) introduces her to a college-bound kid who just might be the son she gave up years ago in a secret adoption. (PG-13 - 100 minutes)

Stan: Admittedly, I havent viewed Tina Feys television work (Saturday Night Live or 30 Rock) but have enjoyed her feature film roles and the slightly off-center quick recovery edge she brings to those characters. In Admission she once again gave me that quick recovery characterization with just the right look here or a gesture there, which helped to weather an other wise lackluster story. (Grade: C)

Joseph: If anyone asks you to see Admission with them, swiftly reject their offer. If they then see the new comedy without you and say that it was anything other than a complete waste of their time, immediately deny having ever known them. Tina Fey is utterly unfunny as a character

who is socially impaired and ultimately unlikeable while Paul Rudd appears as though he is starring in another movie altogether - a movie that may have actually been worth watching. A scene in which the wannabe freshmens fates are decided is kind of compelling but the rest should be renounced. (Grade: D)

The End of LoveMark Webber plays a struggling actor who kindles a relationship with a single mother (Shannyn Sossamon) and begins to realize that he can no longer remain in denial about the real-life consequences his choices have on his own son. Playing exclusively at Harkins Valley Art. (NR - 90 minutes)

Joseph: The End of Love may be one of the most incredibly intimate motion pictures you will ever witness, exhibiting - with unparalleled honesty - the deeply emotional bond between a parent and their child. That honesty is due in part to actor Mark Webber

possibly want in an entire season of 24 condensed into two intense hours. It is hard to believe that director Antoine Fuquas new action-thriller was not initially conceived as a mission for Jack Bauer because it seems tailor-made for him. However, Gerard Butlers Mike Banning is a spectacular stand-in, single-handedly saving the day in such a way that ensures viewers a really riveting time from the moment the White House comes under crowd attack to the last-ditch effort to protect the presidents life and simultaneously stop Americas apocalypse. (Grade: B)

With English subtitles, nothing is lost in the translation as the crucial yes or No objective is laid bare before the viewer. And yes, from history we know the outcome of the campaign, what a thrill to learn the details of the journey of the No campaign.(Grade: B)

The GirlAbbie Cornish plays a single mother who, struggling with the loss of her child to Social Services, crosses paths with that of a young girl from Mexico and begins a journey that will change her life - discovering that she is the architect of her own fate and learning what it is that truly defines home. Playing exclusively at AMC Arizona Center 24. (PG-13 - 95 minutes)

Joseph: The Girl is a timely and touching tale of transformation through tragedy. Writer/director David Rikers new drama, which is in the same vein as 2007s Under the Same Moon and 2011s A Better Life, tackles the topic of illegal immigration in a way that encourages viewers to consider the outlook of those on the other side of the fence yet never truly takes sides and instead challenges said viewers to come to their own complex

Olympus Has FallenGerard Butler plays a disgraced former presidential guard who, when the White House is captured by a terrorist mastermind (Rick Yune) and the President (Aaron Eckhart) is kidnapped, helps retake the White House, save the President and avert an even bigger disaster. (R - 118 minutes)

Stan: One of my favorite story genres of One man against all odds, as in the Die Hard franchise, director Antoine Fuqua expertly melds the story plot with outstanding special effects for a non-stop action ride from beginning to the closing credits start to roll at end, and sets the tone for Gerard Butler to more than aptly convince us that the will to save America is the substance of a hero. (Grade: B)

Joseph: Olympus Has Fallen is explosively exciting, exceptionally suspenseful and has everything that one could

NoGael Garcia Bernal plays a brash young advertising executive who spearheads the campaign against Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochets 1988 re-election efforts. (R - 110 minutes)

Stan: Always intriguing as historical events are visited on screen from a behind-the-scenes perspective, director Pablo Larrain captures the fervor and zeal in almost a documentary style, of the analytical and constantly adjusting efforts of any marketing campaign as the intention of swaying the sentiments of voters toward a particular candidate, whether locally or in a foreign country.

