Hello Friends, Summertime is upon us, and if we think back to summers past, this one is uniquely different. It re-minds me of the little kid who dips his toe into the ocean waves. Trying to get a sense of what is in store for him or her. Is the water too rough? Is the sand shifting? Can I stand? Is the water too warm? Is the water too cold? And where is the safe place up on the beach? That is how many people are engaging in the summer so far. Just dipping our toes back in our old routines that have been significantly altered. Some of my friends have shared that they will not be back in restaurants to dine until social dis-tancing is not “a thing.” They will buy carry out meals but don’t feel comfortable with dining in close proximity to others. We have a talented Task Force for our reopening planning. I will share their names with you in this article. They’re asking good questions. They’re posing various health and safety scenarios that we can encounter. They’re looking at safety, cleansing and sanitation procedures. They’re ex-amining how to enter the building and not move in herds of people. How do we approach com-munion with minimal contact? How do we have an offering? We won’t use hymnals or bulletins. How do we communicate? Where do we sit? How do we leave the building? What areas are not available to parishioners? As the Task Force meets, they will address a variety of ideas, cares, and concerns for your well-being. The persons who are a part of the proscribed Bishop’s protocol for a Reopening Task Force are listed here: Vickie Davis, Joan Dailey, Doreen DeLisio, Bonnie Babyak, Bill Ambert, Ed An-derson, Roger Patterson, Doug Conner, Rick Shaw, and myself. On a personal note, I was able to take a Sunday off and go to our United Methodist camp, Camp Wanake, June 12th-14th. I spent that weekend there camping with my wife Susan’s family. Her nieces and nephews had made arrangements to have a tree planted in Susan’s honor/memory, and it was a good time for me to be away. I want to give a shout of affirmation to Sean Baran, our organist, and Bill Ambert, our choir direc-tor. They have been working alongside me throughout this different time of worship. Paul Iden and Rob Fry have handled technology needs along with Dan Patterson. I thank Sandy Ruffner, our secretary, for working continually from home, and coming in to the church to pay bills, send in payroll, and accomplish her administrative work. And thanks to Julie Bachani, our receptionist, for putting the newsletter in place. As we continue to live stream and record worship, bible study, and our Friday Round Up message, I invite you to watch for texts, emails, and the Carillon, as well as announcements in worship. They will communicate as to how and when we will reopen the church. And for those who contin-ue to ask if we will livestream our services even after we meet in person, again I say, YES. Live streaming is now a permanent part of what we do in worship at Boardman UMC. We will be back in our building for worship; however, it will be gradual and we won’t rush it. Even with this new paradigm in place, enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you all soon. Joyfully in Christ, Pastor Jerry

(The afternoon Hand and Foot is canceled until further notice.)

