Work Day July 23 (9-Noon)
We will be having another work day to help get the church ready for
the Regional Assembly in October. We thank all who helped out last
month at our second work day. We are encouraging all who can help
to come by on the 23rd and help us as we get the church looking its
best.
A big “Thank You” to Shirley Musser
and all the people that sent cards,
called, and prayed for my recovery.
Thanks so much,
Karen Sunderwirth
Thank you to all of you who have kept
me in your prayers these past few
months. These continued back problems
would be so much harder to deal with if
not for the continued support from you,
my church family. I am overwhelmed by
the support and concern that you all
have shown me and am forever grateful!
In God’s Love,
Diana Criger
We are so happy
to be able to congratulate

While in seminary I was once asked to give my thoughts about preaching, what it was for
and what it was supposed to do. As I thought about this, one example kept coming to my head,
dry contact lenses. I have worn contact lenses since high school and there are times when the
lenses just get too dry. This usually happens to me when I am reading for a long
period of time, and in seminary it happened a lot. When they dried out I had to rub my eyes,
trying to get the lenses to moisten with my tears, and usually read, once more, that which I had
just read. This is what preaching is for me, dry contacts. When hearing a sermon, whether it is
mine or it is someone else’s, I hope that it makes you want to rub your eyes and re-read that
which you think you have already read.
This summer has given me many times to listen to what others have to say about their
beliefs and their thoughts. While traveling, with the youth group, at church camps, or just on
my own, I have had the ability to hear other people give sermons, homilies, and messages to
those around them. This is always something that I look forward too. It excites me to hear what
other people think about the Bible, religion, Christ, and how each of these are working in our
world today. Every time I listen to their words, whether I fully agree or not, I understand that
they are coming from a different perspective, with different experiences, and I try to learn from
those experiences they have had and that I have not.
While on the mission trip I was able to hear Rev. Dr. Jeff Moore, the Senior Minister at
Webster Groves Christian Church, give a sermon about how things divide people. When he was
younger he was missionary in South Africa and did research for a PhD. That night as he spoke,
he told a story about a river that divided the region. On one side the people used one language
and on the other side they used a different language. He compared this to Delmar Street in St.
Louis, which has one of the steepest drop-offs of social-economic living just by being on one side
of the street or the other. I have never experienced anything like this, but because he has, I
have learned a little bit more and my eyes have been opened just a bit. All thanks to listening to
someone else’s experiences.
Different experiences and perspectives offer us a new opportunity to learn more about
others, the Bible, Jesus Christ, and ourselves. As this summer continues on, and I have two
more weeks of vacation, I hope that you take the opportunity of hearing about other people’s
perspectives, think about what was being said, and allow them to help you get a better idea of
who you are and what you believe.

With your help, CWF will be furnishing four types of kits
for Festival of Sharing again this year! School Kits,
Health/Hygiene Kits, Family Food Packs, and Women’s
Prison Packs. There are three ways you can help—by
buying some of the items, putting together a complete kit,
or making a cash donation with a check to the church with
CWF on the memo line. Thank You!
Crosslines Report for July, 2016
On July 12 food was distributed by volunteers from Central and from St. John’s Chapel to 108
families representing 252 individuals. Donations of food and personal hygiene items are most
welcome. Please leave your donations in the grocery cart in the church lobby. Be aware that
Crosslines cannot accept open containers, home canned goods, or out-of-date food. If you wish to
make a cash donation, indicate on your offering envelope the amount of your offering you wish
to be given to Crosslines. Cash donations are particularly effective because of the advantageous
prices Crosslines is able to obtain as a result of their large volume purchases.
CWF Service Report - June 2016
$44.50 was given to Culture Club for our monthly project.
$500 was given to Disciples Mission Fund.
We gave Newborns in Need 18 tacked baby quilts, and 1 bag of batting.
45 volunteer hours were given this month.
Choir Anthems
In the month of July, the choir will be
singing their favorite anthems from the
past year. If you have had a favorite
anthem this year, come on Sunday
mornings to worship and maybe you’ll
be able to hear it again.

Again this year, our CWF/Disciples Women are putting together School Kits and Health Kits. Also,
the state president of Church Women United challenged all the CWF members to put together
Family Food packs and Women prison packs. These will need to be finished by the first part of
October. If you can put together any of these kits, provide some of the items for the kits, or donate
money towards any or all of the four, your help would be greatly appreciated. (Our CWF will provide
the bags for the school kits). Any checks for these projects should be written to CWF