On the RoadSam Riley and Garrett Headlund play an aspiring writer and an ex-con who, determined not to get locked into a constricted life, cut their ties and take to the road in search of the world, of other encounters and of themselves. Kristen Stewart also stars. Playing exclusively at Harkins Camelview 5. (R - 124 minutes)

Stan:Commonly called Road movies and preferring the reference of Discovery films, director Walter Salles latest brought to mind my own six month lost soul journey that occurred in May of 68 upon my return from serving in Vietnam to reestablish my essences that were buried deep within my psychic. The slow and deliberate pacing of On the Road serves to give one pause to reflect on our own thoughts while the breathtaking cinematography is a reminder of the wonder of living life.(Grade: C+)

Randy: There is something oddly likable about this screen adaptation of Jack Kerouacs novel of the same name. It is certainly not one of the best movies of the season and the studio has pushed its Phoenix release back numerous times, but one can admire the free spirit of the characters. Also impressive are the performances by the young and talented cast (and yes, even Kristen Stewart). Sam Riley and Horizon High Schools Garrett Hedlund are just as likeable in their not so likable roles. (Grade: B)

Joseph: Regardless of the company that they might afford you, some road trips should just never be taken. On the Road is one of them. Director Walter Salles cinematic adaptation of Jack Kerouacs novel of the same title is a tedious, overlong and meandering motion picture - which is a shame considering its cast includes the likes of Kristen Stewart, Amy Adams and Viggo Mortensen. Sure, the scenery is sometimes spectacular but you are almost guaranteed to get lost along the way - be it out of sheer boredom or simply out of the strenuously spontaneous nature of the narrative. (Grade: F)

Spring BreakersAshley Benson, Vanessa Hudgens, Rachel Korine and Selena Gomez play best friends whose serendipitous encounter with a rapper (James Franco) promises to provide them with all the thrill and excitement they could hope for and a spring break they will never forget. Playing exclusively at Harkins Tempe Marketplace. (R - 92 minutes)

Stan: Starting out as the usual Spring Break stereotypical movie and purporting the usual theme of sex, drugs, and music as the prime directive of the college break, t he theme slowly shifts to one of survival as each of the four best friends arrives at the crucial decision, some taking longer than other members of the group, that the path they are on is truly The path less traveled by. I was mesmerized by James Francos character portrayal, which is truly void of the finer nuances of his own personality traits as I was reminded of the performance of Sean Penn in This Must Be the Place, which garnered my Best Actor award for 2012.(Grade C+)

Joseph: If writer/director Harmony Korines intention with his new crime drama Spring Breakers was to make viewers feel as though they have been drugged and are experiencing 90 minutes of extremely unpleasant intoxication, he hit that nail square on its head. The movie is artistically incompetent, substituting

a structured narrative with something that looks more like a cross between a commercial and a music video. Worst of all, though, Korrines project is a direct insult toward young women - exploiting their bodies to pornographic effect and suggesting that the vast majority of them are soulless, money-hungry nymphomaniacs who are completely incapable of self-respecting behavior. (Grade: F)

Looper (2012): Some of Willis best work in years boosts this sci-fi tale about a hit man who meets his younger self (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).Red (2010): Willis does everything he does best, in terms of action and humor, in this graphic-novel-inspired tale of former government agents who reunite to battle a common threat.Armageddon (1998): Willis is typically tough and good as an oil driller who leads his team into outer space to destroy an asteroid.Die Hard (1988): Willis cemented his screen image as wisecracking New York cop John McClane, whos in the wrong place at the wrong time when terrorists overtake the Los Angeles building where his wife works.

NSOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHTWriter/Director/Actor Mark Weber (The End of Love) By Joseph J. Airdo

Writer/Director David Riker (The Girl) By Joseph J. Airdo

The whole film was improvised but it was very structured improv. Basically, I wrote a treatment with this very specific story that I wanted to tell about very specific characters and how they related to each other. I set up very elaborate settings between me and my son so that no matter what we were doing in these improvised moments it would be fueling the story and these plot points that we needed to hit.

I wanted to blur the lines between reality and fiction. I wanted people to experience this film in a way that they dont normally experience movies. A lot of times, you go see a movie and say, That was a great

movie or That was a great performance. I wanted to try and extract that a little bit and make it feel a little dangerous and a little odd at some points so you say, What is this? Is this really this guy? Is this really his child? Did this really happen?

In order to achieve those kinds of emotions that I wanted to invoke in people, I shot it with a cinma vrit/fly-on-the-wall style. We used these really small Canon 5D cameras and turned their limitations into their strengths. That way, I was able to set up situations and make them feel like real life as opposed to people performing. Mark Weber

The starting point of this film is a question that I had as a writer - What does it mean to live in the epicenter of the American dream and feel not hope but sort of shutout or trapped? This is the question that our main character - played by Abbie Cornish - faces as an Anglo woman living in South Texas working at Walmart.

