COMMUNITY PLAN BACKGROUND The first Community Planning Meeting was held on the 21st of July, 2003. A notice was put in the Community News and a letter was sent out to all community organisations inviting them to come along. John Brooke and Craig Niemann, from the Loddon Shire, attended to help with the process. From this meeting a Steering Committee was formed to put the community’s ideas into a written document that categorised and looked at the long and short term things that needed to be done in Calivil. Another Community meeting was held on the 26th of November 2003, with an Architect to discuss ideas for making the hall, toilets and footy sheds a more workable and pleasant place for our community to come together in. A Steering Committee then met to prepare the Community Plan draft, so that it could be presented to the community for their final approval. A Community meeting was then organised for the 16th of June 2004 at the Calivil Hall, where the community gave the Plan their approval and it was presented to the Loddon Shire and East Loddon Historical Society on the 19th of July 2004. The Community Plan was titled “The Calivil Community’s vision for the next generation and beyond”. Since the Steering Committee developed the plan, they then merged with the Calivil Recreation Reserve Committee of Management in 2005, which now overseas the implementation of the Community plan’s goals. This merge was prompted by the need to have representatives from each of Calivil’s Clubs and Organisations involved with the Community Plan, which was the structure existing at that time in the Calivil Recreation Reserve Committee of Management. The Calivil Community reviews the Community Plan annually to ensure that achievements are recognised, goals are still relevant, and to ensure any additions the community wishes to make are added. Refer to the Appendix (page 5) to view the organisations involved in the consultative process.

OVERVIEW OF THE CALIVIL COMMUNITY
Calivil is a small community in the Loddon Shire. It has a population of approximately 200 residents and is situated 70 kilometres north of Bendigo and 70 kilometres west of Echuca. It is one of the Shire’s principal irrigation areas. It consists of mainly dairy farms, but also has a diverse range of other farming, including; cattle, prime lambs, and pigs. This very small community was settled in 1872. It was then heavily timbered with grey and yellow box gums with dense undergrowth of golden and cat tail wattles and abounded with kangaroos. Calivil has always been a place with a strong sense of community, which is demonstrated by the buildings, recreation area and the community groups that work hard to keep them maintained and functioning. Calivil currently has a well equipped hall that was built in 1960. The original hall was built in 1909. The St Marks Anglican Church was erected in 1937, then in 1953 the Methodist Church as built. It is today the Calivil Uniting Church. The Calivil community also had two schools which both opened in 1878, a Post Office that opened in 1879, and a shop which opened in 1963. Today community and sporting organisations play a big role in the Calivil Community and still do, with football, netball, golf, tennis, cricket and bowls all active in this area. Other community groups consist of the Senior Citizens, Church and Guilds, CWA, Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Hall Committee, Housing Committee and
Cemetery Trust.
The Recreation Reserve is cared for and maintained by a caretaker who is supported by community members. The Calivil Community has a great sense of pride in its people and environment.

THE Calivil COMMUNITY REAPS THE rewards OF DEVELOPING A
Community Plan
The Calivil Community has always been strong spirited and alive. In the 1960s
community members built many of the fabulous facilities we see on the Calivil
Recreation Reserve today (which were regarded as “state of the art” for their time).
We have also seen over the years Calivil dominate in all sporting areas, which has
been particularly demonstrated in recent times with the repeated success of the
Calivil United Football & Netball Club.
A very central component of the Community today, has been the development of the
Calivil Community Plan, which was an initiative driven by the Loddon Shire with the
assistance of local community member Sue Lea. The first Community Planning
Meeting was held in 2005, and since then has been a driving force in the Community,
and has harnessed the drive and energy of the local community spirit.
The Community Plan has really brought the Community together, where all local
members of the community are asked to contribute ideas on how they can continually
improve Calivil, so that it remains to be a great place to work, live and raise a family.
The Calivil Community Plan is implemented and overseen by the Calivil Recreation
Reserve Committee, and has seen some great results since its very first project, which
was erecting the great new playground near the tennis courts – which is thoroughly
enjoyed by our children.
There has since been the modern upgrades in the supper room (which adjoins to the
Hall), with new furniture, glass door entry, fresh paint, new carpet and fabulous new
Split Systems. The footy club has also developed this area by building on a bar
extension, and upgrading all the sporting memorabilia. This has now made this area
fantastic for special functions, training nights, meetings and other social activities.
Another successful project has been the erection of barrages in front of the Footy
Rooms and developing the track around the west side of the oval, to divert traffic
around the oval, and make a safe area for families and children on Football & Cricket
days. This has been highly successful, and has changed the whole social dynamics of
this area on sports days.
There have been many other achievements made through the Community Plan,
including the purchasing of equipment such as a new oven, new fridges and vacuum
cleaner. A great new Machinery Shed has also been built recently at the back of the
Reserve to store equipment and machinery securely.
While the Community has achieved a lot since the Community Plan has begun, it still
has great many plans for the future. It is currently in the process of refurbishing the
interior of the Main Hall, and will continue to make improvements in the future to
make it also a great modern venue for functions. Additionally, the number one
priority on the Community Plan is to build an extension onto the back of the Football
Rooms with new toilets for the public, new showers and change rooms for the
netballers, and a family / disabled toilet. The Recreation Reserve Committee are

The newly refurbished supper room makes a fantastic venue for functions
BEFORE: The old playground
The new playground being constructed by local community members
currently awaiting news of an application, which has been submitted to apply for funding with Sports and Recreation
Victoria, before we can proceed with this project.
All of the achievements the Calivil Community has made have been with the continual support of the Loddon Shire, as
well as through the funding from numerous grants, which have been sought through philanthropic and government
organisations.
Calivil is extremely positive about its future, and will continue to battle on through the tough times. It has a strong focus
on engaging and supporting their youth, through the modification and improvement of the facilities. Calivil is also a
very proud community, and recognises the work of others before them, who have made the Recreation Reserve the
great community facility it is today.
So next time you drive past Calivil, stop and take breather, have a look around at all the great changes that have been
made, and please take the time to enjoy our great little Community Hub.

Other community groups consist of the Senior Citizens, Church and Guilds, CWA, Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, Hall Committee, Housing Committee and Cemetery Trust.
The Recreation Reserve is cared for and maintained by a caretaker who is supported by community members. The Calivil Community has a great sense of pride in its people and environment.
