THE FAULT IN OUR WARS

Wars are ongoing everywhere in the world. Even in

our own home turf, there are battles being fought each day. Some not as grave as the ones we see in the Middle East nowadays but it is still a matter of survival. The people we see and meet on the streets have so many struggles to overcome, some emerge victorious the others are still fighting for dear lives.

Take a look around. Do you know what goes on behind the façade of the people you meet? Do you know their story?

Last weekend, I had a good conversation with a wonderful young married couple and we had a long discussion on the many challenges all of us face and how we deal with them differently.

Our chat delved into how we often misjudge people and shutting them down by not giving them the chance to reveal their entire and true self.

This is how conflict starts. When we put our own defenses and not allowing others the time to open up to us, there will be possible tension and misunderstanding.

Most times we wage war without thinking of the consequences, barging into a heated situation without trying to analyze the pros and cons of our actions.

Wars need not be as catastrophic as the ones bombarding our television sets, the little conflicts we encounter on our own battlefield are as destructive as well. If we allow ourselves to be constantly consumed by hate, greed, anger and egocentricity then you have lost without even trying.

Life, whether the ones we have or the ones others are having should always be given respect.

There are so many lives wasted because we choose to not to even bother nor care.

If we all just try to give more space for others to come into our lives, I don't think wars of any kind will ever cause us or others pain.

How about starting it right now? When you are done reading this, try to smile a little, ease up on yourselves and give someone a reason to smile as well.

Have a great week ahead!

WORDS AND NOTESDEBBIE CABAGUE

CRUCIBLE: IMAGE VS. CHARACTER

Wintley Phipps said,” It is in the quiet crucible of our personal

private sufferings that our noblest dreams are born and our God’s greatest gifts are given.” Crucibles can be a vessel used for melting a substance that requires a high degree of heat, a severe test, a place or a situation in which concentrated forces to interact to cause change or development.

Seven years ago I never realized that what I have been going through at that time was a crucible.

Giving up my Nursing studies when I was almost done and hitting the restart button were never easy.

It was painful and yet it became an open door to my dreams and self discovery.

It was a process of letting go, acceptance, forgiving myself and moving on.

Here I am today doing the things I never expected I would be doing from that time.

Now I can see how God has been realigning me from that point and perhaps understand why that Crucible had to happen.

When all the while I thought it happened to hurt me but it was the other way around because God meant it for good.

In the book of 1 Samuel God asked Samuel to search for a king 1 Samuel 16:6-7 6 When they arrived, Samuel took one

look at Eliab and thought, “Here he is! God’s anointed!” 7 But God told Samuel, “Looks aren’t everything. Don’t be impressed with his looks and stature. I’ve already eliminated him. God judges a person differently than humans do. Men and women look at the face; God looks into the heart.” Samuel almost chose the wrong king because he was focused on the wrong qualities. God warned Samuel not to consider the person’s appearance but his heart. Even today people value image but God values character.

1 Corinthians 1:26-29 says 26 Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy[a] when God called you. 27 Instead, God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose things that are powerless to shame those who are powerful. 28 God chose things despised by the world,[b] things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important. 29 As a result, no one can ever boast in the presence of God. God often chooses to qualify the called rather than call the qualified. Psalms 78:70-72 He chose his servant David, calling him from the sheep pens. 71 He took David from tending the

ewes and lambs and made him the shepherd of Jacob’s descendants— God’s own people, Israel.72 He cared for them with a true heart and led them with skillful hands. More than anything else, David was a shepherd who led God’s people with a heart of integrity and hands of skill.

Yes God meant it for good because he was concerned of my character, humility to restart, patience to learn new things and persevere in the realignment that He has given me. Today I am His work at progress both character and skills. Whenever I am faced with such crucible no matter how hard and ugly it is I will always have the end in mind that God will mean it for good.

As James says it ( James 1:2-5) ... 2 Count it all joy, my brothers,[a] when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

God has chosen trials to develop our character. We can either choose whether to resist or embrace God’s process.

I choose to embrace. Will you?

HAVE MY SAYKLAUS DORING

IS THAT SO? DIAY BA?

And they lived happily ever after ...

In a very old issue of "Philadelphia News", columnist Larry Fields confessed: "I lead a life of wine, women and song (by the way, this is a wonderful waltz composed by Johann Strauss and mostly requested in my radio program!) - it's cheaper than petrol, food and rent!" Mmmh - is that so? Diay ba?

Some marriages are made in heaven. You know some? Me too! The best of the rest are down-to-earth! Maybe also yours! Down-to-earth! Okay?

Maybe you remember this: "Then the prince swept the lovely young maiden into his arms and carried her home to his castle. And they lived happily ever after." Indeed, they did. "The happiest marriage I can picture or imagine would be the union of a deaf man and a blind woman!" That's not from me, that's a quotation from the British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 - 1834). I must confess - strong tobacco!

What I would like to see is an autonomous home affairs study of all these title of nobility bearers seven years after their happily-ever-after marriages.

