Our Vision Statement

“Ubi caritas et amor, deus ibi est” Where charity and true love are found, God himself is

there.

We, the Roman Catholic community of South Washington County Maryland, as members of the Body of Christ, are

called to witness our faith by setting the standard of love and goodwill in our community. We pledge our lives to

Christ and profess a unified commitment to spreading His gospel through our worship and ministry. As servants to

the Lord and our neighbors, we will remain always mindful of the needs of this Pastorate and all of God’s

people.

From the Desk of Father John Jicha

Dear Parishioners,

In this weekend's gospel, the Sadducees argued with Jesus, saying that his teaching about the resurrection of the dead could imply polyandry – a woman having multiple husbands - in heaven. Notice that they're not worried about polygamy, a man preceded in death by seven wives. Wives were thought of as a possession, given away in marriage - like slaves - and according to logic of the Sadducees, one could conceivably own more than one such possession at a time.

Polyandry, multiple husbands “owning” the same woman, was different. One woman could not serve seven husbands in heaven, because all of them would have had eternally irreconcilable rival claims on her as their exclusive possession.

But Jesus tells the Sadducees that they're being far too literal. No one will be possessed by anyone in the life to come. Moreover, because even the healthiest marital love on earth is of necessity exclusive - certainly that was Jesus' understanding - it is just a faint image of the unimaginably great love of heaven, which is of necessity non-exclusive. Thus in heaven there is no marriage as we think of it and hence no polyandry or polygamy. The love of heaven is greater than marital love at its very best because it is not exclusive, all are fully free, no one possesses anyone else, there are no conflicting claims.

Juan 14: 1-3.

Reading II: II Thessalonians 3: 7-12 Certain people have not accepted Paul’s example of working for his livelihood. By not working, they interfere with others in the community who strive for a stable way of living.

The Gospel: Luke 21: 5-19 Jesus had met controversy all throughout His ministry, especially in Jerusalem. He predicts the same treatment for His disciples. But He urges them to persevere amid all of it, knowing that His triumph will be theirs as well.
