T h e P a p e r Pulpit

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s gospel from St. Luke, Jesus tells the disciples that he is going to share this parable, "For the benefit of those

who are fully convinced of their own righteousness, who are convinced that they are who they should be, what they

should be, because of themselves." ... As this Pharisee goes into the temple to pray, [he] elaborates all the good things

that he does, so he's responsible for that.

What Jesus is trying to say is, to start our prayer, we must be really justified, which means being in right relationship

with God, faithful to our covenant relationships that were made for us through baptism, repeated regularly in the

Eucharist. We should be in this right relationship -- understanding who we are, who God is -- so that when we pray,

we start from that awareness. I am who I am because of God. I have been drawn into existence by God out of love.

God's love drew me into being; God's love constantly supports me. Everything I do is supported by God's loving me. I

don't earn things from God because I do this, that, or the other thing.

When we pray, it must always be from that awareness that it starts with God. In the first letter of John, there's a

passage where John is trying to describe for us who God is and says, "God is love," and then reminds us, "Here's what

love means: not that we have first loved God, but God has first loved us." That right relationship with God has been

established when we have come to God with an awareness that God first loved us. Then, our relationship with God

will continue to be one of thanks and praise and a response of love for all that God has first done for us.

Diocesan Annual Appeal: You should have received your pledge card. If we all do our share, our parish not only

makes its appeal target, but gets money back to be used for a variety of projects. Last year we got back over $4,000.

Many churches ask their membership to donate 10%. Even though this idea is biblical, the Catholic Church asks each

member to be generous. Since my arrival as your pastor, I have never once asked you about your giving or to increase

your giving. I have asked everyone to contribute to the Annual Appeal. I realize the economy is tight, but many of us

are doing quite well. A good way of knowing how we are contributing is by looking at how much we give to God

versus other expenses in our lives. Remember the slogan “Give God what is right, not what is left”. Please be

Generous. If you don’t give, then someone else will be asked to make up the difference, which really is not fair.

Please consider giving what you gave last year plus a bit more. All dollars made beyond our goal come back to the

parish “tax free”. I am kindly asking each family to give something to the annual appeal. If you have not contributed

before, could you donate even $25?

Keys: The church has been re-keyed. Your old keys will not work. Over the years, lots of keys have been handed

out, and there was no system in place to keep track of who had what keys. A limited numbers of keys have been made

and will be given out. New keys will be given to staff members, committee chairs who hold monthly meetings, and

MC’s (who open and close the church on the weekends). Anyone requesting a key should see Fr. Jim for an

application. Keys will also be given out to those who periodically use the building on an “as needed” basis. Please

keep in mind having a key in the past is not a good reason for having a key in the future and has nothing to do with

“trust”. Rather, it is about “need”.

Adult Faith Formation: As you know, Pope Francis has declared this a year of Divine Mercy. The Year of Mercy

ends in November. On Tuesday evening, October 18th, we will begin a 5 part series on Divine Mercy. Come and hear

the message of God's love for us. We begin with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction at 5:00PM,

followed by Mass at 6:00PM followed by supper at 6:30PM. The reflection on Divine Mercy begins at 7:15PM. We

will be finished by 8:30PM. Come for the whole evening or part of the night.

God’s Blessings,

Fr. Jim Trempe
