It is hard to believe that by the time you read this column, winter will be half over given that as I write, the New Year hasn’t even begun. With that in mind, let me wish you a heartfelt, but belated, Happy New Year. I hope this year will bring peace joy and prosperity to all. Continuing on my theme of increasing participation, one of my goals for the Section for 2017 is to improve communications with our members. The Catalyst has served our Section well for over 100 years. It is a living and ongoing organism for communicating and ar-

chiving information. A perusal of back Catalyst issues provides a brief history of the Section as well as the evolution of chemical enterprise in this region. Print copies going back to 1916 are being digitized and preserved for posterity.

Over a year ago Marge Matthews, our Communications Committee Chair, expressed a desire to step down from that role. Marge has expertly assembled the information for the Catalyst for many years and has continued to do so as we have looked for someone to step up to this role. We owe Marge our thanks and appreciation for her many years of service. With that being said, I am asking that as you read this column, you consider taking on the challenge of working with the Catalyst staff and Chairing the Communications Committee. If you are interested, please contact me or Krista Leary at the Section Office.

The Catalyst is supported not only by the Communications Committee, but also by an Editor-in-Chief, Robin Davis; an Advertising Manager, Vince Gale; and a Webmaster, Matthew Bodek. However, in this era of electronic communication via social media, we need additional mecha-nisms that can distribute information more immediately and continuously. Last year through the work of Alan Heldon, Secretary, the Section received an Innovative Program Grant (IPG) to purchase additional equipment for electronic communication. In order to make the best use of this equipment, we need to consider ways to promote the Section’s activities through social me-dia, by increasing our web presence, and by improving our public relations. Please let us know if you have interest and expertise in any of these areas. The Executive Committee, Board of Di-rectors, and Committee Chairs will be more than happy to welcome and work with you.

Finally, I want to remind you to join us on February 23rd, at the Philadelphia Distilling Compa-ny for a tour of their new Fishtown facility and a tasting of their specialty beverages. The even-ing will include light refreshments as well as congenial interaction. Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Edgar Fahs Smith Memorial lecture at the University of Pennsylvania on March 23rd. I hope the New Year has started well for you, and I look forward to seeing you at our Section events.

Respectfully, Deborah Cook

Reflections on Science and Jewish Tradition

Speaker: Roald Hoffmann Date: Sunday, February 26, 2017 Time: 7:00 – 8:30 PM Location: Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth Synagogue (AKSE) 4412 Washington Blvd. Wilmington, DE 19802 Registration: Not required. Free and open to the public. More information: Contact Mark Wagman at (302) 475-8351 or [email protected]. Abstract: “That science and religion only contend, or that they occupy separate compartments in our minds, one unrelated to the other—these are both such impoverishing views. Scientific knowledge, aes-thetics, and faith cohabit. They speak to one another in the human soul—yes, sometimes their dialogue is uneasy. But it is their intertwined voices which shape true human understanding.” In their book, Old Wine, New Flasks: Reflections on Science and Jewish Tradition, Roald Hoffmann and Shira Leibowitz Schmidt further represent “true human understanding” as a jigsaw puzzle, with the pieces widely dis-persed, and they proceed to assemble them—some from science and some from religion. In his lecture Hoffmann explores this metaphor: “The religious setting is that of Jewish tradition. The science is mainly the central one, chemistry. Some stories will be told, digressive the way real life is, of how science, religion and art look at pieces of the world. One such story will feature an ancient pig-ment, Tyrian purple, which also played a ritual role in Jewish religious practice. And in an American contribution to world culture, blue jeans.” Hoffmann’s lecture is the kickoff event of a project at AKSE that seeks to engage science with Jewish tradition to illuminate the theme of Natural and Man-made. The theme itself was inspired by some of his writing, and part of his lecture will introduce the theme. In three subsequent events, on April 2, April 23 and May 7, the perspectives of science and Judaism will be developed and brought to bear on intriguing questions such as “Are humans a part of nature, or apart from nature?”, “How and why do we distinguish between the natural and the man-made?” and “Is natural ‘better’?” The project is sup-ported by a grant from Scientists in Synagogues, a program of Sinai and Synapses, and funded by the John Templeton Foundation. Biography: Born in 1937 in Zloczow, Poland (now Ukraine), Roald Hoffmann writes that he “came to a happy Jewish family in dark days in Europe.” Most of his family, including his father, were killed by the Nazis and their helpers. He survived along with his mother and a handful of relatives and, in 1949, came to the United States. Since 1965 Hoffmann has been at Cornell University, where he is now the Frank H. T. Rhodes Professor of Humane Letters Emeritus. A self-described “applied theoretical chem-ist,” he has received virtually all the honors of his profession, including the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1981, shared with Kenichi Fukui for the independent work of each on theories of the conservation of orbital symmetry in chemical reactions. Yet he is equally comfortable working across disciplines in a “land between science, poetry and philosophy.” Hoffmann is notable also for reaching out to the gen-eral public. He has published several poetry collections and plays. His book Chemistry Imagined ex-plores the creative and humanistic aspects of chemistry. He presented The World of Chemistry series on PBS and runs a monthly cabaret, Entertaining Science, in Greenwich Village.

The BioPharma Networking Group has dropped out of participating in the event due to funding concerns and the ChemPharma Professional Association remains and has ensured full commitment to the event and its success. ChemPharma has arranged for Allen Reitz of the Fox Chase Chemical Diversity Center, which is located at the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center in Doylestown, PA, to give informal comments about his company as well as the Pennsylvania Drug Discovery Institute, both located at the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Center. The event will also include introductions of ChemPharma and the Section as well as ample time for informal networking. Deb Cook and Joe Martino express the Section’s gratitude to Michael Chiappinelli and Bert Marchio of ChemPharma for assisting us in making this event possible. 2) Career Services is currently working with the ACS Princeton and Trenton Section for a multi-Section career event, with a tenta-tive date of April 22, 2017 with a venue to be determined. The event will feature the “Finding Your Pathway” ACS Career Pathways workshop followed by a panel discussion of representatives from the individual paths. Based on an assessed risk of displaced chem-ists in New Jersey and potential displacements in the Section’s territory, an assessment of requesting the involvement of ACS Na-tional for this workshop is currently being assessed in addition to grant funding. 3) The Career Club program will be revisited in 2017, with an appointment format to be utilized. The Career Club has been post-poned to support the Temple University College of Science and Technology Career Fair events in September and October of this year. E. PAGESTM, Kathy Shaginaw, [email protected] On November 5th the fall 2016 session of Philadelphia Areas Girls Enjoying Science™ (PAGES™) was held at Chestnut Hill College. The event brought together 134 girls from 32 schools with 56 volunteers for a day of science fun. The keynote speakers were Dr. Lyndsay Leal and Dr. Kaitlin Rosen. The next event is April 22, 2017. There being no additional business before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 5:42 PM. Respectfully submitted, Alan R. Heldon, Secretary, [email protected]
