afRica & the iNdiaN oceaNFrom the days of the East India Company, merchants have plied the shipping routes of the Indian Ocean. Portuguese and Dutch, British and Arab traders sought to make their fortune from the lucrative export of silks and opium from the Mughal Empire, and ivory and spices from Africa. Today it is the lure of adventure that draws us to these shores.

In a globalised world of increasing sameness, the nations of the Indian ocean continue to maintain their uniqueness and mystique. Time has barely touched rural Bangladesh with its rich cultural heritage and unspoilt natural beauty. The first cruise ship to call at this untouristed nation, Silver Discoverer will visit three ports including the vast mangrove forests of the sundarbans, home of the Royal Bengal tiger and a UNesCo World Heritage site.

several expeditions feature three days in reclusive Burma, land of rice and rivers, timeless villages and a treasury of world-class monuments; the ancient Burmese capital of Bagan has the largest concentration of Buddhist pagodas in the world. and many voyages also showcase lush sri Lanka with its emerald tea plantations, the Dutch colonial old town of galle, and wildlife-rich yala Park where leopards still roam.

Then there are the islands of the Indian ocean: Madagascar and the seychelles with their rare and endemic wildlife; Reunion and its fiery volcanic highlands; the amazing underwater world of the Maldives; and in the Bay of Bengal — untouched islands in the andamans and Mergui archipelago. Silver Explorer also offers two expeditions that sail along the entire length of africa’s West Coast, the “Unknown Coast”.

The Expedition Experience — Aboard and AshoreDive with manta rays, drift snorkel with whale sharks, hike through old-growth rainforests rich with rare plants and birds. every moment may reveal something wonderful, astonishing — a black parrot in the coco-de-mer forest on Praslin, lemurs in Madagascar, and rare langurs in Mergui. These expeditions sail to some of the last unspoilt tropical islands left in the world, and thanks to our Zodiacs®, we can venture to places where few have gone before. Then after a day ashore, return back on board to all-inclusive luxuries rarely seen in expedition cruising — all-suite accommodations with butler service, world-class cuisine, open bars with fine wines and spirits, and

complimentary WiFi throughout the ship. and with only a hundred or so guests, there’s considerable opportunity to meet and mingle with your guides and fellow travellers. after all, one of the great joys of an expedition voyage is the company you meet — and keep.

Your Expedition Team you’ll have the opportunity to learn from eminent naturalists, geologists, biologists, historians, and ornithologists, all of whom have the education and personal accomplishments to make them ideal companions for your adventure. you can attend daily briefings, lectures, and recaps about your day’s outings. Chat with the anthropologist about the nomadic Moken people. Join the ornithologist on deck to identify rare seabirds. or make your way to the Bridge to visit with the navigational officers. The marine biologist can usually be found here too, searching the seas for whales and dolphins.

The Royal Geographic Society: An Exclusive Partnershipsilversea expeditions and The Royal geographical society, whose patron is The Queen of england, have joined forces to spread knowledge collated from centuries of scientific exploration. Together with The Institute of British geographers, they are providing detailed scientific and historical information to expedition guests.

Founded nearly 200 years ago, the society has supported and honoured some of the world’s most acclaimed explorers and scientists, legendary names like David Livingston, Prince Henry the Navigator, and even the late Jacques-Ives Cousteau who received the society’s prestigious Founder’s Medal for underwater exploration and research. Its archives contain over two million items from maps and photographs to artefacts and books — a vast treasure-trove of information for historians and scientists alike. and now for the guests of silversea.

iSlaNdS of the iNdiaN oceaN aNd weSt afRicaDeep blue seas, pristine reefs and palm-fringed, talcum beaches– all this you will find on the jewel-like island groups of the Indian Ocean. But it’s what sets them apart that ignites the adventurer’s passion — brilliantly beautiful marine creatures of every persuasion and a prolific array of rare and endemic creatures found nowhere else on earth.

