From Your Pastor Part of the Problem,
or Part of the Solution
You have probably heard or maybe even used the phrase, “Monday morning quarterback.” This is used to describe a person who passes judgment on and criticizes something after an event. Receiving constructive criticism is something that has grown on me over the years, because I have come to learn and understand that when done with love and encouragement, criticism can help us grow and make us better. A conversation that I participated in on leadership, change, and criticism more than 15 years ago has stuck with me all these years. Our group leader said whenever there is a problem, we can be a part of the problem or we can be a part of the solution. If we are willing to share our criticisms, but are not willing to offer suggestions for improvement we become part of the
problem. To be a part of the solution we cannot only offer our criticism. We must be willing to offer ideas of how to make a situation better. To become part of the solution we also must be willing to offer our time, energy, imagination, love, and be willing to serve alongside one another in faith. Another way to talk about criticism is with how easy it can be to pass judgement on someone else. Judging someone on our perceptions of who we think the other is, or how the other behaves can cause us a lot of trouble. That is probably why Jesus had to say this about judging others in the Gospel of Matthew,
“Do not judge, so that you may not be judged.
For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get.
Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye,
but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor,
‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’
while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite,
first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck
out of your neighbor’s eye.”
When we only offer up our criticisms and judgements, we are only a part of the problem. I invite you to become part of the solution. Live out your faith by serving others with your time, energy, imagination, and love offering your gifts and ideas so that the kingdom of God can continue to grow in our church and around Kinston. Joyfully, Pastor Travis

Two New Memorials and Books
for Summer
Hoppity Frog by Emma Parrish is a creative “slide-and-seek book” for toddlers, and ABCs of Kindness by Samantha Berger is for children ages 2-5. Thank you, Myra Goodwin, for these beautiful and
thoughtful books given as a memorial to David Mills, a grandfather who enjoyed reading to children. Other books in the children’s section of the library worth noting are All the Children of the World by Helen Doss, Saying Good-bye, Saying Hello…When Your Family Is Moving by Michaelene Mundy, and Apostles, Jesus’ Special Helpers by Edmon L. Rowell, Jr. All the Children is similar to many of the memorial books in that it discusses diversity; Saying Good-bye, Saying Hello might help when a family move becomes necessary. Apostles, Jesus’ Special Helpers is part of the Biblearn Series that seeks to help children understand the importance of these assistants to Jesus. Embracing Heaven & Earth by Andrew Cohen “takes the reader on a journey of Self-discovery that reveals not only the liberating fact of our true nature but the way to live that truth in this world.” Cohen obviously gives the reader food for thought and reflection. Happy reading this summer!

Dear Church Family:
Hope all are having a great summer with finally some freedom to do things! The choir and music program have had a luncheon gathering already two times and plan to have two more before the summer is over. It has been wonderful to be together!
You have probably noticed that we have had more than one and even more than 2 singers in the gallery at recent services. Everyone in the gallery is always confirmed vaccinated and it will remain that way for a long time, perhaps forever! As the vaccination rate increases and the number of COVID cases decline we will be able to return to normal choir and music activities with confirmed vaccinated members. It is my hope to have the full choir and bell “normal schedule” when we start back in August. Congregational singing will start as soon as it is safe but unfortunately with the chances of congregation members not vaccinated this will still have to wait.
I am so thankful for everyone in this congregation. Everyone has been supportive and understanding and flexible as we navigate this pandemic. The choir and all those involved in music at First Presbyterian are simply the best: always doing their best and always in the most supportive and kind and thoughtful way. We continue to look forward to our regular weekly rehearsals and services with singing and praises possibly more fervent than ever! As soon as we are able to all sing in the congregation safely I am planning a hymn festival!
Sincerely:
JOB
