A historyOur history relates back to the latter part of the 19th century when the first spice contract was written. Ever since, the company has been an active participant and trend leader. We are proud to be at the forefront of developments in our business such as setting the trend for processing in origin countries and cultivating sustainable spices.

Today Nedspice Group companies serve over 250 customers worldwide in supplying a full range of processed spices and dehydrated ingredients.

We have a well-developed system of procurement and processing at source. Besides that we have the ability to ship and deliver mixed containers on a just-in-time basis and are experienced in the handling of logistics, warehousing and distribution.

Nedspice employees and shareholders will continue to contribute to this development with long term commitment by looking for improvements and innovations in processing methods, logistics and distribution.

Nedspice Sourcing BVNedspice Sourcing BV is the commercial centre of the operations of Nedspice. Its involvement in spices finds its origin in the trade with Indonesia during the second half of the 19th century. The company is well introduced and enjoys an excellent relationship with all spice industries in consuming markets of Europe, North America, Africa and the Far East. Nedspice Sourcing BV employs a staff of 16 dedicated employees in the areas of commerce, traffic and accounting. The company handles some 16,000 tons of spice ingredients per annum which makes it one of the large marketers of added value spices in the world.

The products sold are purchased from other Nedspice Group owned companies in India and Vietnam or from approved 3rd party suppliers. The company has distribution facilities in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

Nedspice USNedspice has been doing business in the USA since many decades already. Supplying spices to a wide range of customers serviced from the office of Nedspice Sourcing BV in the Netherlands. Now these sales activities are brought together under the name of Nedspice US. Nedspice US keeps office in South Carolina and works with designated distribution warehouses in New Jersey, Wisconsin and California. A full range of spices, dehydrated ingredients and specialty products are offered in full container loads or pallet sized. Sourcing is done from Nedspice’s company owned facilities or from 3rd party suppliers who have successfully passed Nedspice’s QC/QA and traceability standard. Currently Nedspice US distributes close to 2000 tons of spices into the US market.

Nedspice Dehydrated Ingredients BVNedspice’s activity in dehydrated vegetables and herbs started in the acquisition of Dika BV, a 3rd generation family business that was established in 1937 and is located in Schoonhoven, The Netherlands. After acquisition the premises, warehousing capabilities and processing facilities were upgraded. During 2014 the company’s name was changed into Nedspice Dehydrated Ingredients BV.

The company’s main line of business is in the sourcing and processing of a full range of dehydrated vegetables and herbs. Sourcing takes place from reliable suppliers in origins like China, India, Egypt, Turkey, Eastern Europe, etc., which are regularly audited by Nedspice’s audit teams from our factories in India, Vietnam and the Netherlands; supplier audit reports are available upon request. Processing activities comprise of cleaning, sorting, grading, blending and milling. A state-of the art stainless steel sorting/sieving line with integrated metal detection and X-ray sorting enables reprocessing products to such an extent that the highest industry requirements can be met.

Nedspice Processing Vietnam LtdNedspice Processing Vietnam Ltd was established in 1997 as the first grading and cleaning operation for pepper in Vietnam. At that time Nedspice did foresee that Vietnam would rapidly become a major producing country of pepper.

Building on its success and request from customers for more high quality pepper with guarantees for microbiological cleanliness Nedspice was the first company in Vietnam that build a new factory with an integrated sterilisation facility that would be able to match the requirements of the customers. This new factory was commissioned in March 2002.During 2003 it was decided to expand the operation by adding a grinding line capable of grinding various spices originated not only from Vietnam, but also from other countries. In 2009 expansion plans for office, warehousing and processing capacity were realised. By combining the cleaning, grading, sterilisation and grinding operations Nedspice Processing Vietnam Ltd has now become a leading ingredients processor of single spices with an installed capacity of some 14,000 tons. The company looks after the well-being of some 300 employees.

In 2012 a major upgrade of building and equipment infrastructure took place. A fully integrated processing line with Bühler cleaning equipment, Ventilex steam steriliser and a milling and packing system was installed. Total processing capacity is some 4,000 tons per annum. The company hasabout 68 dedicated employees. Raw materials aresourced mostly from within India and comprisesproducts like black pepper, turmeric, ginger, nutmegs, chillies, cumin, coriander, fennel, fenugreek, dill, kalonji, dehydrated green pepper, cinnamon, etc.

SustainabilityNedspice believes that sustainability is one of the main challenges for the food industry in the years ahead. Pulled by global market developments smallholder farmers increasingly shift to other, more valuable sources of income. In addition, many young farmers are leaving agriculture and migrate to urban areas for jobs in non-agricultural sectors. These trends are also felt in the spice sector where many, often aging, smallholder farmers move to high intensive crops. Not only does this affect the scarcity of spices, it also has negative effects on the environment – high intensive monoculture farm systems cause serious land degradation, pollution and erosion issues – and on communities that suffer from health problems due to the high use of chemicals in such systems. In order to maximize their yields small scale spice farmers are increasingly pushed to apply high-intensive agricultural practices and chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides in their farming systems. Lack of knowledge regarding sustainable agricultural practices, low quality input supply and lack of improved technologies keeps yields low. Other constraints are water stress, fluctuating farm-gate prices and weak supply linkages between farmers and exporters. As a result spice production could harm local communities and at consumer level affect food safety.

Since Nedspice sources from farmers these are all issues that affect Nedspice as well. The wellbeing of our suppliers and stability of supply is therefore crucial to us as well as to our customers and end customers.

Nedspice-Farmers Partnership ProgrammeTo ensure that spice farming remains financially attractive and offers a sustainable livelihood for farmers Nedspice has the ambition to develop backward integration programmes for farmers in Vietnam and India and other countries where we work. This ambition is laid down in the Nedspice-Farmers Partnership Programme which defines the approach, key principles as well as the expected results. Current projects include sustainable cuminand turmeric farming in India and sustainable pepper farming in Vietnam, for which we obtained certification. Excellent processing facilities at origin With our advanced processing technology in cleaning, sterilisation, milling and packing we can process gentler and more efficient thereby turning out fresh and high quality finished goods. Typical products are fine ground (250-600 micron), coarse ground (500-1000 micron), cracked (1000-2000 micron) and half berry available in a variety of packaging alternatives and mixed container shipments.
