Welcome to the April - May edition of
The Calderdale Voice.
For this issue of the magazine we have
a lot of exciting news from the
Healthwatch Calderdale team including
the date of our ‘Your Life, Your Choice’
event that we are running in
partnership with local organisation Lead
the Way. More details on that can be
found on page 2.
We also have some national awareness
campaigns that are happening over April
or May like National Walking Month.
This campaign is all about getting out
walking as much as you can this May
and, as our cover photo suggests, it’s
just at the right time to see the
bluebells!

For most of us, keeping a healthy mouth
means two things, regular brushing and
visiting our dentist. But there are a range of
other issues that relate to enjoying good oral
health, from seeing a dentist regularly to
getting care from hospital dentists.
Having good oral health helps you stay
healthy generally. Problems with our mouth
can result in pain, infection, tooth loss, time
off school and work and even effects the way
we feel about ourselves and stops us enjoying
activities with our friends and family.
The Yorkshire and The Humber Public Health
England Centre Dental Public Health Team
have completed a piece of work which looks
at what the key issues and challenges in
improving oral health are. They are keen to
understand whether you think it’s correct
and if not what’s missing.
This is a really good opportunity to tell the
people who are responsible for NHS dental
services and community programmes what
things are really like, and to help change
them for the better.

survey, please visit

Healthwatch Calderdale has recently
launched a new radio advertisement
campaign that will be played at every
Calderdale Council gym facility.
The 20 second advert will be played
every hour at the 6 gym facilities based
across Calderdale to introduce
Healthwatch Calderdale, the work we do
and how to get involved.
Emma Worsley, our Communications
Worker said
“This is a fantastic opportunity to
broaden awareness of Healthwatch
Calderdale. Everyone has had experience
of local Health & Social Care services at
some point in their lives. This new
radio ad campaign will help us reach an
even wider audience and give them the
chance to have a say about their local
services.”
In September 2014, Healthwatch Calderdale
staff and volunteers spent a week at
Calderdale Royal Hospital conducting
face-to-face surveys with people using the
hospital car parks. The survey was sparked
by a number of concerns raised with us
around the difficulties in parking on the
hospital site. Over 600 people were
surveyed and the results have now been
published in a report that is available to
download on our website.
In response to the report’s findings, the
Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation
Trust has put in place a number of plans to
improve car parking at the site, including
Working with the highways agency who
are assisting the hospital in remodelling
some of the car park layouts
A review of the FULL/Spaces signage to
ensure it gives an accurate reading
Better signage on car parking charges

A smile. It’s one of the most powerful and
emotive gestures we can do. Smiling shows
confidence and has been proved to have a
positive effect on relationships, careers and
overall image.
Oral health charity the British Dental Health
Foundation is delighted to announce the
return of National Smile Month for 2015.
The UK’s largest oral health campaign is set
to take place between 18 May and 18 June,
and aims to make a significant impact
improving oral health at grassroots level and
educating on the importance of oral hygiene.
In its simplest form, National Smile
Month promotes three key messages at the
heart of good oral health; brush your teeth
last thing at night and at least one other
time during the day with a fluoride
toothpaste, cut down on how often you eat
sugary foods and drinks, and visit the dentist
regularly, as often as they recommend.

whole lot friendlier. Will you 'up your

Holding open a door or a little patience in

Parkinson’s is a degenerative neurological

their bodies, for which there currently is
no cure. The main symptoms of the

Mental Health Awareness Week 2015 will
take place from 11-17 May on the topic of
Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is paying attention to the present
moment, without getting stuck in the past or
worrying about the future.
If you haven’t heard of mindfulness, you may
be surprised to find out that you have
probably been mindful at some point in your
life.
When you’re going for a walk, breathing and
enjoying the fresh air or maybe painting and
find out hours have passed…when you’re so
absorbed in an activity you pay it full
attention, that’s being mindful.
At the heart of it, Mindfulness is a mind-body
based training that helps people observe the
way they think and feel about their
experiences, whether good or bad. This can
really change the way you manage and react
to stressful situations, giving you a valuable
tool to stay mentally healthy.

The earliest known use of the term
‘spring-cleaning’ was in 1857
At one time, spring cleaning was a much
needed chore after a long, cold Winter of
coal, oil and wood burning. These heat sources would leave homes dusty,
dirty and covered with soot and ash.
Nowadays, a thorough spring clean is the perfect way to shake off the months
of cold, dark Winter and declutter your homes in preparation for the return
of Spring.
A survey into UK household cleaning conducted by promotionalcodes.org.uk
has also revealed the calorie burning benefits of applying some elbow grease
into your housework. The findings revealed that:
Vacuuming for 1 hour burns approx 238 calories
Dusting for 2 hours burns approx 340 calories
Scrubbing the floor for 1 hour burns approx 258 calories
Climbing up and down from the loft for 20 minutes burns approx 181 calories
Turning mattresses and making beds for 1 hour burns approx 136 calories
Moving heavy furniture for 2 hours burns approx 476 calories
Cleaning external doors for 1 hour burns approx 204 calories
Deep cleaning bathrooms for 1 hour burns approx 258 calories