Or even earlier, because the so-called darned and tricky seventh marriage year could be even the first or second or third one.

The truth is, that life isn't made up of the continual highs found in the initial stages of courtship. Of course, flirting is fu and a wide groove existing.

But after a while, our system needs a rest. Unanimously, we're in the second stage sooner or later, and maybe our marriage life badly needs a new outside coating. "Happiness in marriage is entirely a matter of chance", already stressed the British novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817) - by the way, one of my favorite writers.

All of the sudden the partner wants you day and

night, prefers watching the cable sports channels, falls asleep while you're revealing your innermost secrets and even forgets the anniversary of the first time ever he or she saw your face.

Just bear in mind: you've won each other's acceptance, and sometimes, even feeling terrible and gloomy, this acceptance shouldn't be undervalued.

At times we see a house or apartment to be cleaned, many other things have to be organized, and the partner looks as fatigued and bored as you feel yourself. Logical question: That's it? What was it?

And suddenly we experienced the third stage and learned, why it's worth the ups and downs. Maybe we men don't mention anymore, how incredible she looks, but we enjoy bleating and grousing at her while spending innumerable hours putting herself together. But then suddenly, we men are able to unload the garbage without being asked... .

Maybe she doesn't have the newspaper and the slippers waiting for him. Is he really so fragile? But, she asks about his day and is really interested in his responses.

Although no marriage is continually blissful, it can be pretty good most of the time.

When we last through arguments, money worries and kid's problems or slowly but surely going through mid-life crises, we should face reality that our relationship needs ups and downs.

It's because the fundamental reason for a marriage has outlasted the craziness of day-today living: we love each other.

That's my idea of happily ever after indeed! And, "writing is like getting married. One should never commit oneself until one is amazed at one's luck", as Irish-born British novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch (1919-1999) stressed in "The Black Prince" Bradley's Pearson's foreword.

Just want to share my thoughts and understanding about FIESTA - when I was a kid the word Fi-

esta means food and celebration, I get to taste diff types of authentic local delicacy most especially my favorite....LETCHON.

Now, my thinking about Fiesta still the same but this time with social responsibility.

How? by promoting Higalaay Festival to attract Investors and Tour-ist. Now is the best time to showcase the beauty of CDO, It creates a healthy economic activity, example: A tourist arrives and will spend fuel if traveling by car, then the gas station earns profit to produce salaries to workers, same dynamics if they use public vehicles. We are just talking about fuel, how about food, place to stay, what if they fall in love with the place and migrate? Or put up their own business? Will there be more job opportunities?

One way or another everyone pays taxes to the City, then the government uses the money for projects to cater different marginal sectors and beautifi-cation /tourism related to attract again other people.

How ironic why the budget are not given, Now the big challenge is, because of political issues/interest the budget is not enough. It's either I watch or I do something.

Today with social media it made my contribution easier by just promoting Higalaay, like or sharing post. It's do-able and even kids nowadays can do it.

It is the birth of the new name Higalaay which means friendship. Having the trademark plus our unique attractions such as the rafting, ziplines, food, history sites and the strategic location of Cdo branded as the gateway to Mindanao with International Air-port and Seaport will really create that BOOOOM!!!!!

Imagine, if you want to hit the beach it's everywhere and the nearby Camiguin, on the other hand our neighbor Bukidnon is just minutes away for cold breeze ambiance.

Wait how can that help CDO if we promote our neighbors? Of course they have to pass CDO first which means they will spend and support our local business.

To summarize, everything is with us, all we need is the support of everyone, just few post and share will make a big difference. What if everyone in CDO changes their profile picture to Higalaay for 2 weeks, do you think it will create an impact? I think no amount of budget can match that...,I know its very ambi-tious but having you do it is a start. who knows? Hehe

What are your thoughts about Fi-esta?

Eid al-Fitr (رطفلا ديع) or the "festival of breaking of the fast", is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims all over the world that marks the end of Ramadan, which is the Islamic holy month of fasting (sawm).

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting (and including drinking of water) during the entire month of Ramadan, a day when Muslims around the world show a common goal of unity.

Eid al-Fitr is generally celebrated on the same day as Saudi Arabia.

Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr is the day (beginning at sunset) of the first

sighting of the crescent moon shortly after sunset.

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated about three days. Common greetings during this holiday are the Arabic greeting ‘Eid Mubārak ("Blessed Eid") or ‘Eid Sa‘īd ("Happy Eid").

In addition, many countries have their own greetings in the local language – in Turkey, for example, a typical saying might be Bayramınız kutlu olsun or "May your Bayram – Eid – be blessed". Muslims are also encouraged on this day to forgive and forget any differences with others or animosities that may have occurred during the year.

The Festival of Creation

Dr. Derindag says that “there are two major festivals of the Muslims, one of them is Eid al-Adha, that is the festival that we have when the pilgrimage went to Saudi Arabia to visit Mecca and Medina. It is the remembrance of Abraham, where the Muslims throughout the world slaughter certain animals and distribute the meat to the poor people. The second one is the Eid al-Fitr – the end of Ramadan”.

