by Marilyn Michelin W OW! There were an amazing 33 entries into our Cantik Batik Youth Challenge this year! There was such a variety of interpretations of the theme My Favourite Animal. It made choosing winners a difficult task for Apprentice Judge Brandy Lynn Maslowski. Thanks to Cantik Batiks for sponsoring this challenge again this year. They are generously providing prizes for the winners of the three categories and the Viewers’ Choice. Each winner will receive a selection of assorted fabrics/precuts chosen by Shania Sunga. The Viewers’ Choice winner will receive either a 9.1 metre bolt of fabric, or one metre of nine different Cantik Batiks fabrics chosen from their website: www.cantikbatiks.com. Thank you, also, to Brandy Lynn Maslowski for judging these quilts and picking one winner in each category. Our Cantik Batik Youth Challenge seems to be getting bigger and better every year. This year there were a whopping 21 entrants into the youngest category, junior kindergarten to grade five, eight entrants in the middle school category, grade six to grade eight, and four entrants in the high school category, grade nine to grade twelve. Our youngest entrant was just four years old. Alexa Kalist is a return entrant and also winner of the High School Category with her quilt Hoot You Looking At? Alexa enjoys quilting, following in her mother’s footsteps. She explains that her, “First quilt was a simple rag quilt that I made for my cousin a few years ago when I wanted to learn to sew. I believe that started an addiction.” Her favourite part of quilt-making is, “The designing. I loved the challenge of coming up with just the right design and colours of the quilt. I also loved trying to incorporate the challenge fabric into it in a unique way.” Brandy commented that Alexa’s “quilt shows an excellent use of colour value (lights, mediums and darks) between the body, the wings and the facial features of the owl. The challenge fabric on the wings blends in, but adds a fun element because viewers can look for the whales.” 58 CQA/ACC Summer 2015 The Cantik Batiks Youth Challenge—2015 My Favourite Animal Left Shelby Wakefield’s quilt Shelby’s Aquarium Above Shelby Wakefield Below Alexa Kalist with her quilt Hoot You Looking At?