She is living in the very place that all of the immigrants want to get to. So why doesnt she feel filled with hope and that sense of new future and possibilities in her life? That question led me to question the very myth of the border, which is that hope is just to the north. How is it possible that the South is without hope?

How is it possible that the North is filled with hope when many of us dont feel it?

And now I realize that hope is not in the North or the South. Hope is in the person crossing. Hope is something that is carried inside. The film turns the border upside down sends this Anglo woman across the border, south against the current of the migrant stream. Abbie Cornish, without ever really thinking it through, ends up making the migrant journey in reverse - from a big box store in Texas to a small village in southern Mexico. And along the way she has a profound awakening as a human being. David Riker

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazines film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

  • Twenty years ago, you could count the beer available at a high end restaurant on one hand. The sommelier, while a trained expert in wine, could also claim good knowledge about the meager beer choices. Times have blissfully changed such that the craft beer world is more complex and the choices are more plentiful. However, this brought up the need for a new kind of beer specialist to don the mantle of a beer sommelier. Except Beer Sommelier did not do the concept justice. The term sommelier is more commonly thought of as wine, and this concept of a beer serving expert needed to stand on its own. Enter Ray Daniels and his Cicerone program.

In 2008, the Cicerone Certification Program was introduced by the Craft Beer Institute, a Chicago-based beer and brewing education organization. The program is directed by brewing industry veteran and published author, Ray Daniels.

The Cicerone Certification Program (Cicerone is pronounced sis-uh-rohn) seeks to ensure that consumers receive the best possible beer and enjoy its flavors to the greatest extent possible. To facilitate this, those who sell and serve beer need to acquire

    Beer Storage, Sales and Service

    Beer Styles and Culture

    Beer Tasting and Flavors

    Brewing Ingredients and

    Processes

    Pairing Beer with Food

The three levels of Cicerone certification are: Certified Beer Server, Certified Cicerone, and Master Cicerone. Currently, there are only six Master Cicerones and the Certified Beer Server count has passed 50,000. Anyone with passion and knowledge for beer can take the Certified Beer Sever exam online at www.cicerone.org

Cicerone is a word in old English that means one who conducts visitors and sightseers to museums and explains matters of archaeological, antiquarian, historic or artistic interest. But Ray Daniels decided the Ciceronetitle was better suited for the purposes of knowing, serving, and storing beer to improve the customers tasting experience. Anyone can call themselves a beer sommelier regardless of knowledge or experience. And while some will be highly skilled, the only way to demonstrate that objectively is through independent testing of knowledge and tasting ability. The Cicerone Certification Program offers that independent assessment and certification so that industry professionalsas well as consumerscan be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers.

The testing process is rigid at the Certified and Master levels, a little less so for the Certified Beer Server which is an online test. The two higher certifications require a

candidate to sit for an exam. At the Certified level, the exam is about four hours and starts with a written test of approximately 150 essay and short answer questions. Topics include everything from the proper method of cleaning draft lines to hop growing countries to breaking down a food recipe in order to determine the best beer to pair with it. After the written exam comes a fairly intense sensory exam designed to measure the candidates ability to spot off-flavors that would make a beer unacceptable to be served. Finally a demonstration is video taped for grading. The demonstration is a hand on display of book knowledge that can be translated in to regular beer service.

Are the tests difficult? In the time they have been offered, about 50,000 people have passed the Certified Beer Server, 400 the Certified Cicerone and only a small handful have achieved the Master title. The pass rate on the Certified exam is about 30 percent, less on the Master.

Why does Ray Daniels get to determine the criteria for being a Cicerone? Well besides this being his concept, he may be one of the most qualified people in the world. Ray, a Chicago resident, has traveled the world judging beer, launched festivals and written four books. His book, Designing Great Beers, is a must have for anybody considering home brewing. But the brewing and hospitality industries could just as well have decided that the Cicerone program was meaningless or unnecessary. They did no such thing. Breweries and distributorships have lined up to take the exam, and

restaurants, like the beer-heavy and always-packed The Publican in Chicago, began mandating that front-of-house employees become certified. As craft beer has inched toward maturity more breweries, more quality, more distribution and more sales Daniels correctly guessed that there would be a hunger for standards in beer service, handling and presentation. Ray had the credibility to do this, said Paul Gatza, director of the Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association, where Daniels worked before launching the program. He had a network of connections that knew him and knew that if he did it, it would be a quality program. And people wanted it.

