Momentum results from moments and The Carey School enjoyed several historic moments in the 2012-2013 school year that continue to carry us forward. Anyone who has been on our campus in the last year feels a vibrant energy and, like all great schools, a momentum that sustains our direction. In 2012-2013 we celebrated our 85th year in

various ways including through a history wall that depicts key turning points in the school’s evolution. Such celebration resulted from careful planning and tied to six key topics (known as the “Big Six”) that our administrative team focused on resulting from our recent accreditation. The remaining five areas centered on relocation logistics, defining diversity, making the fifth grade year a culminating experience, reviewing our communication platforms, and outlining our curricular scope and sequence. Thanks to the great work of faculty/staff committees we made significant progress in each of these areas.

As these pages indicate, the 2012-2013 school year was a propitious one for the school at many levels and set in place conditions for even greater programmatic success going forward. Put simply, giving has a lasting impact and the philanthropic generosity of our community has a momentum of its own as we continue our tradition of strong parent participation. Happily, in recent years the faculty joined the 100% participation club. Such commitment is the Carey way and speaks to a legacy of those who made the school what it is today. One of those people, of course, is former President of the Board of Trustees, Carol Pereira, whose service to the school has continued the legacy of wise and grounded governance. Please take a moment to read her thoughts at the close of her time at Carey.

I hope you will see in this publication that the Annual Fund is vital to and reflective of our well-being. It serves as a reminder that every one does their part at The Carey School; the idea is that when every family and faculty member contributes, all students benefit. That legacy of “leaving your mark” is worth celebrating. Happy reading.

LEAVING YOUR MARK

Carol Pereira, President of the Board of Trustees

This past year was yet another financially successful year for The Carey School. We had a record breaking Annual Fund that came in above $450,000 for the first time. More importantly, however, we continue our tradition of strong parent participation from current families and we had 100% participation from the faculty and staff for the very first time. Wow! I can tell you that there are many independent schools out there that are jealous of those statistics! We truly have one incredible Carey community.

Thanks to this and prior record-breaking Annual Funds, we instituted the ability for donors to direct their Annual Fund dollars to a number of specific areas of school needs. Among those items were faculty support, tuition assistance, endowment and the academic initiatives. Thanks to the generosity of these donors, we have been able to provide significant levels of professional development support to our faculty. These faculty have ventured out and brought back a plethora of new ideas and teaching elements into our children’s classrooms as a result of these offerings. In addition, we have been able to increase the tuition assistance availability to both new and existing families. The Board has tuition assistance as one of its main priorities and is working hard each year to increase the available funds in order to reach our goal of completely need-blind admissions. Even throughout the recent significant economic downturn, the Board was able to continue its goal of increased tuition assistance and met all incremental needs of existing families in the process. We strongly believe that every family matters at Carey and will do everything in our capacity as Board members to support that philosophy. Furthermore, our endowment has now grown nearly $950,000. While we recognize that there is still a lot of room for improvement in our endowment, we are proud of the discipline the Board has taken to date to get it to its current level. Finally, those precious Annual Fund dollars have funded vast improvements in the academic program including the hiring of a new Math Specialist, additional student support as well as much needed resources in the Admission and Advancement offices.

A community like Carey cannot thrive without contributions from all constituents and I would be remiss if I tried to thank everyone here. However, I do want to call out a special note of appreciation to all of our Carey families. You are what makes this community so special as each and every family matters at Carey. We teach our children kindness, respect, and personal responsibility and no one models that better than you – with your continued commitment to making The Carey School stronger each day for our children. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all you do for this wonderful school that will always hold a special place in our children’s hearts.

When my family first joined the Carey community 13 years ago, The Carey School was a wonderful little elementary school with an unsustainable financial model. With the doubling of grades K-5, and very disciplined financial oversight by the Board over the years, I am delighted to tell you that The Carey School now has a solid financial foundation. All of this could not have been achieved without the tireless work of so many individuals dedicated to making Carey the gold standard of elementary school education. Those people are too many to name here but they include not only the hard working Advancement teams over the years, but also the dedicated and committed faculty and staff of The Carey School that make it the place it is today. It is because of the results of all of their hard work that current families, alumni, grandparents and others choose to donate their precious philanthropic dollars to our beloved institution, resulting in the solid foundation it has today.