“During Ramadan, for 30 days, Muslims are fasting, we have our quick breakfast at around 3 to 4 in the morning before sunrise, we do not have anything until 6pm, which means in 24 hours we have dinner, for 30 days we don’t have proper breakfast or lunch, we wake up with a prayer – then at 5 am we go to the Mosque” Dr. Derindag continues.

Dr. Mehmet R. Derindag also notes the beautiful tradition that the Muslims have in Mindanao and the Philippines during Ramadan; “it is a very beautiful tradition that the Muslims in Mindanao have – they gather either in the stadiums or in a big conference halls, we have long prayer, a sermon, then after 30 days, we will have our first breakfast

with family members, in other countries this is also the time to visit the graveyards and pay respects to the departed and also a time to visit friends and family where they prepare special dishes during the Eid days, like in Turkey the prepare Baklava”.

Baklava is a rich, sweet pastry made of layers of filo filled with chopped nuts and sweetened and held together with syrup or honey.

“Here, I have seen Muslim Maranaos prepare deserts made from rice”, Dr. Derindag continued.

This year, President Benigno Aquino III declares July 29, Tuesday, a nationwide regular holiday in observance of Eid’l Fitr, or the end of Ramadhan. The President made the announcement through Proclamation No. 826.

FITR or FITRA “Fitr or Fitra, in Arabic, means ‘creation’ or ‘nature’ – so we call this the Festival of Creation. We have millions of things that we have to be thankful for to Almighty God, but most of the time we take those for granted – one of them is, us being created. Like me for example; I’m now 34 years old - where was I 34 years ago?, I was nothing. Then I came to existence - that existence itself needs a great thankfulness and gratitude to the Almighty God – we came to existence because of Him”

A Celebration and Gift of Life and Nature“We believe that these 30 days of fasting is a form of purification, closeness to Almighty God, somehow we believe that we have been forgiven. There are 3 gifts that we believe we are going to receive in Ramadan; the mercy of God, the forgiveness of God, and the emancipation from hellfire”.

A Simple Message“In this Ramadan, we have been hearing about war, killings, bombings, mischief, and bloodshed, innocent people are being massacred in many parts of the world. May this feast of creation (or nature) somehow bring peace to the Islamic world and to the entire world, which is what is expected from humanity, not only from Muslims, but from every human being. I hope that there will be days we can celebrate hand-in-hand with Christians and other religions”.

Dance Off contest, the largest interschool dance competition in the country.

Hundreds joined the dance parties put together by Smart Prepaid at the Black Market in Makati City, Barcode in Cebu City and Acropolis Superclub in Davao City, which featured adrenaline-charged numbers by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines’ Power Impact Dancers, University of Cebu Main Dance Troupe and street dancers from the University of South Eastern Philippines, respectively.

The crews’ heart-stopping routines, followed by breathtaking dance showdowns, gave everyone a preview of the upcoming competition, which offers over P4 million worth of prizes to the nation’s best dance groups in the elementary, high school and college levels.

The event also gave everyone a chance to move to the latest party beats whipped up by MC Paolo and DJ Ace Ramos in Makati, MC Benson in Cebu and MC Wacky and Brylle Aguirre in Davao.

“Smart Prepaid has always been a big ally of the youth in pursuing their passions. With

this year’s Jump In Dance-Off competition, we hope to give talented movers a bigger stage to show their dancing chops to the world,” said Joel Lumanlan, Smart Prepaid head.

“We want them all to realize that their dreams are within reach if they only jump in to opportunities around them,” Lumanlan added.

For IT graduate Lord Angelo R. Ladimo, head of the PUP Power Impact Dancers who made it to the finals last year, the competition offers an experience like no other.

“We all gained so much from our Jump In Dance-Off because it exposed us to different levels of talents and skills from our counterparts around the country. We learned from them and also felt a sense of fulfillment to in being counted among the most talented bunch of young dancers, ” said Ladimo.

“We also got the chance to be coached by our dancing idols from All-Stars, and had the rare opportunity to perform at the Smart Araneta stage. I sure hope that our group go back on the same stage this year with a bang,” he added.

Smart Prepaid has opened the initial phase of the competition through online auditions that will run until August 12, 2014.

To join the online auditions, each dance

group must have 12 to 16 members from the same elementary, high school or college – all subscribers of Smart Jump In SIM or regular Smart Prepaid. The members of the group may be all males, all females or a mix of males and females, with ages from 10 to 24 years old.

Interested groups must make a video with all the members showing their best moves to their choice of music and submit it online via the official contest site www.smart.com.ph/danceoff.

Dance groups will be judged based on their visual and artistic expression; technical execution; and musicality and overall effectiveness.

Those who will pass the online auditions will be invited to the live regional screenings in the different spots of the country in August and September. The top teams will battle it out in the grand finals at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on October 5.
