5 From the Pastor
My Fellow Christians,
It’s been about a week now since Msgr. Ken Schaefer has been laid to rest. I’m glad his suffering is over but I miss my friend.
Fr. Ken was the vocation director when I entered the diocese. He was also pastor of St. Michael’s in Paderborn, a tiny hamlet consisting of the parish and a bar next door.
When I was newly ordained, my first assignment was at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Herrin. I had arrived there one month before Fr. Ken came. When he arrived in September, he was like a whirlwind. Changes in the parish were happening so fast the people couldn’t keep up with it all. Fr. Ken was on a mission. His biggest mission was evangelization. We had record groups of folks entering the Church through the RCIA the three years I was there and it continued on like that for many years. Spreading the Good News gave a life, a vibrancy or energy to him that propelled him on in all of his ministry.
In my first three years of priesthood at Herrin, Fr. Ken would often drill into my head the following: Brian, never stay at a parish more than 10 years. It’s not good for the parish and it’s not good for you. I was always confounded by the fact that Fr. Ken stayed at Herrin 26 years! Every now and then I would challenge him on what he told me over and over again. He would just smile and say, “Extenuating circumstances,” with a sheepish grin on his face.
Fr. Ken was my mentor as a newly ordained priest. I remember one day sitting in my office, trying to get some work done and I kept getting interrupted by phone calls and people dropping in my office. I remember blurting out loud “How can I get anything done with all these interruptions?” Fr. Ken heard me and came to my office and said, “Brian, diocesan priesthood is a priesthood of nothing but interruptions.” He was right. Interruptions don’t bother me anymore and his words have helped me to become more flexible.
Fr. Ken will be known for many things: the beard he would grow in honor of a saint starting the day after Christmas and keeping it until Holy Thursday, his trademark scarves he would wear throughout the winter, his energy that seemed boundless, and his building of the new school to name a few. What I will remember most is that he lived for the Gospel and shared it with as many people as he could. His love for God and God’s people emanated from his soul.
Now he enjoys the Kingdom with his parents, sister, and all those parishioners he ministered to in his life who have gone before him. No suffering. No pain. Just joy and peace. Where he has gone, we hope to follow.

A meeting was held by the Spaghetti Dinner Commit-
tee and, due to COVID, the decision was made to can-
cel the dinner for this year. We know this
is very disappointing but for everyone’s
safety we felt this was the best decision.
The committee will meet again later in
the year to discuss the possibility of having it in the
spring.

GOSPEL MEDITATION
July 26, 2020 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time
A single mother who has a child with special needs works two jobs and sacrifices much of her own pleasures in order to be avail-able for her son. Being the best mother possible is important to her and brings her joy. We are willing to make great and often heroic sacrifices for those people and things that matter most to us. Unless there is something of obvious importance to us in our immediate path, we can easily approach life in a more haphazard and chaotic way. We jump from one thing to another, respond-ing to whatever it is that is competing for our attention at that moment. When everything is important, nothing is important.
If we do not wear the right pair of glasses, we can get all too easily caught up in the superficial stuff and neglect paying attention to the things that really matter. The kingdom of God is like the pearl of great price that is worth selling everything for so that it can be obtained. Based on where I invest my time and energy each day, I really wonder whether I am serving God’s kingdom or my own. Have you ever considered tracking how you spend your time? You may be surprised! We allow our agendas to set the clock of our lives. We forget that joy and a true sense of purpose are not going to be found in following that timepiece. Joy is the expression of the happiness that is discovered when living in the kingdom of God. When our agenda matches God, not only do we leap for joy but God leaps with delight as well. Our well-being is what matters most to God.
Can you imagine God delighting in you? It is easy to deaden our senses to the whole reality of God and the joy that living the Gospel can bring. The demands of secular life and the agendas competing for our attention can quickly do that. We can get tired and spiritually apathetic. But if we can see our way through all of the conflicting voices and hear the voice of God, we can redis-cover our zeal and passion and redirect our efforts. When we begin to see as God sees, we can rise each day and notice what really needs our attention and embrace it with exuberance. Be careful, though. It may not be what we originally had on our list. Responding to it, however, will be worth putting everything else aside.
