Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
In the Gospel this weekend, we are told that as Jesus
continued his mission of going to Jerusalem, “he traveled through
Samaria and Galilee.” Samaria was not on the way, and was
considered a foreign land. In the first reading, a foreigner from
Samaria experiences miraculous healing in the Jordan river. A
new setting can give us a different perspective on things. So, this
past week, I did something different. I eliminated some of my
regular full schedule and limited myself to just weekday Masses
and a few meetings and events. I took some extra time off, packed
a suitcase, and moved to Our Lady of Joy Church for the week. As
you know, Father Jinto George lives there in a separate apart-
ment, but there is still another space for a priest there, so I moved
in for the week and got a different perspective on the church there
and our grouping in general. Father Jinto was in classes much of
the week, so I got some extra time for quiet and prayer too,
enjoying the beautiful porch and backyard in the evening. There
isn’t really space for me to do the same at St. Irenaeus or St.
Januarius rectories, but I hope to live at St. Joseph sometime after
Christmas to get a different perspective from there. I continue to
encourage everyone in our grouping to visit another church in our
grouping for Masses and other events and get a different
perspective too.
This week, on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, we celebrate our first
anniversary of the On Mission process by which we were all put
together by our Bishop, with the task of becoming one community.
What a year it has been! We’ve had our challenges. Lately, I see
more reason to have hope with some of the ways our communities
have come together. Not everything we do will be a huge success
because were a new community functioning in new ways. Babies
tend to fall down a lot when they’re learning to walk. We may fall
down sometimes, but we know that we are to walk by faith, not by
sight, and we walk with Jesus who journeyed into foreign places
too. Each of our parish pastoral councils was tasked with creating
some events that would help to build relationships and establish
greater unity among us. We’ve seen this in the first OPV festival at
St. John the Baptist, the St. Januarius Pork Roast Dinner, and we
look to a Veterans’ Tribute at St. Joseph Church in November. St.
Irenaeus is planning a breakfast speaker series; Our Lady of Joy
is rethinking a festive dinner. All five councils are looking for other
opportunities too.
This coming week, I am sending a letter to every registered
parishioner in each of our five parishes, along with a free
inspirational book. The book contains testimonials of the title,
“Why I Love Being Catholic.” Please read at least some of it and
allow it to inspire you in your Catholic faith. I am also asking every
parish to have a Town Hall style meeting with their parish
leadership who will review what we have done so far and what we
plan to do as we move forward, hopefully becoming one new
parish in July, 2020. We would also like to hear from parishioners
about questions or concerns that still exist. We will try to answer
them at them at the meeting, or follow up in a formal response.
While we might still resist change, have difficulty, or find the
process of combining all of our parishes into one new parish
nearly impossible, we also know that nothing is impossible with
God. We will continue praying that with the different situations we
find ourselves in, we can also look for fresh, new perspectives on
our lives in relationship to one another and with our saving God.
In Christ’s love,
Father Kevin
Father of Mercy, during this time of transition, help us to
grow in unity with St. Irenaeus, St. Januarius, St. John the
Baptist, St. Joseph, and Our Lady of Joy. Grant us the
wisdom and willingness to understand how our parishes will
become stronger and more vibrant in fulfilling the mission of
the church. Assist us in opening our arms to welcome others
as we continue to journey On Mission for the Church Alive!
Help us, O Lord, to trust in the future you have planned for
us. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

READING I 2 KGS 5:14-17
Naaman went down and plunged into the Jordan seven times
at the word of Elisha, the man of God. His flesh became again like
the flesh of a little child, and he was clean of his leprosy.
Naaman returned with his whole retinue to the man of God. On
his arrival he stood before Elisha and said, "Now I know that there
is no God in all the earth, except in Israel. Please accept a gift
from your servant."
Elisha replied, "As the LORD lives whom I serve, I will not take it;"
and despite Naaman's urging, he still refused. Naaman said: "If
you will not accept, please let me, your servant, have two
mule-loads of earth, for I will no longer offer holocaust or sacrifice
to any other god except to the LORD."
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 98:1, 2-3, 3-4
R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds;
his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm.
R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
The LORD has made his salvation known: in the sight of the
nations he has revealed his justice. He has remembered his
kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel.
R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God.
Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands: break into song; sing
praise.
R. The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power.
READING 2 2 TM 2:8-13
Beloved: Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, a
descendant of David: such is my gospel, for which I am suffering,
even to the point of chains, like a criminal. But the word of God is
not chained. Therefore, I bear with everything for the sake of
those who are chosen, so that they too may obtain the salvation
that is in Christ Jesus, together with eternal glory. This saying is
trustworthy: If we have died with him we shall also live with him; if
we persevere we shall also reign with him. But if we deny him he
will deny us. If we are unfaithful he remains faithful, for he cannot
deny himself.
R. Alleluia, alleluia 1 PT 1:25
In all circumstances, give thanks, for this is the will of God for you
in Christ Jesus.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 17:11-19
As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through
Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met
him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices,
saying, Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!" And when he saw them,
he said, "Go show yourselves to the priests." As they were going
they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been
healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the
feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in
reply, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other
nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to
God?" Then he said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has
saved you."
SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
MARÍA, ICONO PERFECTO DE LA FE (Segunda parte)…
Lc 1, 46-55). Con gozo y temblor
dio a luz a su único hijo, manteniendo intacta su virginidad (cfr. Lc 2, 6
jornada».
La Santísima Virgen «vive totalmente de la y en relación con el Señor;
está en actitud de escucha, atenta a captar los signos de Dios en el
camino de su pueblo; está inserta en una historia de fe y de
esperanza en las promesas de Dios, que constituye el tejido de su
existencia».