EXPEDITION HIGHLIGHTS

• Wander through the narrow streets of stone town in Zanzibar

•Visit the active volcano La fournaise on La reunion • dive the Baa Atoll in the Maldives, a UnescO

Biosphere reserve site•Look for lemurs in Madagascar and other endemic species• explore Vallée de Mai on praslin, the original “Garden

of eden”• search for exotic birds and rare plants with renowned

ornithologists and botanists•encounter the gypsy pygmy people of cameroon•Marvel at the thousands of flamingos in Walvis Bay

Cast adrift from the supercontinents millions of years ago, the islands of the Indian ocean host a unique assemblage of flora and fauna. In the Vallée de Mais on Praslin, the sheer sensuality of the endemic coco-de-mer palms led early explorers to proclaim it the original garden of eden. The aldabra atoll shelters more giant tortoises than in the galápagos, and enjoy a thrilling drift snorkel riding the currents of its vast lagoon. Natural wonders continue in Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world and home to flying foxes and rare lemurs. Two expeditions aboard Silver Explorer wind along the West Coast of africa from Cape Town to Casablanca, visiting the Canary Islands along the way.

A TASTE OF YOUR ITINERARY

Aldabra, Seychelles — Voyages 9627, 9701, 9702Because of its extreme isolation, the world’s second-largest atoll represents one of the last virgin environments, and it will truly be a privilege to visit this World Heritage site. Its profusion of wildlife includes over 4,000 giant land tortoises and the endemic aldabra Rail, the last flightless bird in the Indian ocean. More visible by Zodiac is the ornithological parade of frigate birds and boobies in the mangroves surrounding the lagoon. as the tides pump water in and out of this immense aqueous refuge, massive numbers of eagle rays, turtles and other marine life come and go through the channels to feed and we can enjoy exhilarating drift snorkels, allowing the current to carry us along a magical scene.

Zanzibar, Mozambique — Voyages 9627, 9701The scent of cloves waft through the souk and along the serpentine streets of the old swahili trading port of stone Town. Wander through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings – particularly in the brass-studded, carved teak or mahogany doors. The anglican Church is built over the old slave market, a chilling reminder of a tragic past.

Nosy Mangabe & Masoala National Park, Madagascar — Voyages 9701, 9702Known for its incredible biodiversity and accessible only by water, the Masoala National Park and its offshore island of Nosy Mangabe constitute the largest and one of the least visited protected areas in Madagascar. The rainforest provides sanctuary for ten species of lemurs as well as numerous other endemic species such as the fossa, fanaloka and the very strange and recently rediscovered aye aye. Rare birds can also be spotted including the Red owl and serpent eagle, while Masoala’s three marine sanctuaries protect mangrove ecosystems, coral reefs, dolphins, dugongs and turtles.

Africa’s West Coast — Voyage 7707, 7708These two unique expeditions aboard Silver Explorer offer the rare opportunity to observe the contrasting cultures, tribal customs and natural wonders of nations that still retain the allure of ‘yesterday’s africa’. From the sky-high dunes of Namibia to the grand Marché in Lomé, from the pygmy people of Cameroon to the bird-watching paradise of The gambia, both journeys offer an intriguing kaleidoscope of the life and landscape of an africa that remains largely off the tourist trail.

AFRICA & INDIAN OCEAN

“I determined never to stop until I had come to the end and achieved my purpose.”— Dr. David Livingstone

european exploration of africa’s interior began in earnest in the 18th and 19th centuries. The african association, founded in London in 1788 (later to become part of the newly formed Royal geographical society in 1830) initially concentrated on exploration of West africa before extending to the east in search of the source of the Nile. other geographical feats included the major expeditions undertaken by the extraordinary scottish explorer and missionary Dr David Livingstone, whose

mapping of africa was in part funded by the society. By the late nineteenth century, women had also begun to travel and explore; figures such as Mary Kingsley, whose best-selling book Travels in West Africa (1897), palpably evokes her excitement at undertaking her first journey, shedding light for the first time on africa for the early modern traveller.