UMW READING PROGRAM BOOKS ARE FOR ALL MEMBERS Books are important to us as we learn and grow in our faith. As John Wesley wrote, “A reading people will always be a knowing people.” The selection of books chosen for the 2020 United Methodist Reading Program is strong as it helps Christians learn more about being followers of the Lord through fiction, nonfiction, devotionals, and Biblical study books. GLORY HAPPENING: FINDING THE DIVINE IN EVERYDAY PLACES by Kaitlin Curtice (2020 UMW Reading Program, NURTURING FOR COMMUNITY) The author is described as “a Native American Christian, author, speaker, and worship leader.” I describe her as a woman who shares her Christian journey through anecdotal stories, but she highlights each one with quotes (from the Bible, Victor Hugo, Dostoyevsky, J.K. Rowling, Geraldine Brooks, etc.) and powerful poetic prayers. Her hon-esty and personal relationship with God helped me connect with who I am and how to open my heart to God. Here is just one of her moving prayers. “You are the stillness in this place/Holy One, Kingdom come./Embrace us here, now./Speak into our hollow places/where we’ve lost our words and find only/utterances, only experiences/and ob-servations to teach us who you are./Secure us by your kind mercy./Jesus, speak in the quiet./Give us rest./Amen.” FINDING PEACE IN AN ANXIOUS WORLD by Erin James-Brown, ed. (2020 UMW Reading Program, mission leader’s guide, SPIRITUAL GROWTH) Published by the UMW this year and set to be the book for leaders of the mission study this summer, this book is directed to adults as background material on how the Serenity Prayer has meaning for Christians in our communities today. Erin James-Brown, editor and former pastor of Urban Village Church of Chicago, begins with an overview outlining the four main points. Each of the chapters is explored by a different pastor of the church: Hannah Kardon (serenity), Brittany Isaac (acceptance), Christian Coon (courage), and Emily McGinley (wisdom). Their insight into addressing the difference between being anxious and being fearful, finding when it is better to act with courage or change our attitude, or discovering true wisdom as found in Proverbs, all focus back on our relationship to Christ. This book is especially important in the light of the events that unfold in the news each day. It opens a way for con-gregations to discuss how we need to read, listen, and connect as followers of Christ. #RU HOOKED: TEENS & SOCIAL MEDIA: FOR TEENS AND THE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT THEM by Jonathan Smith (2020 UMW Reading Program, NURTURING FOR COMMUNITY) If you are a parent, grandparent, or even an older adult (I mean over 60), do you believe the young adults and teens in your life are speaking a different language and communicate with other means than you do? I’m talking about the internet, instant messaging, Twitter, and all varieties of social media. They seem to understand the technology far better than most adults, but that can be a good thing. Aren’t all Christians on a faith journey traveling at a different pace trying to grow in our relationship with God? Whether we are older or younger in years, we are still on the path seeking to be more like Christ but moving at different speeds on our journeys. Author Jonathan Smith, the director of Technology for Faith Ministries in Indiana, has written a resource for Christians of all ages to use different media both as a social and as a learning tool. This small 40-page book gives readers of all ages the chance to connect and start a conversation as they learn the power of technology and basic faith beliefs. This book is a way to open dia-logue as we learn from each other.

RE-OPENING TASK FORCE UPDATE FROM JUNE 24, 2020 MEETING Hello Everyone, I want to update you on the work your Reopening Task Force is engaged in. First of all, the General Rules of United Methodists are this: 1. Do all the Good you can. 2. Do No Harm. 3. Stay in line with the ordinances of God. Your Task force is working with these rules in the forefront, especially to “Do No Harm”. Our volunteer cleaning team is being assembled by Joan Dailey. Doreen DeLisio will coordinate our Usher /Greeter training. Know that we have discussed a variety of dates to reopen, however, it is always with the knowledge that we are keeping parishioners’ health at the forefront, and we are listening to advice from medical health experts. As COVID -19 spikes occur throughout the country and or community, the Task Force members are attuned to that, and assess the situations in a reasonable fash-ion. Reality is that all of us would like to just jump right back into church and have things the way they used to be. But that is not an option, as you know. As we cautiously re-open, our Finance Committee has met with masks and social distancing as did the United Methodist Women. Whenever we settle upon a date to begin worshipping in person, you will receive an email with details and a letter in the mail. Please know that as we move cautiously in this process, we continue to pray for you all on a regular basis. If you have questions about our reopening process, you may contact any of the Task Force members whose names are listed below. Thanks, and please be safe! Pastor Jerry Task Force members: Bill Amber t, Bonnie Babyak, Joan Dailey, Doreen DeLisio, Ed Anderson, Roger Patterson, Doug Conner, Vickie Davis, Rick Shaw, Rev. Jerry Krueger

