From the rafters to the floor, our sanctuary
literally shook as the children from our
church and our community sang of their
love for Jesus at this year’s Vacation Bible
School Day Camp. It was an action-packed
week, allowing children to make new
friends, of all ages, and enjoy old ones.
Totally led by our talented Fortune Lake
counselors; Lillian, Ryan, Claudia, Kevin and
Hoku, our days were filled with fun, learning,
sharing, singing and games. Each day started
and ended with Chapel time -- highlighting
daily themes, scripture, and songs. Our
leaders guided us through small group Bible
studies, taught us daily arts and crafts, and
kept us moving with a wide variety of super-
fun activities. We are very fortunate to have
had these talented young folks come to OSL
to guide us through our week of VBS. We
want to give special thanks to:
All of you, at OSL, for supporting this
program with your prayers and finan-
cially, in the church budget

Pastor’s Link
In Jonathan Fisk’s book “Broken”, he defines
the 'Theology of prosperity' as: “The belief
that the way God feels about you is meas-
ured by how good our life is right now. The
"Prosperity gospel", then, is nothing more
than the worship of health and wealth.”
Most of us are familiar with the old funda-
mentalist health, wealth, success religion that
has been around for ages. It is a direct de-
scendant of the Pharisees. In this day and age
it can mainly be found on the TV. It is the
idea that God wants to bless you with mate-
rial wealth IF you have enough faith. And
how do we prove our faith? Of course, by
sending more money to the televangel-
ist. And if you do not have health and pros-
perity, then it is because YOU do not have
enough faith.
Now we may feel that because we are
solid Lutherans we are aware of this false
'works righteousness' teaching and thus we
are less susceptible to it. Yet we may be
more vulnerable to it than we realize. And
this is nothing new. In Jesus day it was a
commonly held belief by the religious lead-
ers that if you were healthy and wealthy
then you were obviously blessed by God.
Therefore the disciples were stunned
when Jesus stated; "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle
than a rich man to enter the Kingdom
of heaven.”
This throws the false 'prosperity gospel'
right out the window. Yet it seems to return
and persist somehow, implying that if you
were poor, or sick or afflicted in some way,
that you were under God’s judgment – that
you were 'steeped in sin'. This is witnessed
too in the Pharisees view of the man born blind. "Was it he, or his parents that sinned
for him to have been born blind?" Jesus an-
swers, "Neither".
Many different false theologies, false philoso-
phies and false teachings have come and
gone with the same basic idea that success
equals being blessed by God. That if things
are going well for you, then obviously God is
“smiling” upon you, blessing your efforts and
if not, well you better do something to fix it
and get it right because it is obviously your
fault. And many Christians struggle with this
understanding, wondering whether God
truly loves them or not. In contrast, Fisk
states in his book: "Against this sandy land
where storms will come and blow, authen-
tic Christianity stands firm as a house built
on the bedrock of Jesus Christ. This world
and all its decay, rot and love of money can-
not touch it, because it cannot understand
or surrender to Jesus Christ." Jesus Christ is
risen and He is the true treasure, kept in
heaven for you and for all people. In this
world we will face both hunger and plenty,
and BOTH will harm the body eventually,
but neither of them can touch the soul kept
safe in Christ. Christianity has never budged
from this truth because Christianity is not
about this world, it is about Jesus Christ and
the Kingdom of God.
Do you want to know how God feels about
you right now? Do you want an answer un-
touched by the sands of time and undimin-
ished by our greedy attempts to build
heaven out of this hell? Then believe His
words: "For God sent his Son into the
world not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through
Him." THAT is how God feels about you.
Through baptism you have been buried and
raised with Jesus the Son of God. Against all
of these fanatical lies about earthly wealth
being a blessing, God your Father has lifted
up the cross of Jesus. It is at the foot of that
cross that this world is turned on its
greedy, cursed, decaying head. It is there
that death is life; it is there that weakness is
strength; it is there that poverty is wealth
and affliction is prosperity. Jesus mocks
prosperity when He says; "Man shall not
live by bread alone, but by every Word
that proceeds from the mouth of God."
He left this world to His apostles with the
commission not to conquer the world, but
to preach that He has already conquered it
through the cross. No matter how big we
build our barns, we can only eat our bread
today. The secret of Christian contentment
is realizing that there will come a tomor-
row when we do not eat here at all, a
tomorrow when we shall dine in paradise.
That is having an eternal perspective. This
world will not last, it cannot last. We do
not find God either 'in' or 'of ‘ this world;
rather, through the action of the Holy
Spirit, Jesus finds us amid the greed and the
mud and the ashes. And He lifts us up in
His Name. Amen.