THE BAY OF BENGAL AND ANDAMAN SEA

By the 15th century, explorers had long been intrigued by the possibility of finding a sea route around africa to the markets of asia. although attempts were made in ancient times, it was was not until 1488 that such a voyage was successfully achieved by the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias and it was Vasco da gama who first sighted the coast of India in July 1497, having completed the long sought-for sea-route around africa; the culmination of a maritime venture that had lasted for more than a century.

The circumnavigation of africa provided the impetus for the Portuguese (and later spanish, Dutch and British) to establish trading colonies around the Indian ocean and to make overland expeditions into the african Interior, so began the interplay of peoples across this the third largest of the world’s ocean divides.

This movement of people, goods and settlement are documented in the extensive collections of the society, which is synonymous with the 19th century exploration of africa and the Indian sub-continent.

Today, we can provide a remarkable pre-photographic window onto the landscapes of the region through the unique paintings of naval officer Henry Bridges Molesworth, whose delicate watercolours capture the nineteenth century landscape of present-day Bangladesh, whilst some of the earliest mapping of the landscapes of Kolkata, created by the first survey of India in the 1850s is complemented by unique early photographs of the Indian ocean coastlines.

Africa & the Indian OceanThe West Coast of africa is largely unknown to tourists. still raw and innocent. still utterly authentic. or set your sights on the gilded pagodas of Myanmar, the leopards of sri Lanka, and beyond to the jewels of the Indian ocean including the Maldives, and in the seychelles, the garden of eden, itself.

Alaskaa glacier calving with a thunderous roar. a humpback breaching in a spectacular display. grizzlies, Bald eagles, Tufted Puffins and totem poles. Let the timeless sensations of nature renew your spirit on a journey to the Kenai Peninsula and deep inside the Inside Passage.

AsiaCircle the captivating islands of Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Discover Torajaland in sulawesi and dive among the reefs of the Coral Triangle. stroll through magnificent Japanese gardens, explore samurai castles, cruise along underground rivers and come face-to-face with one of the world’s most endangered species: the orangutan.

Australia & New ZealandThe world’s smallest continent is a land of superlatives with amazing wildlife and unrivalled scenery. It’s hard to imagine anything more beautiful than the Kimberley in Western australia. Unless it’s New Zealand’s splendour; her sub-antarctic islands are a pelagic wonderland, and Silver Discoverer is among the few permitted to land in these ‘hotspots’ of biodiversity.

Central America & CaribbeanLet your thoughts drift to balmy breezes and swaying palms. Hike through tropical rain forests, visit jungle villages, and cruise by Zodiac to a deserted Island. set sail for some of the most enchanting destinations in the americas. In the most alluring way imaginable.

Galápagos snorkel with penguins, dive with sea lions, hike along lava tunnels and back to the beginning of time. Behold giant tortoises, Blue-Footed Boobies and iguanas basking in the sun. experience the “enchanted Isles” from the all-suite comfort of Silver Galapagos.

Micronesia, Polynesia and Melanesia separated by vast expanses, the islands of oceania range from the impenetrable mountains of Papua New guinea to the edens of French Polynesia. These far-flung archipelagos support an incredible diversity of cultures with an intriguing repository of ancestral traditions ... and enough untouched natural beauty to last a lifetime.

Northern Europe and the British Isles From atlantic Islands and Iberian shores to France’s wine country and the picturesque charm and historic riches of Ireland and Britain, these intriguing expeditions reveal new dimensions of even familiar nations.

Russian Far East Long closed to the Western World, the sea of okhotsk is home to some of the world’s least travelled destinations. In the Kuril Islands, the seabird population can only be described as spectacular. The world’s largest bear roams the Kamchatka Peninsula, while the Bering sea supports virtually every form of arctic life. For nature lovers, welcome to nirvana.

South America experience the diversity of south america from the lush Darien Jungle to Chilean lakes and glaciated fjords. admire the pre-Columbian ruins and desertscapes of the atacama. Ride a Zodiac around icebergs and calving glaciers. Behold penguins, condors, sea lions — a fantastic array of seabirds and marine life as we journey south.
