He sought them out in their weakness, ignored the doors they thought would keep him out, Yes, he was there and there to speak of forgiveness and above all to give them the gift of the Spirit: the Spirit of the Second Chance, the Spirit of a love greater than their shame, a Spirit that would break down doors and send them out, now as a community of wounded, forgiven healers, to preach the Good News of God’s love. Shut and open doors. The disciples of Jesus were hiding in fear behind closed and locked doors, shutting out the rest of the hostile world, a world for them full of suspicion and accusation. They felt better, safer, huddled

Pastoral Perspectives

Diocesan Missions Sunday

Today, on Diocesan Missions Sunday, we are filled with renewed faith as the Holy Spirit comes upon us and calls each one to move beyond our daily concerns, important as they are, to help the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sis-ters of Mercy bring the faith to God’s people in Brazil and Chile.

Bishop Salvatore Matano reminds us of our strong and proud mission tradition. The support of our Diocesan Missionaries by the Church of Rochester is a great piece of our history.

May we as partners of Christ help to build God’s king-dom by our prayers and financial gift today.

Next Sunday, May 27, 2018, is the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. The readings will be

Deuteronomy 4:3234,3940; Romans 8:1417 and Matthew 28:1620. Next Sunday’s Scripture readings shed light on ‘who God is’ and ‘who we are.’ In our Old Testament reading from Deuteronomy, Moses reminds the people of Israel that their experience of God is unique. Unlike people around them at the time who believed in many gods, they have been introduced to the one, true God. God has spoken to them through Moses and has rescued them from slavery in Egypt. Moses says “Did anything so great ever happen before…did a people ever hear the voice of God…as you did, and live? …or did any god venture to go and take a nation for himself… .” Moses points to the personal, caring relationship they’ve been invited to share with God, and encourages them to be faithful to that relationship by keeping God’s commandment. By the time Paul writes his letters 2000+ years later, God has interacted with people not only through the prophets, but directly, in the person of Jesus Christ. And, after the Ascension, God remains in and among human beings in the person of the Holy Spirit. Jesus has told us, explicitly, how God feels about human beings; we are to consider ourselves children of God, invited to call God by the intimate and familiar title, Abba (Father/Daddy.) It is the Holy Spirit in and among us who enables us to call God “Abba.” More so, Jesus instructed us to go and invite others into this relationship of love by baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Our belief in the Holy Trinity is the result of truth that has been revealed to us by God. It is primarily through Jesus himself that we know of God as “father” and Jesus as “son.” It is Jesus who promised to send his own Spirit to be our advocate and counselor. Our understanding of the Holy Trinity has developed over time through the inspiration of God and the experience of God’s faithful people as they have come to know Jesus and have experienced the presence of his Spirit at work in their individual lives and within the community of the faithful. The Feast of the Most Holy Trinity invites us to reflect on where and how we experience the Father, Son and Spirit, and to recognize our own loving actions as participation in the triune life of God that we have been invited to share.

REMINDER

If you attend another local Catholic church on the weekend, you can place your Cathedral Community envelope in their collection basket and your offering will be returned to us.

Volunteers NeededNo Experience Required

As in previous years our “Grounds Crew” is comprised of volunteers, each of whom “adopts” a section of the property and performs ongoing light maintenance on it throughout Spring, Summer and Fall. Volunteers are responsible for weeding, trimming, and keeping their area free of trash. There’s no mowing or heavy pruning and no special tools are needed. You are asked to provide your own equipment (gloves, rakes, trash bags, etc.) and you can schedule the work at your own convenience. Most of us find a couple times a month are adequate to do the job.

Experienced Master Gardener with the Cornell Cooperative Extension will provide any training or advise as necessary.

If you’d like to volunteer or have questions, contact Jim Martel (7230321 or email [email protected]).

Even if you’ve volunteered in past years, contacting us for this year will be extremely helpful.

Knights of Columbus

We continue to collect box tops for education in support of our two schools, Holy Cross and Nazareth Elementary. Your box tops and monetary donations are greatly appreciated and we thank you for your continued support.

Nazareth families also collect aluminum can flip tops these donations may be placed in the plastic jug under the Treasure Chest. These eventually go to the Ronald McDonald House.

Sick, Infirmed and Homebound

Because of HIPAA laws, the only way the Parish Staff learns of parishioners who are ill or infirmed is if the parishioner, a family member or a friend notifies the office. If you, or someone you know is ill,

hospitalized or moved to a nursing facility or family member’s home, please let the Cathedral Main Office know.

If you/they are unable to attend Mass, please contact a parish visitor to arrange to receive communion.

If a family member has gone to hospice care or needs healing prayers, the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick can be administered by our priest. Please call the office, at 2543221, we are here to serve you!
