Cancers

in the medical cohort (575 workers)

there are 47 cancer cases

in the group of 47 cancer workers there are

21 people who received ≥ 0.5 mSv

the average cumulative dose per worker

is 34 mSv (effective dose) and 17 mSv

(equivalent dose to hands)

Page 9: The cancer risk among exposed workers in the nuclear ... fileNuclear center in Świerk, Poland built in 1956 . Nuclear workers in Świerk data from 1956 to 2001 10 years of cancer

Results – odds ratio

taking effective doses only: OR = 0.90 (0.62-1.18, 68% CI)

taking both effective and equivalent to hands doses: OR = 0.94 (0.65-1.23, 68% CI)

statistically nonsignificant decrease of cancer incidences by (10.4 ± 27.6)% and (6.0 ± 28.8)% respectively

Page 10: The cancer risk among exposed workers in the nuclear ... fileNuclear center in Świerk, Poland built in 1956 . Nuclear workers in Świerk data from 1956 to 2001 10 years of cancer

Results – lack of cancers

no cancer case is detected among 52 workers

who received maximal cumulative doses

(from 35 mSv to 653 mSv)

no cancer case is detected among 43 workers

who were chronically irradiated during more

than 12 years (max. 26 years)

Adjusted Odds Ratio

taking effective doses only: AOR = 0.86 (0.58-1.14, 68% CI)

Standard Incidence Ratio

Comparing with external population

for irradiated group (≥ 0.5 mSv): SIR = (32.2 ± 8.3)%

for non-irradiated group (controls): SIR = (34.3 ± 8.1)%

External population: SIR = 100%

No healthy worker effect (?)

a - the threshold of dose sensitivity (=0.5 mSv) is taken as a default one in the presented paper.

b – this case was precisely described in table 3.

c - only the effective dose is taken into account as a criterion of selection of workers considered to fall into irradiated or non-irradiated (controls) groups (see figure 1). The

equivalent dose to hands is not taken into calculations of OR.

Table 4. Final results of the analysis as OR (odds ratio) with different criteria of dose sensitivity threshold and a type of dose. The uncertainties show one standard

deviation (68% CI). The last collumn presents the average cumulative dose per worker.
