8 JUNE. 2014 ~ PENTECOST SUNDAY—THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I’m sure we all know that last summer, Pope Francis

celebrated World Youth Day on Copacabana beach in Rio de

Janeiro, Brazil, with three and a half million young people,

and priests and bishops from all over the world. Flags were

waved, people sang, new friends were made and gifts

exchanged. I think the young people celebrated their faith

with enthusiasm and joy; there was a carnival atmosphere.

Many made great sacrifices to be present. Newspapers

reported a number of stories: one young woman spoke of a

three-day bus journey from Bolivia and another man told of

many hours travelling from Tonga by boat and plane. The

papers also reported that the young Brazilians welcomed

people with warmth and the request for a photograph. There

are online clips of scenes from the beach and even bishops

swaying and dancing to the rhythm of the music.

This uplifting and inspiring experience captured for a

moment the reality that the Gospel has spread to the ends of

the earth: from Jerusalem to Galilee, to the Arabian states

where Filipinos and people from Goa and India live, beyond

Europe and westwards further than the Americas, beyond

New Zealand to Tonga and the Polynesian islands, through

Africa to its southernmost tip. The young people celebrated

one faith, one Church, one Lord. Pope Francis, in his humble

yet powerfully charismatic style, urged the young people to

go forth as missionaries to spread God’s word and God’s

promises to all the people they would meet. Since the

celebration could not be held at the flooded airfield, which

had been called Campus Fidei—the field of faith—they

became the field of faith on the beach; there, the Lord was at

work sowing his seeds to build his Church.

After the crucifixion, the disciples of Jesus were

afraid and many ran away. They struggled to believe in the

resurrection and the promises that had been opened up, the

promise that the risen Christ was present to them now and

that they would share in the hope of eternal life, forever and

ever. They would know unending joy in the presence of God

if they followed their Master to the end, even to the cross.

When Jesus appeared to them, having been raised from the

dead, he always offered them two gifts—the gift of peace and

the gift of forgiveness and mercy. He strengthened them

with the words, “Do not be afraid.”

The offer of God’s mercy that leads to new life, is

celebrated at Pentecost as we also celebrate the birthday of

the Church. With sins forgiven, we are restored into new

relationships with the Father and with one another. God

gives the members of the Church the gifts to build up the

Church and serve others in need. Each of us has a particular

call and, in the world of Blessed John Henry Newman, a

“definite service” for the Lord.

Pope Francis at Rio offered the young people three

ways in which they could live out their faith: by prayer,

through the sacraments and by helping the other person in

need. These are simple yet profound truths, which remind us

that our lives are to be lived in the power of the Spirit.

Like the young people on the beach at Rio, we are

sent out on this feast as missionaries of Christ. We are sent

to share our hope with others. The Pope spoke about the

young people making a noise about their faith, in the way

that only young people can make a noise! We are sent out

from Mass each Sunday, into our families, our workplaces,

our schools, to share the hope of our faith with others, not by

preaching, but by example and witness of our lives. There

are times when it is right to speak loudly about our faith,

even if we are opposed or ridiculed for the sake of truth. At

other times, we do this through love when actions speak

louder than words.

The questions we should ask ourselves are: can I

share my hope with another person? If not, then pray to the

Holy Spirit for the gift of courage. Do I have to make a

difficult decision? Ask the Holy Spirit for the gift of

wisdom. Am I caring for a sick member of the family and

feeling that life is impossible? Ask from the Holy Spirit the

gift of understanding and patience. The Holy Spirit is our

“delighted guest”, in the words of today’s Sequence, and

touches our hearts to give us comfort.

In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely—

visit them if you can. Please remember to pray for all who

have wandered from the Faith and all who have died. Also,

pray for the souls of all the faithful departed of our Parish

Family.

May God always be pleased with us!

Monsignor Michael

Our Scripture Lessons remind us:

...that the Holy Spirit transforms our lives, changes us from being fearful to being courageous, and calls each person in a

particular way;

...that prayer, sacraments and helping others are ways to living our faith in the world;

...that we are sent as missionaries to share our hope with others by being constant in faith and generous in love;

...and, that we are called to make a noise about our faith, whether by words or by love.

May God always be pleased with us. Amen!

St. Ann’s 7th grade classroom is in need of a DVD/VCR, If

someone is willing to donate one, please let us know.

FESTA

St. Ann’s Festa Committee is asking

volunteers to bake for our Cake Wheel.

