ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BRADFORD APRIL 22, 2018

As we hear the opening line of today’s first reading, taken from Acts 4:8, which reads: “Peter, filled with

the Holy Spirit…” do we realize that we too, like Peter, are filled with the Holy Spirit? Do we realize that

like Peter our lives have been changed by the Holy Spirit? Before receiving the Holy Spirit, Peter and

the apostles were like milk toast, weak and afraid. Once they received the Holy Spirit they became

empowered, not only to proclaim, but to live out their belief in the Risen Jesus.

This afternoon Bishop Lawrence Persico will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation upon several

young men and women from various parishes. It should give us time to reflect on our own reception of

the Sacrament of Confirmation. Many of us may remember that we received a gentle tap of the face to

remind us of the possible hardships that we may face in living out our faith, but that we were called to be tough enough to

stick it out and live our faith. Others may think of it as a graduation ceremony indicating that we have learned all we can

about our faith and now we have a PHD in our faith. We received the gift of the Holy Spirit first in the Sacrament of Baptism

and now the fullness of the Holy Spirt in the Sacrament of Confirmation is ours.

We know from Scripture that the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles on

Pentecost Sunday in the form of tongues of fire. That is the best description of the Holy

Spirit. Just as fire both purifies and breaks through the darkness; so does the Holy

Spirit, so that we may see the truth and live the truth. The Holy Spirit continually

reminds us to live and love as Jesus did. The Holy Spirit reminds us that each day we

are growing in our personal relationship with our God (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

So, today, as we pray for those who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, let us

pray also for our self that we may continue to accept the role of the Holy Spirit in our

life. Like Peter, may we remember that we are filled with the Holy Spirit.

I want to take this time to personally thank Bishop Persico for celebrating the

Sacrament with us today. God Bless, Fr. Ray

CALLING EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS

St. Francis’ 8 am Sunday mass and Chap-el Ridge Sunday communion are in need of more available ministers. Any ministers who attend this mass, please consider being add-

ed to our scheduling. 3 of our current ministers are not able to serve for the upcoming future, making it difficult to cover all our needs. Please contact Craig Cuthbertson who schedules for St. Francis or call the parish office and we will pass along your information to him.

Likewise, St. Bernard is in need of EMs for both the 5:15 Saturday evening and the 10 am Sunday Masses. Several of our ministers are unavailable and again, this makes it very difficult to fill all the needs of the Parish. Con-tact Kathy Howe, who schedules for St. Bernard, or the parish office at 362-6825 for further information.

If you are interested in becoming a Eu-charistic Minister for mass ministry or nursing home ministry, please call the parish office at 362-6825 for information.

NOTICE TO ST. FRANCIS PARISHIONERS

The CSA assessment from the Diocese is a bill that has to be paid just like your gas or electric bill. This year’s St. Francis assessment is $28,275 to be paid in quarterly in-stallments of $7,068. The first installment is due April 30th. To date we have received only $6,905 for CSA. This is $164 less than needed. We do NOT HAVE THE OPTION of not paying this installment. The deficit will come out of the St. Francis General Account.

FAMILY LIFE

The apostles were afraid of Jesus until he ate with them and they touched him. In your family, the ordinary acts of eating together, touching, embracing not only confirm our love for each other, but also celebrate God’s presence in your family. These ‘ordinary’ moments contain the ‘Extraordinary.”

GOOD SHEPHERD COLLECTION This weekend all parishes and missions in the Diocese of Erie are taking a special col-lection to support the needs of our retired Diocesan priests.

This special collection on Good Shep-herd Sunday will assist those dedicated

priests in the Erie Diocese who are elderly, seriously ill or incapacitated, and in need of supplementary assis-tance for expenses such as non-insured medical costs, nursing home and long-term care assistance.

Our diocesan website – www.eriercd.org contains lists with the residence of our retired priests, their birthday and anni-versary date of ordination to priesthood. May we suggest sending a priest who has touched your life a note or card sometime this year letting him know you still remember him. Consider adopting one of our priests as a prayer part-ner and pray for them and send an occasional note.

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

St. Bernard School and REP 3rd grade students will be making their First Com-munion at a special mass at 1 pm at St. Bernard Church next Sunday, May 6th.

Come celebrate this sacrament with them.

NOTE: ALL FIRST COMMUNICANTS

AND PARENTS

A mandatory practice and parent meeting will be held

after the 10 am mass at St. Bernard on Sunday April 29.

Please meet in the Fr. Gallina Social Center.
