ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA
Saint Paul, in today’s reading from his letter to the Romans, has us reflect on our Baptism.
Since many of us were baptized as infants, we may not truly realize the life-giving event that
happened at our Baptism. Even when we look again at our Baptismal pictures, we may not
understand what has taken place. Saint Paul begins by reminding us: “Are you unaware that
we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?” What does it mean to
be “baptized into His death”? It may sound morbid, but truly it is not. Baptism is more than
merely having water poured over us and special oils, the Oil of Baptism and the Oil of Chrism,
placed upon us. At that moment, for the rest of our lives, we are placed in a personal
relationship with Jesus. For those who are old enough, we remember the remark that, at the
moment of our Baptism, we received an indelible mark upon our soul that marks us as a
follower of Jesus. That mark cannot be removed. So then, if we have this mark, we are to live as Jesus would have us live
always. As Saint Paul says in his letter: “Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in
Christ Jesus.” In another words, Jesus does not want lip service. He wants us to be, as we hear at Mass right before we say
the Our Father: “Through Him, with Him, and in Him.” So, everything we do must begin and end in Him. Let us not take our
Baptism lightly, but let us truly live it out.
We should also remember, as Jesus says in today’s Gospel reading, that we cannot let things get in the way of following Him.
He reminds us: “Whoever receives you receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives the One who sent Me.” So just as the
tabernacle in our church is where we place the consecrated hosts, making it the home of our God; Jesus reminds us by His
words, that we, by Baptism, also become tabernacles, as we carry Jesus with us all the time. Let us remember our life-giving
event of Baptism and our role as tabernacles.
God Bless,

Please write individual checks for each dif-ferent type of donation: CSA, candles, spe-cial diocesan collections and any other. These collections are processed separately.
Regular offertory donations can be combined into one check & 1 envelope if you prefer to donate monthly.

FAMILY LIFE Today’s gospel challenges us to resist the individualism of our culture. Everything we are and have is pure gift which we are expected to share especially to the “lowly ones.” What has been freely given needs to be shared freely. No strings attached.

SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Whether statues or stained glass, the image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus can be found in churches all
over the world. Jesus looks down, one hand extended out and another pointing to a heart wreathed in
thorns and glowing with light. In the Sacred Heart, we see both the sorrow and the joy of the life of
Christ, who became one of us out of love. "Jesus knew and loved us each and all during his life, his ag-
ony, and his Passion and gave himself up for each one of us ? He has loved us all with a human
heart" (CCC 478). In the Incarnation, God becomes man. Jesus experienced the fullness of humanity,
including its sufferings. June 8th is the Feast of the Sacred Heart. We remember all that Jesus endured
for us. We also remember why he endured it -- out of love.
Jesus revealed 12 promises to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque for those who honor the Sacred Heart:
1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state in life.
2. I will establish peace in their families.
3. I will comfort them in their trials.
4. I will be their secure refuge during life, and, above all, in death.
5. I will shed abundant blessings on all their
undertakings.
6. Sinners will find in My Heart an infinite ocean
of mercy.
7. Lukewarm souls will become fervent.
8. Fervent souls will rapidly grow in holiness and
perfection.
9. I will bless every place where an image of My
Heart shall be exposed and honored.
10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the
most hardened hearts.
11. The names of those who promote this devo-
tion will be written in My Heart, never to be blot-
ted out.
12. I promise thee, in the excessive mercy of My Heart, that My all-powerful love will grant to all those
who receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, the grace of final peni-
tence; they shall not die in My disgrace nor without receiving their Sacraments; My Divine Heart shall
be their safe refuge in this last moment.
You can check out the Sacred Heart window at St. Bernard. It is on the Blessed Mother side of the church above the confessionals.