HONORING LEADERS

Devon Gold, Vice President of the Board of Trustees

At the end of the 2012-13 school year, we honored five transformative leaders as they retired after a collective 24 years of service to The Carey School Board of Trustees. Diane Isola, Sarah Murphy, Carol Pereira, John Somorjai and Bill Thompson are visionary friends of the school whose dedication and commitment have benefited the school in numerous ways. These leaders have helped shepherd our school through much transition, including our enrollment expansion to achieve double classes in grades K-5, the fundraising for and construction of new buildings, the growth of our financial reserves and endowment to provide necessary stability and the hiring of our next Head of School. Throughout their service, they were thoughtful and strategic leaders who contributed countless hours, expertise and insight to make Carey the very best it can be for the community of students, faculty, staff and families we serve. They will be missed, but their example of leadership and service will endure.

In a special way, we honored retiring President Carol Pereira for her seven years of commitment to the Board of Trustees. Carol’s contributions are far-reaching and transformative. She served as Treasurer during a troubled economy, strategically and responsibly stewarding the school’s resources, managing to grow our reserves during a time when some schools had to close their doors. As Vice-President, Carol led a faculty and board committee in a thorough and inclusive search process that brought Duncan Lyon to us as Head of School. And during her term as President, Carol oversaw the Carey Forward capital campaign and the planning for the most ambitious building plan our school has undertaken. As impressive as her contributions are the manner in which she always conducted herself. Tireless, efficient, decisive and cheerful, Carol led our Board with integrity, always keeping the best interests of the student at heart and in mind. We are tremendously grateful.

Carey Board WelcomesSix New Trustees

The Carey School Board of Trustees is thrilled to welcome six new Board members who began three-year terms on July 1, 2013. These new Board members bring a host of diverse skill sets and life experiences to the table, and their commitment to The Carey School has been exhibited through their work with the CSPA Executive Committee, the Carey Forward capital campaign, the Annual Fund, Walkfest, the Auction and more. The six new Trustees are Ben Coughlin, Miguel Espinosa, Robbie Fang, Mason Ford, Markus Hunt, and Lydia Alexander Kapoor.

Ben Coughlin has two children at Carey and is currently co-chairing the Carey Forward campaign for Carey. Ben brings financial knowledge and experience to the Board as well as experience with independent schools. Ben is serving on the Advancement and Finance committees of the Board this year.

Miguel Espinosa has two children at Carey and has taken on an enormous role in the building project. He is also leading the foundation effort of the campaign. Miguel brings finance and non-profit board experience to Carey. He is serving on the Advancement, Buildings & Grounds, and Strategy/Communications committees of the Board this year.

Robbie Fang has two children at Carey and is leading the Board’s diversity initiative and serving as the parent liaison for the building project’s relocation committee. Robbie brings marketing and communications experience to Carey. She is serving on the Advancement and Strategy/Communications committees of the Board this year.

Mason Ford has two children at Carey and is in his second year of co-chairing Carey’s record-breaking Annual Fund. Mason brings investment and finance experience to the Board. He is serving on the Advancement Committee and the Committee on Trustees this year.

Markus Hunt is the Upper School Head at Cathedral School for Boys in San Francisco. He has also been a Latin teacher at Rye Country Day School (NY), Trinity School (NYC) and The Field School (DC). Markus brings a strong independent school background and objective lens to Carey’s Board and is serving on the Finance and Strategy/Communications committees of the Board this year.

Lydia Alexander Kapoor is the mother of four current, former, and future Carey children (two at Carey presently, one graduate, and a toddler at home). She is in her second year of co-chairing the Carey’s ambitious and successful Annual Fund and has also served on the CSPA team. Lydia brings a medical background to the Board as well as experiencing in leading and serving on other school boards. She is serving on the Advancement, Strategy/Communications, and Committee on Trustee committees this year.

We thank all of our new Trustees for their dedication to Carey.

FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

The Carey School remains a strong institution financially - the school remains fully enrolled with an enviable waitlist, Annual Fund receipts continued an upward trajectory, and the Board was able to make necessary investments in long-standing needs while still adding to reserves.

The Carey School’s Annual Fund effort had another banner year with contributions increasing by more than 7.2% over the previous year. As is the Carey School tradition, 10% of Annual Fund receipts are committed to the Carey School Endowment, which has now grown to nearly $950,000.

Expenditures increased less than 6% over the prior year in spite of the continued pressure from health insurance cost increases and a continued commitment to meet the tuition assistance needs of our community.

For more detailed information, audited financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2013 may be obtained from the Business Office.

Last year, as we celebrated The Carey School’s 85th anniversary year, we looked back at the school’s history to see how the institution has remained mission-focused in providing a challenging program in a nurturing and supportive environment. We feel proud and grateful when we look at our larger school community: 50 impressive individuals who make up our extremely dedicated faculty, staff and administration; over 1000 alumni families spread out across the country and around the world; and approximately 500 current parents who support 249 students who embody kindness, respect and personal responsiblility. All these constituencies leave a mark on the school and the world with their investments of time, energy, and resources.