Cakes, cookies, brownies, or sweet

breads are welcomed but should not

contain any icing or creams since they

will perish outside on the evenings they

are displayed. Please call the rectory at

908-725-1008 if you are interested in

baking or have any question.

The death of a family member, friend, or co-worker is always a difficult time and we ask “why?, why did God take our loved one from us?” Sometimes this happens suddenly, sometimes it is drawn out, and very draining. No matter how death comes, we realize it is final. We. as a parish family, have all experienced death and are able to understand. There is a program that reaches out to families at this time called “Lazarus Ministry.” Lazarus Ministry is scheduled to start at St. Ann’s this fall. Our abilities will depend on the number of volunteers who respond to our call. For more information or to Volunteer please contact: Dottie Pacifico (908-722-3137) or Toni Randazzo (908-707-8990. ♦ - Visit the bereaved immediately following the death.

Help plan the funeral liturgy (with the guidance of parish priest and deacons). Offer to stay at the bereaved home during the funeral. Follow-up with regularly placed phone calls. Give literature about normal grief reactions. Loan resource books and/or videos about dealing with loss. Plan a memorial service in May. Plan an All Souls’ Day Mass. Facilitate an on-going support group. Pray with the bereaved.

ALWAYS listen with a compassionate heart, provide hope for the future, and present opportunities to remember the past.

8 JUNE 2014 PENTECOST SUNDAY

The St. Ann Parish Nurses recently had a presentation from Sumantha

Banerjee from the Somerset County Health Department.

The topic was “ Preparing makes sense, get ready now!”

We need to have plans in place when disaster strikes

whether it is the result of fire, flood, snowstorm or an

attack. Be prepared with at least 3 days worth of emergency supplies.

Get a kit of emergency supplies. This should include H2O, food, medi-

cine, clothes, flashlight. Make a plan for what you will do in an emer-

gency. Where will you meet up with family members? Do you have

contact information for family & friends? Where will you shelter? Be

informed about what will happen. Go to www.ready.gov to learn more

about emergencies or potential threats. Get involved in preparing your

community. You may want to get involved with the Citizen Corps in

your town or county—visit their website: www.citizencorps.com. They

will help prepare & train volunteers in the community .

Are you looking for a way to serve your parish of

St. Ann? Do you have a talent that you would enjoy shar-

ing with the parishioners? Do you enjoy photography?

Would you like to share this talent with others? If so, you

have the opportunity to do both!

The Bulletin Committee is looking for photographers to

take photos that will reflect the happenings, at St. Ann’s

over the year. Years from now, when we look back upon

the days and events held in the parish, it will be the photos

that will aid our memories and help to recall the activities,

events, and functions of our parish.

The committee is praying that one or several will step for-

ward and take advantage of the opportunity to offer their

time and talent that is needed and at the same time aid our

fine bulletin publication.

I’d like to end with a quote from Berenice Abbot,

“Photography helps people to see”. If interested in the

position of photographer for the events of the parish, please

WEEK AHEAD

Dear Friends of St. Ann School,

I am delighted to inform you that

the 8th grade student names listed on the front cover of this

week’s bulletin have graduated from our school on

Wednesday, June 4. We are proud of each and every one of

them. These students were inducted into the alumni

association earlier in the week. We know that they will

work hard in high school and will some day return to St.

Ann’s with even more wisdom and skills.

I was reading about the beauty and necessity of

having and working toward a worthwhile goal. For human

beings, goals need to be far reaching. Our goals motivate

us; give us purpose, and a reason to get up in the morning.

They bring us peace and fulfillment. Depression easily

creeps into our souls when our goals are too small. If our

goal is to graduate college, when that occurs at the ripe old

age of 25 or so, there is nothing else to stir us into action.

If our goal is to make a million dollars, that negates a bunch

of other goals. When this is achieved, we are left with a

soon to dwindle million and then what?

Our graduates know, as did St. Augustine who

preached this message, that our goal can be nothing less

than God himself. Not that we want to possess Him, but

that we want to be able to live united to Him forever. This

goal will occupy us all the days of our life. It will make life

worth living for us and for those around us.

We send the graduating class of 2014 off into the

world of high school. We wish them God’s choicest

blessings. We pray that their dreams for themselves and

God’s dreams for them come true. Know that I speak for

the whole parish when I tell our graduates that we are

always here for them. In the words of a famous fictional

TV character, “Live long and prosper.” Better yet, love

well and live for eternity. Your prayers, sacrifices, example

and more contributed to this success.

Thank you to all involved in bringing this year’s

class to this

God bless you,

Sr. Mary Klersey, MPF

Congratulations to graduates