EOC Annual Conference Members to Meet Virtually September 26-27 for

AC 2020 By Rick Wolcott* Out of an abundance of care for all members of Annu-al Conference, Bishop Tracy S. Malone, after prayerful discernment and in consultation with the Extended Cabi-net, leadership of the Board of Ministry, and the Annual Conference secretary, has made the decision that Annual Conference 2020, and the Clergy Executive Session that precedes it, will be conducted virtually on the previously announced dates of September 25-27. The prayerful decision was made now to provide as much time as possible for the Annual Conference plan-ning team to do the work of reviewing all options and selecting the best online platform for providing powerful worship and conducting the essential business of Annual Conference 2020 Bearing Fruit that Lasts: Connected. In working to host Annual Conference in the safest way possible for the 1,500 conference members, Bishop Malone discussed with the Conference Executive Direc-tors information that the AC planning team had gathered from the Ohio Department of Health, from local medical professionals, from Lakeside Chautauqua, and from other UMC annual conferences before making the decision to switch to virtual sessions. “After experiencing months of physical distancing, we had high hopes of gathering together in-person for Annu-al Conference and for the Clergy Executive Session. This was a difficult but necessary decision to make now due to the challenges we would face putting precautionary health and safety measures in place, and to be good stew-ards of EOC staff time and Lakeside Chautauqua staff time in preparing for a conference that might not be able to take place in-person. At this point, it doesn’t appear as if the scaling back of restrictions is moving at a pace that would enable six-foot social distancing to be rescinded by time we meet in September,” said Bishop Tracy S. Malone. The Bishop and East Ohio Conference leadership thanked Lakeside Chautauqua Interim Director Dan Dud-ley for the time that he and Lakeside’s leadership have invested in working with the Conference to host a post-poned Annual Conference. They also expressed their dis-appointment that we will not be able to gather in-person on the shores of Lake Erie as planned this year for a time of Christian fellowship and to conduct the essential busi-ness of Annual Conference 2020. There is much work to be done in the coming weeks and months. Once decisions have been made and details can be announced for the virtual Clergy Executive Ses-sion on September 25 and the virtual session of Annual Conference 2020 on September 26-27, they will be post-ed on the Conference website and Facebook page, pub-lished in the Conference bi-weekly electronic newsletter E-News, and e-mailed to the clergy and laity of the East Ohio Conference. *Rick Wolcott is director of Communications for the East Ohio Conference of The United Methodist Church.

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT The Finance Committee was able to meet in the chapel on Monday, June 8th. Even though we were maintaining social distancing and wearing masks, it was still good to be able to see everyone again. It was also good to see that BUMP was once again open, although in a modified form. As the reopening committee continues to work on how and when we can safely return to services at the church, the Finance Committee is happy to inform you that our financial situation continues to be stable. This is due to the continued faithful support of all of you in a time of great uncertainty. In addition, the church has re-ceived contributions from non-members who are viewing the on-line services and Bible Study. We ask that you continue your support through your prayers and gifts as you are able, and we look forward to being able to see everyone again in the not too distant future.

MISSION COMMITTEE - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

We are looking for volunteers to help build and install a wheelchair ramp for a needy family in Youngstown. Some basic carpentry skills are a plus. If you'd like to volunteer, please call Mark Carver at 330-398-9938 or email him [email protected]

FROM THE ORGAN CONSOLE: THE CHURCH’S RESIDENT CHOIR The pipe organ that is heard each week is actually composed of many parts. The place where the organist sits, the organ console, is nothing more than a control center. No music comes out of the organ console. The sound emits from the 1,725 pipes that live behind the wood grill-work at the front of the sanctuary. A large air blower, located in the basement, pushes air through the pipes to create the sounds that you hear each week. The largest pipes are 16’ tall, and the smallest pipes are the size of your pinky finger! Since 1967, every congregant in BUMC has joined their voices alongside these pipes. In a sense, the pipes of the pipe organ are the church’s permanent choir. The experi-ence of being led in praise by BUMC’s pipe organ unifies our worship experience across time with church members past, present, and future. The next time you hear the pipes sing, take a moment to con-sider how it is these same pipes were heard over 50 years ago and also consider how it will be the same pipes continuing to lead worship for many years to come.

WEBSITE / MOBILE APP

GIVING THROUGH ….Tithe.ly

With the COVID 19 restrictions on meeting in person,

Boardman United Methodist Church has upgraded our online giving capability by utilizing a newer, easier to use,

app called Tithe.ly. If you go onto the BUMC website, you’ll notice the prominent “Donate” button. Push it, and

you can make an online donation via your computer through our website.

A significant benefit to the Tithe.ly app is the ease of use

and applicability via your cell phone. If you want to do-nate via cell phone, simply go to the Google play or the Apple store, and download the Tithe.ly app.

Simple questions are asked about where you want the money to go, what account it is being drawn from, and the amount you want to send. You receive an email confir-

mation receipt within about one minute.

Interestingly enough, our giving through this mobile app is quite significant and continues to grow. This is due to

the ease of use, and not having to write a check, find an envelope and a stamp, and mail it. Mailing a check is

fine, but this is just another alternative. If you’re interest-ed, this might be an app you would like to have on your

phone, “just in case.”

Thank you all for your continued financial church support through your giving in whatever form that may take!
