TWENTY SIXTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME: UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL This weekend again we want to share bread at the same table as three parishes coming together as one at our two worship sites of St. Ann and St. James. On Thanksgiving Day, people come from NEAR and FAR as one family to share a meal and camaraderie. This weekend and more yet to come, we join together to share a meal (Eucharist) of Thanksgiving as ONE family. One family that supports each other. One family with different gifts that we ought to bring to the table to build this community. In our first reading this weekend, a young man approaches Moses to inform him that Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp. Joshua, who is Moses’ aide, encourages Moses to stop these men. Moses responds, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people of the Lord were prophets! Would that the Lord might bestow His spirit on them all!” Essentially, Moses is telling his men to stop being jealous that others too have the gift of prophecy bestowed on them from the Lord. A similar situation occurs in our Gospel as John tells Jesus about someone driving out demons in His name. John explains that he tried to prevent him since this man doesn’t follow them. Jesus responds by saying, “Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in My name who can at the same time speak ill of Me. For whoever is not against us is for us.” Eldad, Medad, and the man driving out demons were all doing the work of God. They had been entrusted with a gift and used it to glorify the Lord. Joshua and John should have responded in joy and appreciation for another’s gifts and talents. We, in these two worship sites of ONE Church, ought to look at each other as blessed to have more gifted people from these unified churches. If we apply this scenario to our modern-day lives, we might find it extremely relatable. We oftentimes look at another’s strengths as our weakness, whether it be in parish life, in the workforce, or even in our own families. We are left with a bitter heart and a negative attitude when we become jealous of another. And when we view others in this light, we not only diminish their good works but also overlook the gifts God has given to them and us. The Gospel makes a number of important and very practical points. Though these were addressed originally to the leaders in the community, they have relevance for all disciples of Jesus. The apostles came upon a man, as mentioned above, not of their company, who was healing people in the name of Jesus. They tried to stop him. Why? Because they were jealous of their spe-cial relationship with Jesus. We remember the narrow attitudes we had towards Christians of other denomination prior to Vatican II. But Jesus said to not stop him. The fact that he was acting in His name meant that he was not against them. Thus, Jesus gave them a lesson in openness and tolerance. All our official prayers are said, and all the sacraments are administered in the name, that is, in the power of Jesus. But Catholics have no monopoly on Jesus. Some people are threatened by the gifts or achievements of oth-ers. If only they had a more open attitude, they would find them-selves enriched rather than diminished by those gifts. The person who is different from me does not diminish me but enriches me. God bestows his gifts freely. Our responsibility is to welcome those gifts wherever they appear. Jesus said that anyone who gave the little ones even a cup of cold water would be rewarded.

The “cup of cold water” is a symbol of the small kind deed. Few of us are given the chance to perform great deeds. But the chance to give a cup of water can come our way several times in the course of a day. Mother Teresa once said, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” A small act of kindness can turn winter into summer at least brief-ly for another person. Deeds don't have to be big in order to be of help and comfort to the person for whom they are done. They just have to have a certain quality. That quality is warmth. All deeds which come from the heart have this warmth. Then Jesus deals with the sin of scandal — causing others to sin. Whether we are aware of it or not, we are stumbling blocks in the path of others, or steppingstones for them on the road to salvation. God wants us to be steppingstones for one another. Unfortunately, sometimes we are a scandal, that is, a stumbling block, to another person. You are a scandal to me when you are unkind or unjust in the way you treat me. You make me feel small. You damage my self-confidence. You are a scandal if you sow the seeds of division in our family of faith due to unfounded gossip about others. You are a scandal to me when you fail to understand my weak-ness, mistakes, and sins, and write me off as a result of them. When you condemn me, you make me feel that I am evil. You are a scandal to me when you humiliate me because I do not live up to your expectations. You hurt my pride and damage my self-image. You are a scandal to me when you keep me down or hold me back. When you grab the limelight, I am forced to retreat to the shadows and made to feel inferior. You are a scandal to me when you exclude me or ignore me. You make me feel a stranger and an outsider. You are a scandal to me when you heap unjust criticism on me and sour me with your own cynicism. You tear down my ideals and destroy my dreams. You are a steppingstone to me when you make demands on me, are challenging, not to hurt me, but to help me to grow and to develop my potential. You are a steppingstone to me when you accept me, though others reject me. You are a steppingstone to me when you refuse to join the mob and throw the stone of accusation and judgment at me when I sin. You are a steppingstone to me when you forgive me. You liber-ate me from my past, and I am free to move forward again. You are a steppingstone to me when you understand me and listen to me. You are a steppingstone to me when you employ me and pay me a just wage. If you have done any of these things for me, you are a light to me in my darkness. You are a signpost to me in my moments of doubt. You are a bridge over troubled waters. You make it easi-er for me to enter the kingdom of heaven. Jesus said if you gave me as much as a cup of cold water, you would be rewarded for it. But you have done much more than that. You have led me to your own well and shared it with me, especially those times when you have promoted unity in our uni-fied church.

Proclaim the Wonder of God The gift of the Spirit is given freely, not according to hu-man expectations, but according to the generosity of God. Joshua wants Moses to stop Eldad and Medad from prophesying in the camp, when they were not with the others as the spirit was bestowed on them. Moses, so close to God’s mind in the matter, wishes everyone could possess the spirit of God and proclaim it to the nations.

Psalm 19 celebrates the perfection of God’s law, and how it brings joy and delight. It is better than the finest gold or the sweetest honey. Moreover, God gives the wisdom of the prophets to everyone, especially the simple and lowly ones, even to children. It is the “little ones” who pro-claim the wonder of God to all. Copyright © J. S.