Proper service of good beer is Daniels goal, stated simply, I never again want to be served a bad beer in a bar. To that end, Daniels believes deeply in the beer clean glass, which must be rinsed prior to serving to remove traces of sanitizer. Many bartenders give beers a classic German pour, straight down the middle, left to settle, then topped off.

This is not Daniels pouring ideal. His oft-repeated motto is, It takes two hands to pour a beer, and his method is this: hold the glass at a 45 degree angle, pour along the side, then about halfway through, tilt both glass and bottle vertical. You want an inch or so of head. If you want to be a Cicerone, youd better know that. The biggest problem in American

    AZ LOCALS ONLY BEER PAGE

    BY KING JAMES SWANN

Hello again craft beer lovers, today Id like to take a minute to tell you all about a Facebook page I have created with a couple of other awesome Beer Geeks called AZ Locals Only Beer Page. Why another page right? There is already the Arizona Lets Talk Craft Beer page and the most popular of all, Arizona Craft Beer Lovers pages out there in cyberspace where beer aficionados get together to pontificate on whats happening in the wide world of beer. Im sure most of you have seen or utilized one or the other of these sites at some point as they are both a great source of information.

What makes AZ Locals Only Beer Page different is that one perfect word in the title, LOCAL. This is a page for Local Beer and Local Beer Business only. As silly as it sounds, I even have a catch phrase for it: If its Local Beer, Post it Here! Right, there it is all clear now eh? Its a great place to post reviews, pictures, opinions, happenings and anything else that surrounds local beer along with the breweries, pubs and other businesses that make it all so special. Is the audience a bit different than the other beer sights? I should hope so being that this baby is for lovers of what happens right here in their own back yards. Whos your new favorite brewery, what was that new beer you just had at SanTan or Sun Up Brewing and how was it? This is the place to talk it up!

As our beer community grows so should new mediums with which to express your love, dedication and opinions for whats going on. So there you have it, now go and post already as time is a wastin!

    Until next Week, Cheers!

drinking habits is that we dont drink beer all week, and then we have five on Friday night, he said. Better we should make alcohol a part of the diet regularly and moderately, not something for bingeing.

Daniels is constantly looking to educate and build his program. After being poured a particularly bad looking beer, he will take a photo of it for teaching purposes. For example a beer with no head and small bubbles on the side of the glass will get a picture as a good lesson of what not to do. This is an indication that the glass is not beer clean and sadly, according to Daniels, this is how most American bars pour beer.

So, what does a Cicerone need to know? Take a look at the questions below to see if you measure up. More details can be found at www.cicerone.org

SanTan Brewing Packs Pine-apple Goodness into a Can this Spring, Hitting the Arizona Market in MarchSanTan Brewing Companys summer seasonal, Mr. Pine-apple Wheat Ale is back and available in the can! Just in time for summer camping trips and cookouts, Mr. Pineapple hits stores in late March.

Winner of a silver medal at the 2011 Great American Beer Fes-tival competition, Mr. Pineapple is a refreshing and fruity tradi-tional German Wheat ale using white wheat, two-row and Munich malt. It was originally developed as a signature brew for SanTan Brewing Companys annual Luau celebration dur-ing the hot summer months in Arizona. Fresh pineapple is added during the primary

fermentation then crushed and cooled to allow the natural flavors to infuse the traditional wheat beer for a refreshing twist. Mr. Pineapple is made with Columbus hops, German wheat and has a hazy straw gold color boasting a 5% ABV and 20 IBU.12 oz cans of Mr. Pineapple will be available at valley craft beer retailers by the end of March through September, 2013. In November, 2012, SanTan BrewingCompany launched Arizonas first ever seasonal canned beer series with the introduction of Rail Slide Impe-rial Spiced Ale. Mr. Pineapple is the third seasonal brew to don an aluminum suit. To find a pint of Mr. Pineapple near you, visit SanTan Brewing Companys Beer Detective online atwww.santanbrewing.com/find-san-tan-on-tap.
