PARISH NURSES CORNER ~ FLU SEASON
Due to minimal response to the annual flu clinic at St Ann's,
the parish nurses have decided not to offer flu shots this
year. We do, however, strongly encourage our parishioners
to obtain the flu vaccine. There are multiple locations offer-
ing this service without an appointment. Check your local
pharmacy, the municipal health department and your Dr's
office. The flu shot is a safe and effective way to protect you
from influenza, which is a serious respiratory illness. This is
recommended for everyone from 6 months of age and older.
Bishop Bootkoski Celebrates Mass to open the Year of Faith

as principal celebrant and homilist at a Mass to begin the
diocese’s celebration of the Year of Faith at the Cathedral of St.
Francis of Assisi, Metuchen on Friday, November 9, 2012 at 7
p.m.. The Mass will be the first of many activities that the
diocese and parishes will hold as part of the worldwide
celebration of the Year of Faith. For information on the Year of

MAY 13, 2012 ~ 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ MOTHER’S DAY
Thoughts For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers,
It isn’t very often that a child is put center stage to speak to
powerful people, but this happened in February 2011 when a
thirteen-year-old German boy was invited to address the United
Nations General Assembly in New York. Felix Finkbeiner was invited to deliver a speech to open the UN’s International Year of
Forests. Passionate about addressing climate change, he had
organised a tree-planting programme in his country as a way for
young people to tackle the problem. Within three years his project
had planted one million trees in Germany and he found himself at
the helm of a global network of child activists with the aim of
mitigating climate change by reforesting the planet.
In his eloquent speech at the UN – which has had thousands
of hits on the internet – he told the UN delegates, ―I don’t have
much hope that adults will do something and so we children will do
it ourselves.‖ He was determined that children should have a voice.
His reasoning was straightforward: ―For most adults the future
seems to mean twenty, thirty or even forty years, but for us children
the year 2100 could still be in our lifetime. For adults it is an
academic question if sea levels rise three inches or seven metres by
the end of this century, but for us children it is a question of
survival.‖ Felix showed not only what one inspirational person can
do, but how proactive the world’s children can be in building a
sustainable future.
In today’s Gospel Lesson, to emphasise his own vision of
leadership, Jesus gives his disciples the example of paying attention
to a child. In ancient cultures, children were the least important of people. People had children to serve them and provide financial
security in their elderly years. They had many children because the
mortality rate for children under sixteen years of age was around
fifty per cent. Childhood was a precarious time in the ancient world.
To serve someone as lowly as a child took an act of extreme
humility. It is not the only time in St. Mark’s Gospel where the
disciples are taken aback by Jesus’ insistence that loving, protective
concern for children is a key pillar in his social program. The
received notions of hierarchy and power are reversed. The first
becomes the last – a person with no status at all is suddenly given
top priority. The disciples have seen the mighty power of Jesus at work and they believe he is the Christ, and yet here he is
emphasising his concern for little children, who are on the lowest
rank of the social ladder, devoid of status, power and rights.
The disciples are told to review their notions of themselves,
each other and other people, and revise their relationships
accordingly. They must stop quibbling over who is the most important among them, because old hierarchical ideas are no longer
important. Jesus uses the small child as a benchmark of leadership.
Whoever welcomes one like a child welcomes Christ himself. The
main priority now is to put themselves at the service of others.
Yet isn’t it so easy to sweep the concerns of children and
other vulnerable people off our agendas? Who today is the ―child‖
of whom Jesus spoke? Whom are Christians supposed to serve?
The follower of Jesus is called to respect the rights of all children
and this means helping those internationally who are denied water,
food, adequate shelter and peace. It also means discerning who are
the vulnerable young people in our own society – perhaps those
from low-income homes or those denied the education and
employment that they would like to choose in life. Young people
are to be supported and affirmed. That is one of the reasons we have
Catholic Schools.
We Christians are called to show hospitality and respect to all
those who have low social status: the social outcast, the sinner, those
who are sick and vulnerable. It takes wisdom and a generosity of
heart to discern how one can serve these different groups, but Jesus
makes clear that leadership should mean serving everybody, not just
an elite, and esteeming those that society regards as unimportant.
Like the disciples we are very success-oriented, and we measure success in terms of comparing ourselves with others. Jesus
challenges us today to develop childlike qualities of energy, trust,
hope, and a love of cooperating with one another. Whether we are
nine years old or ninety-nine, the message of Jesus also challenges
us all to become young at heart and to love and to nurture our young
people.
In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—visit them if
you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered
from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be pleased
with us!

Dear Friends of St. Ann School,
Our fourth defining characteristic of a Catholic School states
“Catholic school education is rooted in the conviction that human
beings have a transcendental destiny and that education for the
whole person must form the spiritual, intellectual, physical,
psychological, social, moral, aesthetic and religious capacities of
each child.” That is a mouthful of words but it boils down to
educating the whole child.
The St. Ann’s curriculum covers each of the areas
mentioned. The experience of each child exceeds the courses they
take. They interact daily with a faculty and staff mindful of each
child as a whole person destined by God for a unique purpose
that we prepare children to discover and complete. This shows
itself in the spiritual exercises, Masses, and devotionals that
students practice. It is the base of our discipline, routines, and co-
curricular activities. Our service orientation drives the practical
application along with the stellar example of the adults in the St.
Ann School community.
Finally, our counterparts in other educational systems slim if not
altogether cut opportunities for the arts. St. Ann’s maintains that
art and music are vehicles of expression for the soul. They are an
integral part of the curricular experience at every grade
level.
Next week we will explore how our school fulfills the Catholic
worldview characteristic.
God bless you,
Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF; Principal

2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal ~ Christ Alive in His People
This weekend, we observe Catechetical Sunday and recognize
Catechists and Teachers as Agents of the New Evangelization.
Catechists have a crucial role since they instruct our people so they
can, in turn, go out and evangelize. The Office for Catechesis
strives to make lifelong faith formation central in all parishes
throughout the Diocese of Metuchen by providing all people, at
every age and stage of life, opportunities to experience God’s love
through a growing knowledge of Jesus and the Gospel message.
This is just one of the ministries supported by your gift to the
Bishop’s Annual Appeal. Please prayerfully consider making a
pledge today.
Rosary Altar Society - Installation of New Members New Members are being installed on Wednesday, October 3 at
6:30pm in the Church. Rosary will be recited after installations & a