This last year, the Carey community once again demonstrated its commitment to the children as we worked together to create a top-notch academic environment for our students. We depend on all of you to make this happen: volunteers, parents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty, staff and all of our generous donors. This report acknowledges and thanks each of you who made possible the school’s continued success.

We are particularly grateful to our Annual Fund Co-Chairpersons Lydia Alexander and Mason Ford whose leadership helped raise $487,457 from current parents, grandparents, alumni, alumni parents, faculty and staff, corporations, and friends of the school. Moreover, we want thank everyone who supported this campaign as either an ambassador and/or donor. The dollars raised supported the operational budget including funding endowment, faculty support, financial aid, academic initiatives and more.

Additionally, we launched Carey Forward with Devon Gold and Sarah Murphy serving as Co-Chairpersons. This campaign is the most ambitious capital campaign in the school history and is the realization of the vision and years of planning that previous generations of Carey families supported. It will add nearly 5,000 square feet of instructional space, including a new multipurpose room, an early childhood education center, new classrooms for music, math, and world languages, a teaching kitchen and a new administrative office suite. This campaign is off to a great start thanks to the dedication and support of everyone on the campaign committee and all of the generous donors to the campaign.

The Carey School Parents Association (CSPA) led by Cathleen Thomas, Laura Agarwal, Susan Faris, Robbie Fang and Maria Gorelik continued to enhance and enrich the overall Carey student experience through their leadership. This executive team not only demonstrated their overall leadership of the CSPA but jumped right in to lead the annual auction as well. The auction was held at the Peninsula Golf and Country Club where guests enjoyed a parents’ night out and were able to bid, dine and dance. This year’s Walkfest was led by Angela Espinosa and Sandy Moore and highlighted the school’s strong sense of community and was a lot of fun for students, parents, grandparents, alumni, and alumni parents. The combined dollars raised at both of these events helped support tuition assistance, professional development and “Carey at Play,” the new initiative to improve our play spaces and equipment. This CSPA as a whole continue to make The Carey School the special school that it is today and we are so thankful to each and every one of the parents for their efforts.

Here’s to another terrific 85 years for The Carey School!

THE ANNUAL FUNDMason Ford, Annual Fund Co-Chairperson

Lydia Alexander, Annual Fund Co-Chairperson

Wow - another great year for the Annual Fund! We cannot thank you enough for taking part in this annual campaign. Its success is vital to Carey!

The generosity and participation of the community was astonishing – the amount of capital raised grew for the 11th year in a row – a remarkable feat! We are excited to report that the Annual Fund raised $487,457.

The Annual Fund is the foundation of our school’s fundraising program. This year’s fund was a rousing success in terms of dollars raised, surpassing the original goal of $400,000 set by the Board of Trustees. But more importantly, Carey continued its longstanding tradition of broad participation, with 99% participation from parents, faculty, staff and administration. This overwhelming show of support demonstrates a robust commitment to Carey and to the belief that everyone can make a difference in the quality of their child’s education.

Gifts to the Annual Fund have an immediate impact. The fund supports tuition assistance, is used to attract and retain our outstanding faculty, and provides for exciting new academic initiatives. It allows our amazing teachers to bring our magical program to life. “Annual giving makes every day happen!”

We would like to personally thank the Annual Fund Committes listed below who selflessly and tirelessly provided leadership for the fund. Above all, fundraising truly is a team effort!

Every Carey student and faculty member took part in this project, “Hands On Carey!,” during Clare Carey Willard Art Week 2013. It was based on the book, “The Colors of Us” by Karen Katz, where Lena, who’s seven, learns that brown is not brown. If you mix the right amount of white, black, yellow and red you can get the brown, peachy or tawny tan flesh tone that’s “right” for you. The students mixed and created their skin tones leaving their mark on Carey!

Carey parents made their mark by supporting our school in so many, exciting ways. Our families served as helping hands to our faculty and staff through the room parent program, regular appreciation breakfasts, a week-long celebration, and enrichment activities. We also helped each other and our children through the mentor program, regular community events, and parent education workshops and speakers. Finally, we connected to our broader community through the annual neighborhood cookie drive, visits to a local senior center and food bank, hands-on work at an elementary school in need, and much more. Carey parents, through the generous contributions of our time, talents and resources, championed professional development, financial aid, new play equipment and shade structures, and arts and world language programming. Thank you for your passionate commitment to Carey - our parents’ fingerprints are all over the Carey experience!

Thank you to the 2012-2013 current parent volunters for all your time, energy, and resources for this school year.