MINISTRY AT OPV CATHOLIC
FUNERAL PRAYER VIGIL MINISTRY
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give
us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in
disguise. They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey
together. One of the 7 works of Mercy is the directive to BURY THE
DEAD. The OPV parishes have taken this mandate to heart for many years
in the various manifestations of care for the deceased and their family and
friends. Funerals give us the opportunity to grieve and show others support
during difficult times. Through our prayers and actions during these times
we show our respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to
those who mourn. Two information times will be offered to explain the
Ministry of Funeral Prayer Vigil, an outreach of love, compassion and
evangelization. Anyone interested in praying at a funeral home during the
time of loss of a fellow parishioner’s loved one is welcomed. Come and
learn how God can use you to bring His love to others during this sad time.
Information will be shared on Wednesday, October 30 at 1:00 pm in the St.
Elizabeth Room at St. John the Baptist. A second information time is
scheduled for Monday, November 4 at 1:00 pm at St. Joseph Rectory in
Verona. For more information call Peg at 412 795-1281.

Volunteers Needed
SOS (Serving Our Seniors) Ministry

Jesus calls us to care for the elderly and give them our greatest
respect. The OPV Catholic SOS (Serving Our Seniors) Home and
Transportation and Services Ministry is a volunteerbased service
that provides nonmedical services that assist and aid OPV Catholic
senior parishioners that are 55 years of age and older. Our mission is
to help our seniors, so that they can remain living in their homes and
communities while remaining independent and healthy. Assistance
may include transportation to medical appointments, caregiver relief,
friendly visits, minor home repairs, help around the house, minor
yard work, errands and shopping, etc. The SOS Ministry is in need
of volunteers to assist us in providing these services. If you can
spare about 1 to 2 hours of time for a typical volunteer effort, you
can help us to provide these services to our seniors and provide
them with comfort and help when their family members cannot be
there. If you would like to be an SOS Volunteer, simply call the SOS
Home and Transportation Services at the Rectory
(4127934511) or Barb at 7243273996.

FUNERAL CROSS
As we continue the journey to becoming
one parish often some of our individual
traditions change as new ones are
evolving. For many years at 0LOJ there
was the tradition of receiving a cross
during the funeral liturgy.
As of October 5, 2019 this tradition will
be discontinued as we begin creating
new ways to celebrate the lives of those
who died.

IN OUR GROUPING AND AROUND THE DIOCESE...
MEET THE STAFF
Brit Meli
Communications and
Technology Manager,
OPV Catholic

Hailing from Rochester, NY – Brit came to
OPV Catholic last November as our new
Communications and Technology
Manager. With a BA in Communication Studies from Canisius College
(Buffalo) and two MA’s from The University at Buffalo in Media Studies
(Film) and English, Brit comes to OPV with more than 10 years of tech,
media, film, and graphic design experience under her belt.
Born and raised Catholic, Brit chose to continue her Catholic
education past high school and went to Canisius College, a Jesuit
Catholic University. There, she worked in Campus Ministry as a
Communications and Marketing intern for most of her college
experience, while working on a BA in Communication Studies as well
as minors in Sociology and Peace and Justice Studies. She enjoyed
taking part in service opportunities such as Alternative Spring Break to
E. Wheeling, WV, working with refugees seeking asylum in the East
side of Buffalo at Vive la Casa, and spending her winter breaks from
school in The Bronx working with Catholic Charities in an after-school
program. In between her BA and MA’s, Brit did a year of service in
Southwest Detroit with the Sisters of Mercy Volunteer Corps. She
worked as Assistant Campus Minister at Detroit Cristo Rey High
School as well as Communication Coordinator for a small community
theatre named Matrix Theatre Company. Brit has always felt called to
serve and feels blessed in this newest chapter of her life, working with
the OPV Catholic community.
In her spare time, Brit loves to play and walk with her service dog
Tesla, spend quality time with friends and family, show off pictures of
her adorable nephew Joshua, make short films with her friends, kayak,
motorcycle, and spend as much time outside as possible. She looks
forward to all of the adventure that lies ahead for her while she gets to
know Pittsburgh and our community in faith.
