Every Lent brings back to my memory the incident of serving at The Stations of the Cross. I was just a second grader and attended the parish school. The primary school was scheduled in the afternoon. During the break (recess) one of my friends asked to accompany him in the church and help in holding the candle. I agreed and thus held one of the candles at his side as he was bearing the heavy cross. I followed his instructions, moving along and making stops at different spots, not knowing exactly whprayerful devotion was about. I am sure you must have guessed what I am talking about. Every Catholic Church /chapel has the Stations of the Cross mounted or engraved on the walls depicting the sorrowful journey of our Savior to Calvary. The Stations of the Cross is a devotion that was introduced in the late middle ages. It was promoted by St. Bernard of Clairvaux, St. Francis of Assisi, and St. Bonaventure. Added to this is the interest and enthusiasm of the Crusades which led to the Christian pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The devotion originated from the desire of the early Christians who went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. From the earliest decades the church in Jerusalem revered the burial grounds and other spots connected to the Way of the Cross. They walked prayerfully these sacred places making their journey to the place of the crucifixion of Jesus. There arose from this a natural inclination to make the pilgrimage experience more frequent and available to all people. During the season of Lent we reflect on the passion of our Savior. The Church has given us this remarkable devotion “the Stations of the Cross” to assist us in contemplation on the suffering of Christ. At every

t we reflect on the passion of our Savior. The Church has given us this remarkable devotion “the Stations of the Cross” to assist us in contemplation on the suffering of Christ. At every
station we see with our eyes and imagine prayerfully the pain and agony Jesus underwent. In praying the stations we imagine ourselves walking with Jesus on this journey. We then relate this to whatever is going on in our lives, specifically our pain and sorrow. The unjust execution of Christ brings to mind our brothers and sisters who are persecuted unjustly for their faith in Christ in other parts of the world. By walking the stations we can literally move towards Christ, accepting our crosses and relying on His grace. May the Lord bless us all.
